Very good comprehensive reference
I just finished reading most of this book. As background, I have rebuilt several axles before, but wanted a manual for future axle builds and to keep around the garage for reference information. I think the Amazon book description above gives a pretty fair summary of the content, but I was still pretty surprised with the amount of information in this book, as it's pretty comprehensive. The meat of the book is the steps on how to rebuild an axle and differential, but there is also a lot of other background information on topics like selecting your parts, calculating your gear ratio, and aftermarket performance part options. There are plenty of photos and illustrations to help visualize the parts and how they function and assemble. This is important to me, as I'm the type of person that likes to both read the information and see a picture to reinforce it. Also, the technical information is explained in an easy-to-understand way, with lots of examples. I think this would...

Highly Recommended
I was looking for a book to do 2 thngs. Help me diagnose my rear-end noise and determine if I can fix it my self. This book delivered on both counts. It coverd anything needed to know. I have worked on many of my own mechanical issues in the past but was always somewhat intimidated by the rear-end. This book made it clear enough for me to determine what was within my capabilities and what was not.

Product Description
All too often, when an enthusiast builds a high-performance engine, swaps a more powerful engine into a car, or mounts sticky tires, the driveline components simply can't handle the added torque and fail. In addition, differential, axles, and driveline parts have a limited life span under the power of a high-performance engine. Also, the proper gear ratios need to be selected and installed for maximum performance on the street, strip, or track. The performance of the driveshaft, differential, axle, and other driveline components needs to match the performance level of a particular engine, so maximum efficiency, longevity, and reliability can be realized.
This book covers everything you need to know about selecting the most desirable gear ratio, rebuilding differentials and other driveline components, and most importantly, matching the correct driveline components to engine power output. You ll learn how to set up a limited-slip differential, install high-performance axle shafts, swap out differential gears, and select the best available products for the driveline. This book covers the Chevy 12-bolt, Ford 9-inch, Dana units, and many other popular high-performance axles and rear ends. In addition, it explains rear differential basics, rear differential housings, rebuilding the rear differential for non-posi, limited-slip differentials, factory differentials, ring and pinion gears, axles, driveshafts, and U-joints. Solid!
Great book for getting an overview of axles. Breaks down how axles work, and all the do's and don'ts. Should help prevent mistakes for casual builders and enthusiasts. Gave it 4 stars cause its heavily focused on Ford axles but still can recommend for GM guys too.
