A Great Addition to the Series
I have heard many bad things about this one, but as an avid fan of Asterix and other works of Uderzo (Iznogud, Umpah Pah, ...), I think this is a great story. The art work is superb, Uderzo certainly gets better with each story. The plot is funny, and Spartakis is great! I have some problems with it though, the adventure seems too much for 48 pages. Seems like at times, Uderzo has had to leave the adventure without getting it anywhere. Spartakis and his band could have been given a greater role than just the cab ride from the Armorian Coast to Atlantis!

A brilliant if flawed new edition of the Asterix series
The appeal of the Asterix books is universal, and timeless. For children there are terrific stories well told, and dazzling illustrations. For adults - the real audience - there are Rene Goscinny's wonderful jokes and marvellous puns, interspersed with quotations from classical authors, The Bible, Napoleon, Shakespeare and many many more. And Albert Uderzo's illustrations are often simply breathtaking. So, many of the visual ideas in 'Asterix and Cleopatra' come from the movie 'Cleopatra' with Elizabeth Taylor and Rex Harrison. In 'Asterix the Legionary' the pirates' ship is sunk by Asterix and Obelix (again). The image of the pirates on a raft in mid ocean is derived from a 19th Century French Romantic painting, now in the Louvre, 'The Raft of the Medusa' by Gericault. In the French version the pirate captain says to the reader 'Je suis meduse' ('I'm stunned'). In English this is rendered equally cleverly as 'We've been framed, by Jericho.'Ah, the translations. Asterix...

The beginning of a great legend...
This is the premier of the world-renowned Asterix series - one of the most humorous, most colorful series of comics that made and continues to make millions of children and adults smile. In this tale the reader is introduced to Asterix, his friends and their strange, yet lovable little village. The reader gets to meet the revered druid, aptly named "Getafix" and the bustling, burly chieftain, "Vitalstatistix." The story gives a lot of background to the entire comic series, including the nature of the magic potion and the reason why Obelix isn't allowed to touch it. The reader also learns about the Roman dilemma, which revolves around the little, indomitable Gaulish village. This specific episode begins with the Romans sending a spy in to the village to discover their secret source of strength. Very soon, the Romans kidnap Getafix in the hopes that they could cajole the potion's formula out of him. However, the Romans are lined up to pay dearly because...

A Little Bit of Fun
Someplace growing up I ran into the Asterix titles, with a four volume set beginning with Asterix the Gaul. As a child I enjoyed the antics; as an adult I enjoy the puns and historical allusions. It continually amazes me to realize that this is originally a French production, and yet translated into English and some 20 other languages, and the puns *still* translate! That's not easy to do. And while later episodes decline in quality and are suitable more for children, stories like Asterix the Gaul are great for children of 30 years too.The very names provide example of brilliant use of dialogue. Asterix- a small, seeming addition. Obelisk, who delivers menhirs. Getafix, the Druid. (Remember, this series began in the 60's.) Cacaphonix, the Bard, and Vitalstatistix, the chief. In the same vein, the authors use contemporary differences between cultures and play them upon the ancient Gaulish-Roman dispute. This is about the only place one can find swearing in Latin- "ipso facto",...

A tribute to Asterix fans
If you are an Asterix fan, you should get this book; almost all the characters from the entire series come together, and it is just like a review of everything you have found in all previous Asterix books. The story may be a little weak, but this book was not drawn for the story. I think it is a great tribute to 50 years of Asterix. I agree that humor is a little subtle in this book, and that, in my opinion makes it even better. If you are not an Asterix fan you can go for another title; however, if you are, you will love this book.

I bid you adieu.... by Uderzo
This is definitely not a book meant for starter Asterix fans - this is more like a finale book! Once you read this book, you realize that this is precisely that - an adieu by Uderzo. It is highly improbable that he will write another Asterix book again, and so we get this Birthday book, which is basically a collage featuring characters from all the other books making an appearance in this book. The book itself is not terrible, but it's not good either! Rather like a Curate's egg!The story is weak, however I would still recommend getting this title just so one can complete one's original Asterix collection. As events have it, Asterix will probably live on and continue making appearances in new titles, however they will be titles by other authors, not Goscinny or Uderzo. That spoils the charm! I wish Uderzo had gone the Herge way, but there you have it, he's not!So, like I said - get this book just because it's going to be Uderzo's last!

Asterix & Obelix - The Movie
] Asterix & his buddy - Obelix are an aquired taste but if you love them, then this movie doesn't disappoint. Asterix, Obelix, Verciningetorix and all the others join forces to HELP Caesar fight a challenge to his authority. One word of warning - the movie is in french and if you don't understand french, you can follow along the subtitles in english. It is true to comic book adventures with wit. I loved it.

Very entertaining
My 18 year old daughter was introduced to Asterix and Obelix during a visit to France. She loved them so much that she made me buy this. This DVD has English subtitles, unlike the Asterix and Obelix Cleopatre DVD. Sometimes the translation is as funny as the movie, but it helps. Asterix and Obelix movies are largely visual slapstick anyway, so even without the translation you'd probably laugh. Don't be worried when you get the DVD and it has a Korean cover. The movie is in French with Korean and English (and I think Spanish?) subtitles. If you have the quirky sense of humor that likes Monty Python, you'll like this.

Money, Money, Money
In an effort to crush the resistant and annoying Gauls of Asterix's village, a young Roman comes up with a new plan of attack. In order to make the village come to heel, he decides to show them the benefits of Roman civilisation. Obelix starts selling menhirs to the Romans, and enjoys huge wealth and success. Soon, competition is breeding and jealousies erupt. This story is a great lesson on money, its corrupting influence, and also friendship. Even though there is this serious element to the story, you will also be having a good laugh, too. It is a great story, as per usual with Asterix and friends.

Taking care of Rocky Business
As a child, I read all of the "classic" Asterix books in Swedish. As an adult living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. In brief, Asterix and Obelix live in small village in Gaul(Ancient France) that Julius Caesar never succeeded to subdue. This is because they have a magic potion that makes the villagers super strong. In this story Julius Caesar is trying something new. Julius Ceasar is encouraging the villagers to become business men in the menhir market. He then hopes to make them so busy, wealthy and decadent that they forget about resisting Rome. All that "old Julius" accomplishes is wrecking the Roman economy. This book is one of the funniest in the series, laughs are guaranteed. Some feel this book is an attack on Capitalism. I think it depends on how you read it. I think it was a critique/satire of vanity, greed and human nature rather than an economic system. These comic books are a great way to...

Another fine mess, etc.
Rene Goscinny, Obelix and Co. (Orion, 1976)With Albert Uderzo resurrecting the Asterix series and the Bush-bashing reportedly to be found in Asterix and the Falling Sky, much has been made of the apolitical nature of the first thirty-two books in the series. I'm not terribly sure what these commentators are reading, but it certainly isn't the same books I am. Obelix and Co., especially, wears its politically-sensitive heart on its sleeve. As we all know by now, the Romans simply can't conquer this last tribe of Gauls, so one of Caesar's advisors, fresh out of business school, proposes a new strategy: get them working for Rome, and they'll become subjects pretty much by default. Caesar agrees to give it a try, so the adviser goes to Gaul and puts Obelix to work making menhirs (of course), which the Romans pay top, and ever-increasing, dollar for. The plan works like a charm, with all the other inhabitants of our favorite Gaulish village also getting involved,...

Very enjoyable.
A very enjoyable series. Of course, you have to be able to understand the subtle humor in these books. Definitely not for those who only like serious reading. If you enjoy slapstick humor you might still enjoy these, but you may want to look a little deeper than that.
