A Solid Successor to the Kindle Keyboard
For my review, I'm going to focus it on the differences between the previous (which I'll refer to as the K3), and the Kindle Touch (KT)USE - As far as the reading experience, I really like the touch compared to the physical buttons on the previous generation. At first I was worried that I would constantly be turning the page from accidentally touching the screen, but this didn't become much of an issue. The screen is broken up into mapped sections, so if you touch the far left side that covers about 1" of the left of the screen, it goes to the previous page. If you touch anywhere on the other 80% of the screen beside that, it goes forward. Touch the top 1" margin, and it will bring up the menu. There is also a physical button on the...

First Kindle: Chose Touch over the Keyboard
I've had my Touch for almost a day now, and it's pretty awesome. I'm not a big reviewer, but I figured several people may be in a similar position as I was yesterday, so here we go...I'm definitely an avid reader. Actually, as I type this, I have roughly 1000 books sitting on a wall of shelves behind me. E-readers have always intrigued me, but I've never felt like they were worth $199 or more; however, when the Kindle Fire was announced, I thought they had released the Kindle for me.I watched video reviews, "hands-on" videos, read numerous reviews, etc. I was pretty sure that I wanted a Fire, but as I thought about it, I wasn't convinced that the Fire really provided me with access to anything that I couldn't do on my phone (HTC Inspire 4g). Other than a bigger screen, the Fire was actually pretty limited (for my purposes). I mean, I would only be able to use the browser and watch videos in areas with WiFi (i.e. at home, at work, or at retail location with...

A worthy upgrade over other Kindles!
Customer Video Review Length:: 9:09 MinsPlease watch my video review here. Thanks for watching and I hope it helps.General observations:- Controlling/manipulating things on the screen is so much easier with the touch screen-it's a lot more intuitive!- Athough I don't show it in the video, you can swipe instead of tap to turn pages. You may also use your left hand to page forward by tapping slightly more in from the left edge. It works quite well.- Looking up a word is as easy as pressing on that word. No more fumbling with a 5-way controller. You can additionally highlight blocks of text quite easily by just swiping over it.- Kindle Touch also has the new X-Ray feature which is really neat. It can be interesting to see a summary listing of facts from a given book about a person mentioned for instance. The Kindle Keyboard does not include this feature.

Buy the correct stylus
This review has stirred interest beyond the value of said stylus. These are inexpensive, ok, cheap, stylus. I bought them to test on a cheap tablet I was testing and they worked very good. If they are lost, stolen or eaten by Fido, who cares. We are talking about bang for the buck here. And yes, they are made across the big pond.If you need status, spend the big bucks, but don't cry if it goes missing. It could be hiding next to that missing $200.00 remote.Better yet, make one yourself, it's a fun and interesting project. Brings out that MacGyver rush from the 80's.There are three (3) types of touch screens, buy the correct stylus for your...

Kindle vs. Nook (updated November 2011)
UPDATE NOVEMBER 2011:My review is now over a year old, as is the "Kindle Keyboard" as Amazon calls it now. There are newer models: the basic, cheapie Kindle and the Kindle Touch, and of course the Kindle Fire quasi-tablet.Each of these models is an excellent choice. Whichever one is right for you just depends on your preferences. The 3 e-ink Kindles are Kindle Keyboard (this one), Kindle Touch (the newest "flagship" model), and the basic Kindle. All 3 of them have EXACTLY THE SAME 6" DISPLAY, with the same sharp typeface and high contrast that reads like ink on paper with no eyestrain. The Kindle Keyboard is the oldest of these models, and I got one of the first ones when they came out in August 2010.I still absolutely LOVE my Kindle Keyboard and use it almost every day. I have read dozens of books on it. I like the newer models, they have some neat features, but the experience of reading a book on them is no better or worse than on...

A hesistant buyer rejoices on his choice
I researched the purchase of a Kindle for a long time. I couldn't decide whether or not it was worth buying a dedicated e-reader. Boy am I glad I made this purchase. The downside to Amazon's online selling of Kindle 3 is that the customers don't get to see it in person. It is much better in person. This may sound stupid, but when I got my new Kindle, I thought there was a stuck-on overlay on the screen containing a diagram of the unit's buttons, etc. I actually tried to peel it off. Doh! The e-ink on this unit is THAT good. I didn't realize that I was staring at the actual display. I also didn't realize that no power is required until the display changes. (thus the great battery life) I do a lot of reading, but was facing the prospect of reading less or buying large type books because of my variable and deteriorating eyesight. The new Kindle has been a godsend. Now, I can decide the size of type I need depending on my level of fatigue among other things. The weight and ergonomics are...

The new Kindle also offers 20 percent faster page turns, up to one month of battery life, double the storage to 3,500 books, built-in Wi-Fi, a graphite color option and more—all for only $139. Worth the money. Not perfect, but very very good for start to finish novels in good light
The Kindle is my first e-ink reader. I own an iPad, an iPhone, and have owned a Windows-based phone in the past that I used as an ereader. My overall impression of the device is good. The good:I'd honestly rather read linear (read from page one to the end, one page at a time) fiction from it than a book, because I can't always get comfortable with a book. Hardcovers are sometimes a bit heavy, and paperbacks don't always lie open easily. The Kindle is incredibly light and thin. I can hold it in one hand easily. The page turn buttons are conveniently located. Page-turns aren't instant, but they're probably quicker than turning a physical page in a printed book (there are just a lot more page-turns unless you choose a small font). The contrast is better than other ereaders I've seen. There is zero eye strain in good light. My eyesight isn't the greatest and I like being able to increase the font size and read without glasses. I love being able to...

nice update to a solid often over looked reader
overall this is a wonderful reader. you don't have to pay extra to get a version without ads. sony has been in the ereader business long before it was mainstream. the new improvement in adding the wifi to its reader and bring the price down to 149 is long over-dued and in my opinion is the main reasons that has kept it from competing well and being as well known as the other big name readers we all know now. this version is made in a feather light weight plastic and rubber and a touch of metal instead of the aluminum that the others were. the touch screen is very responsive and you can change which way for the swipe. there are more options of fonts and sizes than before. the multi language built in dictionary, notation, search on google and wikipedia are well implemented. the online reader store experience is decent and has the usual best sellers at about the same prices as all other online sellers.the sony reader store itself has always been a bit quirky and at times...

PDF viewing tool (3.5 stars with a round-up)
As the title suggests, my focus of this review is using the Sony Reader as a tool for reading PDF files. As a LOT of products (software, electronic gadgets, etc) don't print manuals anymore, I've amassed a bunch of PDF files that I would love to have easier access to, while on a plane, doing my business in the "library", lying in bed, or wherever. Realizing some kind of "e-reader" might just let me do casual PDF perusing under those aforementioned conditions, I started researching some of the e-readers a few months ago. After lots of Googling, browsing, and reading, it seemed that most of the then-on-the-market readers didn't handle PDF files so well. From what I read though, one of the older Sony readers was significantly better than the rest (Kindle, Nook, etc) for handling PDF's and when I learned that Sony was releasing the PRS-T1, I was hoping it was an above average PDF-reader as well.So I went to YouTube to watch a few video reviews for the PRS-T1 and...

The reader is mostly wonderful; its computer software is frustrating but you don't need it anyway
I have the red version of this reader, identical to this except for its color, which I had a rough honeymoon with but have ultimately come to love when I'm using it for its most important purpose, reading. The touch screen is very sensitive, it's beautiful and light weight, there are multiple fonts and text sizes to choose from, and the wifi feature, especially the ability to connect directly with my local libraries to borrow books, is a mostly wonderful option.Maybe because this reader can do so many things, it's more finicky than my Sony 350 which is a generation older than the PRS-T1. I have never had my 350 freeze, but in the short time that I've had the PRS-T1 I've had to reset it 4 times. Usually it has happened when I'm flicking the "pages", something that works perfectly most of the time, which somehow sets off wild unstoppable page turning ultimately freezing the device. If you are used to earlier Sony readers, this one requires a tap,...

Generic USB charger, USB cable not included
This exact power adapter comes standard with what Amazon calls now the 'Kindle Keyboard' models (Kindle 3) but NOT with the Kindle Touch and the least expensive model ($79 no touch) now known as plain 'Kindle'. It can be used just about anywhere in the world (100-240V) for as long as you have the proper plug adapter. To charge a Kindle you will need a generic USB Type A/Micro B cable and one is supplied with every Kindle purchased and you can do it in several different ways:- Off a laptop or PC through one of their 'powered' USB ports (you will need a laptop or a PC)- With this adapter which comes with all Kindle 3s or can be purchased separately (you will need the Amazon-supplied or any generic USB cable)- With a third-party, branded or generic USB charger (search Amazon for either 'kindle charger' or 'usb charger')This specific charger works for all 3d and 4th generation Kindles and is also great for charging lots of other gadgets that...

You Might Need This If You Plan to Buy Any Of the Newest 2011 Kindles Except the Fire!
The newly announced $79 Kindle, the Kindle Touch Wi-Fi and Kindle Touch 3G come with an included USB 2.0 cable that you can use to charge your device by connecting it to a computer. But the specs also say:"U.S. POWER ADAPTER SOLD SEPARATELY"So you are going to need one of these if you ordered one of these Kindles and want to wall charge it. I guess that's why they are 50% off. Amazon is trying to take some of the sting out of the deal for when everyone finds out that they need an adapter to plug/charge it in a wall outlet. In the past all Kindles came with the adapter included in the purchase price. Welcome to the new AMAZON! Nice plus, however, is that it will also charge any iPod that charges via USB.This is the same adapter that you should already have if you own one of the the latest generation Kindles, so no need to buy a 2nd one. I lost the adapter on my Kindle 3 and had to buy one of these. It works as it should, it charges the Kindle and...

Stamp on an Amazon logo
I received the USB charger in a plastic bag in an padded envelope from UPS. It's a tad bit expensive for a regular USB charger. Hopefully, it's for the quality, not for the Amazon logo. I bought it for the Kindle Touch, which ironically will still not be here for another 2 months. For those of you wondering, the charger has an input of 100-240V-0.15A 50/60 Hz and output of 5.0 V and .85A, so it should work for the foreign outlets that have different voltages. Also, it charges my iPod Touch, so I assume that it can work for most consumer products that need to be charged by the USB. In addition, this is small enough that it can fit with one slot in a surge protector.Edit:Forget to mention that it's made in China.

Great device, you will enjoy it
I picked mine up today at Best Buy. At home I plugged it in and set up the WIFI and my Amazon account and it immediately told me that an update was downloading. After about 10 to 12 minutes it rebooted and started working. I own an iPhone, iPad 2, HP Touchpad and a Kindle Keyboard version. This device compares with the Ipad. The reviews that blast the Kindle Fire as being no good are just not true. I am a retired CEO and computer Guru and have a great WIFI set up in my home. Here is my quick and dirty review:WIFI fast and easy to set up and useKeyboard types great, much better than the HP Touchpad and as good if not better than the iPad.Display high resolution comparable to the iPad 2The device downloaded my 100 books in minutes. Most books downloaded to the device in 3 to 4 seconds. A couple of large books took 5 seconds and I am talking about books with 800 pages!Web browsing is extremely fast. I loaded up a dozen...

A great device WHEN you consider price and function, with a few flaws
The first and most important thing that should be said about the Kindle Fire is that this is not an "iPad-killer." It is not designed to be. I have seen so many articles and comments comparing this to the iPad, and surveys where people are asked if they will be buying a Kindle Fire over an iPad this Christmas. If you are expecting an iPad, or even a tablet, you will be disappointed. The main purpose of this device is to deliver Amazon content to you more effectively. It is designed for consumption, not creation. That is the reason it is so cheap and why Amazon is taking a loss on it. They are hoping to make up for that loss through sales of videos, music, books, and apps through Amazon's Web Services. You can also use it to view your own movies and media, but will find that it is more limited in that way than a regular tablet. Personally, as someone who has ordered several rentals from Amazon Video, and had to contact customer support for every single one of them due to...

I want to love it, I really do. But I can't.
As a long-time Kindle fan I was eager to get my hands on a Fire. For the most part I've found that it does what I wanted it to, which is be the one device I can take with me anywhere. There are some great features; the reader app is excellent (though not without flaws), the app store experience is terrific, videos are fantastic, and the device is quick and for the most part dead-simple to use, all thanks to the services Amazon provides. And of course the extras that come with Prime membership really make it a real value - I won't be cancelling my Netflix streaming account just yet (watching Netflix on the Fire works very well) but I imagine within a year Amazon's free streaming video catalog will be just as good as Netflix. The free "lending library" book every month really is the icing on the cake though, and makes Prime membership a no-brainer. The hardware itself is solid and has a quality feel, it's just the right size for one-handed use, and the screen is fantastic (for an LCD...

To load pages more quickly, the new generation only flashes every five page turns. Design The GlowLight adds a new scratch-resistant screen coating, and the Simple Touch's rubberized matte design is far tougher than the easy-to-chip silver paint on the current Kindles. If that's the case, you'll read this and say: "I'd totally buy this. The latest Nook is the new king of the eReaders. Older eReaders flashed&mdash.  You can download free books onto it and you can still buy e-books and use those. First, what I write can't really be called reviews, because I deliberately leave out any kind of description of a book's plot or characters - I like a blank slate when I start a book and I'm assuming you do too.  However, I bought an iPhone when my old flip phone died, and now I am reading books on it.  So I am ready to pass on my trusty PDA at a low, low bargain price. This blog has been full of raves over how much I love my old Palm m500 PDA because I can scroll e-books on it.  All of those things are still true. I love reading and it's rare for me to bring home a book that doesn't wow me or at least please me, which is why I don't accept ARCs. The best part is, if you break it, it will have cost you only a fraction of the cost of a new e-reader such as the Kindle, Nook, or Sony Reader. Second, I almost never criticize anything about a book.
