This cd is fantastic and has an excellent selection of songs
Robert Shaw again did an excellent job of bringing out the best of choral music, and he did it on just one cd. The energy from the chorus vibrates throughout all the songs. The chorus and conductor obviously have an excellent feel for the music, as evidenced by the dynamics. I thoroughly enjoyed the music. If you have any appreciation for choral music, you will too.

Sir Robert with ASO and Chorus at their Best!
After Mr Shaw spent many years in NYC and Cleveland with RCA Red Label,he came into Atlanta for a big change! Soon he switched to TELARC DIGITAL! I still Joyfully remember our Recording of the Christmas Nativity in Dec of 1975! Sir Robert, conducting with earphones encasing his head shouted: "Stop the taping, there is some Darn Sizzling noise in those Lights!" We may have not heard the word "Damn" lights, that he employed at times! On both this newer release of TELARC and the older Recording of The Christmas Nativity, there are Bach's Chorale, Break Forth, Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-Minor Mass, Handel's Hallelujah! Plus the exquisite, Shepherds's Farewell to the Holy Family of Berlioz's The Infant Christ! Those who may not be familiar with Berlioz from both recordings, will be richly rewarded by hearing them plus the Rex Tremendae from Berlioz''s Requiem and the other Kyrie from the Bach B-Minor! Absolutely, no other Christmas Music can ever approach these...

Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing
I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I mostly listen to rock and roll; but the way my uncle, and now I, play this thing, it is rock and roll from another era!!!

Absolutely glorious!
These musical performances are done with consummate artistry. The attack, the phrasing, the tempi, the interpretations are all presented with professionalism and first-rate musicianship. The organ and the setting, as well as choir and director, are associated worldwide with the very best in church music and this CD does not disappoint. Beloved church choral classics are all here and all performed at the highest level. A listening experience not to be missed!

Echoes from a great heritage
This is a CD that I listen to over and over. It has also been extremely useful in the classes that I teach -- and the private lessons in my studio. I have a 5th grade boys quartet who are just getting an introduction to classical music and this CD was instrumental in putting a sparkle in their eyes! I realize that the sound of the choir is one that pre-dates the Cleobury directorship, but to hear that sound evolve with the different conductors is to know that the boychoir tradition is alive and well. Thanks for a wonderful listening experience. KS in Iowa

Choral music at its absolute finest
This is choral music at its absolute finest. The tones are so pure, piercing, clear, the sound so rich, etc. etc.... it is like drinking cold, pure water on a hot muggy day. This is definitely worth the price. One of my top 10 music cd's of all time.

Exceptional collection
Some of it's secular, much of it's sacred, but Erato's recording, spanning over 300 years of some of the most harmonious and beautiful pieces of vocal music ever written, has something for almost everyone who appreciates classical music. Not only are the performances well-performed, but they also add new interpretations to some well-known pieces. I can safely say that out of more than a dozen or so recordings, this is the most anguished singing I've heard in Barber's Agnus Dei. The Choir of New College sings clearly. The voices pierce in the Agnus Dei, their articulate the liturgy of Miserere mei pleasingly, but they also add some warmth into pieces like Lux Aeterna and Mendelssohn's Hear My Prayer. The tracks are very diverse here, and the order of the pieces was apparently carefully chosen. Barber's famous (and "unkillable") Agnus Dei begins. It's a piece that has been evocative of sorrow for years (the string arrangement was played for services for such...

Music to Feed Your Soul
This is one of those albums that is conceived as a program carefully calculated to give the listener Goosebumps and evoke a tear from the eye. When lesser musicians try to pull such a stunt, the effect is maddening. You feel as though you are being emotionally manipulated, and you resent it. When the efforts of first class musicians such as Higginbottom and the Choir of New College, Oxford, attempt such a feat, it is an emotional, musical, and religious experience. The majority of the repertoire heard on this disc is quite familiar to most listeners in one form or another, but you will rarely hear a choir of such clean, precise and yet passionate sound take on these pieces. The first selection on the disc is Samuel Barber's own transcription of his "Adagio for Strings" to the Mass text, "Agnus Dei." This composition is difficult for string players to keep in tune, so we can imagine how difficult it is for a choir to sustain the pitch a cappella! The New College performance is a...

Choral music lives!!
Edward Higgenbottom is no shrinking violet! Indeed, with the production of Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei II and Nativitas, he has brought the wonderful choir of men and boys called The Choir of New College, Oxford (England) to the forefront of attention. Despite efforts to destroy this form of tradition as "elitist," Dr. Higgenbottom has proved the point: an excellent choir of men and boys must be cherished, and in this particular case, praised. One wonders, when listening to this album, whether the composers of the works represented ever heard their "musical children" performed with such polish, such musicianship, such love. My favorite selection, a difficult decision to be sure, is the Mendelssohn "Hear My Prayer," sung by treble soloist Thomas Herford with rare beauty of voice and an investment of appropriate emotion that separates his singing from that of contemporary boy sopranos. My only quibble is with the subtitle: "music of inner...

A must buy!
This is the second disc that I have absolutely just wanted to jump with choral excitement for! What a great group of performers! Their radiant tone speaks of their attention to blend and precision of breath. While I am not a huge fan of the straight tone sound, this group executes it without any hint of trouble and definitely has no intonation issues. Eric Whitacre's music is already a majestic accomplishment--the intricate harmonies in themselves are just incredible. But more exciting is to have a group like this sing his music--with such concern for tone, clarity in blend, attention to the dynamics, precision in phrasing, and performance quality of perfection! This is not your typical choral music...but it is WONDERFUL! A MUST BUY!

Amazing!
What a beautiful recording! Eric Whitacre is one of my favorite composers, and this chorus is breathtaking. The complex harmonies sound crystalline, and the musicianship is first-rate. This disc is a fine performance of some of Eric Whitacre's best-loved compositions!

An easy recommend for fans of modern choral music
If you're not already familiar with the choral music of Eric Whitacre, watch the video of his "Virtual Choir" performing "Lux aurumque". The fact that this video has already had over one million hits in only three and a half months should be an indication that Whitacre's music is loved by many. This is only the 3rd domestically available CD that I know of that concentrates solely on his choral music. Along with the inclusion of his most popular works, like "Sleep", "i thank you God for most this amazing day", and "Lux aurumque", the disc also includes rarely heard works, such as "little tree" and "Little Birds" (both for choir and piano), and the exciting "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine" (for choir and percussion instruments). The Elora Festival Singers, under the direction of Noel Edison, sound wonderful, and the sound quality of the disc offers just the right amount of reverberation and space to help the pieces come across warmly. The price makes this CD a good first...

Product Description

Eric Whitacre's dedication to the
beauty of sound, paired with
exquisite texts, results in a poetic
combination that creates a unique
sonic experience. These works
are existential choral moments,
beautifully crafted, and harmonised
to express a compressed moment in
time. Such sublime sonorities
transcend descriptions such as
'warm', 'glistening' or 'shimmering',
although these features of his choral
works do suggest affinities with
the sound worlds of Arvo Pärt
or John Tavener, for instance.
However, Whitacre's fluid lines and
blossoming harmonies give his music
its own highly personal and
irresistible magic. Top to learn more
