Well made, living world.
My EcoSphere arrived the other day! It was very well packaged and delivered really quickly. The shrimp are energetic and I have already named them: Curly, Moe and Larry. The handbook that came with the EcoSphere is informative and explains how to take care it. Not too much to do other than keep it out of direct sunlight and in a comfortable location. I'll definitely be using these for Christmas gifts. Top to learn more

That's pretty cool!
The EcoSphere got here today. It was very well packed, little chance of it breaking in transit. I noticed that the shrimp were not moving when I got it, but after about an hour they were swimming around energetically. I realized the water was just cold from shipping, after warming up they were fine and happy. =) All in all, it's really cool and a good conversation piece. I'm pleased with the purchase. Amazing
I bought this as a Christmas present for my boyfriend who is a science nerd. When I opened it I was amazed at what I saw and everyone that saw it loves it and wants one! We have open had it for about a week but we are attached to our little shrimp and love to watch them swim around. This is a great gift for anyone who is interested in science or who just loves little pets. They are great for us since we cant have a cat or dog. Love them! We can't wait to get a bigger one (I only bought a small pod)... however after reading testimonials I don't think we will need to recharge ours for many many years.Such a great present! Product Description
Small Pod EcoSphere. This fascinating enclosed world contains marine shrimp, algae and micro-organisms. Made from hand blown glass, each EcoSphere is a completely enclosed, self-sustaining little world. The EcoSphere only needs indirect light and comfortable room temperature (between 60F and 80F.) The EcoSphere works on the basis that a closed system recycles its nutrients and does not produce excess waste. The shrimp conume the algae and micro-organisms and they, in turn, break down the shrimp waste. External light, either artifical or natural, keeps the algae growing. There is no feeding or water changes required. The average life span is between 2 and 3 years. Each EcoSphere comes with a replacement, recharge or upgrade policy. Top to learn more

Confession of a Moleskine Convert
I was a die-hard Moleskine guy. Not anymore, these ecosystem journals are all I use. Here's why: - All the features of the Moleskine are there. Excellent quality of product - crisp paper, clean lines, good binding, etc. So, they are at least "as good" as Moleskine's - What sets them apart for me are the perforated pages that make it so easy to remove a page. I never knew I needed this feature, but now that I have it I use it all the time. I am a list guy, so now all of my lists can be taken out and scanned into Evernote. I am a mind-map guy... now all my scheming from a brainstorm can be taken out and... scanned into Evernote for safe keeping. Sometimes I write something down on a page that I don't particularly want to leave in the book lest someone take a peak... no problem... out comes the page. I would say 8/10 pages still stay in the journal, but for those times you need a page out... it is so handy. So that's my one big reason I love the... Top to learn more

With the right care, and it can last a looong time!
I bought one of these EcoSpheres back in 1999 for my dad as a Christmas present (yes, 12 years ago!), and it is still going strong in 2011! Algae, shrimp, everything... When I say "with the right care" in the review title, don't mistake that to mean it really requires much of any -- but it surely helps that it is kept in the right light (the algae grows with more light & shrinks with less) and the right temperature. The same results obviously cannot be guaranteed, but the one I bought has been well worth every penny and shows no signs of stopping -- so it is obviously possible. Very cool product... Top to learn more

Super Cool
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I ordered this as a Christmas gift for my 8 year old. But I was VERY pleasantly surprised! It's way cool, and exactly as advertised. Our ball has 5 shrimp, probably around 3/8" long. Very visible, the water is clean, and it's just incredibly awesome. I'm tempted to buy another one for myself to take to work with me. Very cool gift for others or yourself
OK, my "boy" is 24 years old but he loves stuff like this. He asked for it for Christmas and because it's self contained, doesn't smell or require any extra work, I happily gave it to him. It would also make an interesting gift for a grownup coworker to put on the desk. It's small enough not to be a bother but big enough to be interesting. And apparently you can send it in if the shrimp die and "recharge" it. I'm not sure quite what that involves, but for less than the price of a new one, you get an ecosphere that's been revived. You're not just buying a gadget, you're more often than not buying into an ecosystem. Imagine a collection of apps that would allow a library user to easily locate materials of interest from his/her library, download library and/or public domain e-books and read them, listen to audiobooks or music from the library, perhaps watch... The Kindle Fire is built on Android but it's designed to entrench users into the Amazon ecosystem NOT Google/Android. What about our library ecosystem, which is designed to support content across devices. The major competing ecosystems at the moment are Apple, Google/Android, Microsoft Windows and Amazon. And even if we can't control the hardware, couldn't we come up with some ideas on how to optimize as many devices as possible for a library ecosystem. I realized when I recently went back to iPhone after about 2 years with Android how easy it was to slip back into the Apple ecosystem with my phone. Apple's ecosystem is built around hardware. So, new hardware is easily integrated into the ecosystem. But I think it's important to consider ecosystems when talking about gadgets these days. Ideally, as far as the company is concerned, your ties to that ecosystem may well last long after the particular gadget has met its end, preferably in a sound recycling program.
For the software industry, tolerance of pirated contents has been part of the ecosystem for quite a while as well. The discussion started with a little tour de table on a French TV network… In can’t stand Glenn Close speaking French, you see…” It turned out that everybody admitted to copious downloading, making this little sample of the anti-Sarkozy media... HADOPI was the same breed as the now comatose American PIPA ( Protect Intellectual Property Act ) and SOPA ( Stop Online Piracy Act ). The French law was based on a three-strikes-and-you-are-disconnected system, aimed at the most compulsive... BigChampagne’s clients can pull up information about popularity and market share (what percentage of file-sharers have a given song). The gathering was meant to be an informal discussion among media people about Nicolas Sarkozy’s push for the HADOPI anti-piracy bill. For a long time, illegal file-sharing has been a powerful market and promotional tool for the music industry. For the Seattle firm, the US and the Chinese markets are roughly of the same size: 75 million PC shipments in the US for 2010, 68 million in China. There is no doubt, though, that piracy is inflicting a great deal of harm on the software industry. There, 78% of PC software is pirated, vs. 20% in the US. as a result, Microsoft makes the same revenue from the Chinese than from… the Netherlands. Take Microsoft and the Chinese market.
The problem that some pundits bring out is that once you buy into one ecosystem, you're locked in. The apps, services, content, and even hardware that are configured for that ecosystem cannot be transferred or used for or with another ecosystem. Not just products that were built to sync with certain gadgets, but an ecosystem built around Android, iOS, Windows, or some other OS. It's not just AirPlay being compatible with certain TVs, or speakers with correct docking stations. What makes it an ecosystem is the fact that you can use these apps, services, and content on multiple devices. You could say that an ecosystem, as it relates to the consumer space, is the combination of devices, services, content, apps, and an OS. As Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman and former CEO of Google, put it, it is 'scalable network platforms'. True to the point, as Wood brings out, even Apple said in its Australian legal battle against Samsung that people who buy Samsung's product will "then be Android people and the investment in the apps that they make to purchase on their Galaxy Tab... Hardware is the portal so as exciting as smartphones and tablets have been in the past year or so, the ecosystem era is just now starting and will bring even more exciting developments. The new ecosystem era will allow everything in your life to work together and communicate with one another. These products will run as an ecosystem. The power of the ecosystem Last week, I wrote an article about HDTVs and how Google, Microsoft, and Apple could become the new leaders in that realm. She argues that "Android apps can't run on Apple products, just as Apple apps can't run on Android.
