528 pages of great songs under one cover for under 20 bucks. But easy? Depends on how you define that.
I love this collection. It has so many songs in it that I like to play that aren't in any of my other songbooks. I love that even though it's big and fat and NOT spiral bound, its pages nonetheless lie flat wherever I open them to; that its sturdy cover and its binding hold up under frequent use, that they didn't skimp on the quality of the paper and printing. And that you can get it here for under twenty bucks. But what exactly, you may wonder, does Hal Leonard mean by "easy" piano? Well, I'd say it means that if you can read and play standard sheet music, you can probably play anything here. Which I guess I'd put at around Grade 3 competence level and beyond. It's really too, too bad the seller isn't offering one of Amazon's "inside looks" here like they did on the Amazon product page for an earlier version of this book, so you could check out the contents list and see what you'd be getting. Maybe I can help a little with that. I'm not going to rattle...

Great music, but.....
For any that have not seen this movie nor heard the music, you are missing one of the greatest of all time. This is a must see movie, and once you see it, you will want the music. This CD however, is the same as the Amelie soundtrack with the green cover, that costs about 30 dollars less! The only difference of this cd is the cover, which was marketed for japan. Do not waste money on this cd, get the soundtrack with the green cover.

Love, Dreams, and Amelie
This is my first review. All my senses are telling me not to write anything; but, I must say something about this work of song. My best friend came to visit me from home during Thanksgiving. He wanted to watch Amelie in the old theater we have because he knew it would take such a long time to get to Puerto Rico. I went in because I love movies and I was also intrigued by what I had seen of it. My heart was ambushed. The story played before me and love filled my soul. The music was a warm, slow, and gentle stream flowing through me, threatening to spill through my fingertips. Comtine D'un Autre Ete: L'apres Midi, the first of Amelie's masterpieces. Once this song was played, I was hooked, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, along with Yann Tiersen, had my full attention. Though without a doubt, the director of Amelie did a spectacular job of movie making, without the music of Yann Tiersen, it would never have been as powerful. When La Valse D'Amelie played, I felt like...

Amelie: Original Soundtrack Recording Top to learn more

This sunny comic fable from idiosyncratic director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (City of Lost Children, Alien Resurrection, Delicatessen) boasts any number of intimate charms, not the least of which is Yann Tiersen's warmly inviting score. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Tiersen's work and training may have masterfully encompassed classical, pop, and rock, but his delightful Amélie music proves he is slave to none. In this, his fourth soundtrack, Tiersen displays an impressive command of idiom and melodic subtlety that's rightfully drawn comparisons to the great Nino Rota. With a Paris-set story driven by blossoming love, the composer frequently leans on the familiar Parisian street accordion motif as a starting point. If that sounds clichéd, it's anything but; Tiersen's delicate touch incorporates Gypsy flourishes, classical string ensembles, electronics, stark and lovely solo piano, and even minimalist technique--often in the same charming cue. The result is music that manages to sound variously breezy, fresh, and contemporary, yet somehow comfortably familiar. Amélie is a warm, postmodernist score that never forgets where its heart lies. --Jerry McCulley Top to learn more

Best soundtrack of 2001
Every year there ends up being one or two original movie scores that really blow me away. In 1999, the soundtrack to the musical South Park movie was the bomb, and there was also Thomas Newman's American Beauty score. In 2000 there was the dark and ambient Virgin Suicides score by Air and the horrifying Requiem For a Dream music by Clint Mansell. For 2001, Yann Tiersen's Amelie score takes the cake. The movie, if you don't know, is about a quirky girl who lives in Paris. She cultivates a fine taste for the smaller pleasues in life. She comes across a box in her apartment left by a boy 40 years ago, sets out to return it to him, and then discovers that it's her life's calling to brighten people's days. The score is somewhere between Nino Rota's Amarcord and The Godfather music. The mood is fun, tinged with sadness. It's like carnival music with a Fellini funeral procession, and a touch of sheer magic thrown in for good measure.I was surprised to find out that not all of this music...

programmable music boxes
These music boxes are awfully neat. I set them up on a 3" x 3" square of wood about 1/2" thick. This allows them to resonate. The hard part is finding the little metric machine screws to affix them to the wood block [or anything else]. They come with little screws that are pretty useless with a resonator. But hey once set up you can make your own tunes and program them. They work as a paper-tape reader that translates the notes you punch [punch included] into notes of music. I used 100 lb paper from Staples/Office Depot and very easily made my own music sequences. For $15 they are quite the deal. Just remember you must screw them down to some surface (wood is great) that will allow them to resonate properly. Great for kids probably about 8 yrs or older. You can see most of the mechanical behavior (gears, etc).

Wonderful toy for the musically-inclined
I spent hours last night playing with this little guy. I can understand the frustration some reviewers have expressed with this being a little difficult to work. Its a toy that requires a lot of patience but the payoff is immense. Don't get this unless you're intrigued by the ability to create your own tunes. True, you can transcribe other music onto the paper, but it will be time consuming and not nearly as fun (for me anyway). Its great for a lazy sunday afternoon with nothing to do but fool around on it, making a pretty little tune. The tone is great when played against a nice wood. My only suggestion is to be sure to get extra paper, because it takes a few tries to get things just right, and you can't just 'undo'.

Incredibly Beautiful, Peaceful, Piano Piece
Don't let the picture on the album influence you. This piece of music, Comptine D'un Autre Été, L'après-Midi, from () is an incredibly beautiful, peaceful, somewhat mesmerizing solo piano work of art. I wish this piece was longer (it's 2:20 minutes) - I could listen to it for a long time (sometimes I loop it). You can find a live performance version and this one is in a studio (no audience distraction at the front or back of it). I also found sheet music for piano for it on the web and I have that too.Note (caution?): the CD and DVD versions of the album that this is on have a number of pieces of music from "Amelie From Montmartre" and many people say the other pieces of music are wonderful too. However, those other pieces are not my type of music so finding this gem (Comptine D'un Autre...

A song for all moods!
I was introduced to this song over Thanksgiving break when my brother-in-law played it on the piano for my young daughters. They enjoyed watching him play it, and I enjoyed hearing it. I enjoyed it enough that I purchased it the same day (I only bought the one piece not the whole album, so that it all I can speak to)! It fits into a music category of mine that includes songs I play when I'm feeling down *and* songs I play when I'm happy. In some ways it reminds me of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's 'Feel it Now'. They are, of course, very different songs, but it gives me the same 'feeling' when I listen to it.'Comptine d'un autre été, l'après-midi' is a wonderful, though brief, piano piece that has an almost hauntingly beautiful quality to it. In particular, I like the pacing of the song, it never feels too slow or too fast and builds to a final 'crescendo' in a very satisfying way, and finally, it is quite 'catchy' (not necessarily like a pop song,...

Brings Amelie to life
Breton composer Yann Tiersen's haunting, poignant score to the French film "Le fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain" is full of childhood nostalgia such as toy piano and typewriter tempered with more melancholy piano musings worthy of Chopin or Satie. In "Six Pieces pour Piano," six of Amelie's most memorable themes are included, including Le Moulin (The Windmill), La Dispute (The Argument), Sur le fil (On the Wire), La Valse d'Amelie (Amelie's Waltz), and two of Tiersen's Comptine d'ete. The sheet music is very close in spirit to the original OST, and I would venture a guess that the level would be around high intermediate. Many of the pieces I learned quickly and use as a way to unwind at the end of a day; some are perfectly suited to slow, rainy days, such as the raindrop-like melody of Le Moulin. Others, such as Amelie's Waltz, are infectiously (and romantically) good-natured. This is a French folio (I tracked down my copy while visiting Paris in 2002), so it is pricey, but well worth...
