Product Description

Helen Tiegs didn't take to driving a tractor when she became a farmer's wife, but after fifty years she considers herself the hub of the family operation.

Lila Hill taught piano, then ultimately took a job off the farm to augment the family income during a period of rising costs. From Montana's cattle pastures to New Mexico's sagebrush mesas, women on today's ranches and farms have played a crucial role in a way of life that is slowly disappearing from the western landscape.

Recalling her own family-farm ties, Sandra Schackel set out to learn how these women's lives have changed over the second half of the twentieth century. In Working the Land, she collects oral histories from more than forty women--in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, and Texas--recalling their experiences as ranchers and farmers in a modernizing West.

Through this diverse group of women--white and Hispanic, rich and poor, ranging in age from 24 to 83--we gain a new perspective on their ties to the land. Although western ranch and farm women have often been portrayed as secondary figures who devoted themselves to housekeeping in support of their husbands' labors, Schackel's interviews reveal that these women have had a much more active role in defining what we know as the modern American West.

As Schackel listened to their stories, she found several currents running through their recollections, such as the satisfaction found in living the rural lifestyle and the flexibility of gender roles. She also learned how resourceful women developed new ways to make their farms work--by including tourism, summer camps, and bed-and-breakfast operations--and how many have become activists for land-based issues. And while some like Lila made the difficult decision to work off the farm, such sacrifices have enabled families to hold onto their beloved land.

Rich with memory and insight into what makes America's family farms and ranches tick, Working the Land provides a deeper understanding of the West's development over the last fifty years along with new perspectives on shifting attitudes toward women in the workforce. It is both a long-overdue documentation of the lives of hard-working farm women and a celebration of their contributions to a truly American way of life. Top to learn more

Independent Filmmaking at its finest!
A great low budget horror film! Nothing like the standard horror fare we've come to expect with modern horror, the story is meticulous and careful with its characters, slowly but confidently introducing us to a world gone very wrong. Michael Hotop was phenomenal in the lead role and I was generally impressed with the make up and effects. Overall, I would say it was most reminiscent of Night of the Living Dead and the character driven horror films from the 70s and 80s.

Cool Horror Movie
Loved this movie! You never see horror movies like this focus on the characters anymore! I don't want to ruin anything, but I loved that it wasn't even clear what the overall threat of the world they lived in was until about a third of the way in. Very cool, little horror film- I highly recommend it!

Cool Drama/Horror Movie
Speaking as someone who does not generally consider themself a "horror" fan, I was very impressed by the independent film "FARM". It was definitely a slow burning film, carefully paced, but done so in a way that made it feel natural and kept me engrossed. The effects and overall look of the film were strong as well. I was especially impressed with the lead actor, Michael Hotop, whose progression in the film is very interesting to watch and who has a powerful screen presence. I was a big fan of the story, but more importantly of the characters and the how the film employed its "zombie" menace to serve as a catalyst to make them change and explore what people are truly capable of.

10 Acres Enough is probably enough (the book I mean)
I have read a lot of smallholding or small farming books lately. I have been looking for one that is just right. A little bit of city life before moving to the country. A little bit of trial and error. Some funny stories and some worked examples of how it actually worked. This is an old title. The language is quite 'ye olde' style but it has a charm that also hooks you. If you are interested in farming then you will find yourself really looking forward to the end of each season to find out how it went. The descriptions of technique and the financial accounting of farming results might be a little old for the figures to be relevant but the methods are great. You also find yourself admiring this family for their diligence and willingness to 'have a go'. This book will only increase your desire to sell your city apartment and buy 10 acres of weed infested land to do the same yourself, so be warned! I have read this one a few times now and would recommend it to...

Teacher and Parent
I bought this for my son's third birthday. He's already an avid entomologist. The larvae arrived just as expected already shedding its skin, which each one did multiple times. It was fascinating for my husband and me as well. The three of us found ourselves glued together watching these amazing creatures as the larvae shed it's final skin and entered the pupa stage. Several days after the fully-formed ladybugs emerged (they were yellow at first), we set them free into our back yard. They have a distinct appearance which is slightly different than the ladybugs we're accustomed to seeing around here. Therefore we have been able to easily identify them when we come across them in our yard. We received about 14 or 15 ladybug larvae and all survived to become ladybugs except for one, which I consider to be pretty impressive. The container was especially effective because my son was not able (or tempted) to manhandle to ladybugs, yet it was easy to keep the water filled with the...

A neat learning experience...
My 4 year old daughter is a ladybug nut. We got this for Christmas and sent away for our larvae which come in a tube in the mail with all the food they need. Even the adults were fascinated watching the larvae turn to pupa and then to ladybugs. The customer service was very helpful when we called because our bugs stopped doing anything. They told us the bugs were "dormant" because it was too cold in my daughters room. We moved them to a warmer spot and within 30 minutes had ladybugs!! Definitely worth the cost. It is clean and sturdy thank goodness! Although the inside does get slightly messy (of course). We loved it.

A ladybug lover's dream
My 3-year old absolutely LOVES ladybugs, and this item was a big hit with her. We kept it on the kitchen counter, near where we eat, and the ladybugs and their activities were always a popular dinner conversation topic! When the weather turned warm enough, we released the ladybugs in our yard and watched each and every one of them spread their wings and fly away. I am sure we will order additional larvae and do it all over again. The product is sturdy (we just had to remind our daughter not to jostle or try to lift the dome) and makes it easy to achieve successful results. A very fun and experience for the entire family!!

"Pulls cars outta ditches"
This is the only dvd my son will actually sit down and watch. He loves the Old McDonald part of the dvd. I just wonder what kind of farm Old McDonald runs because when Farmer Joe talks about what a tractor does, he states "pulls cars outta ditches". Classic! I've seen this masterpiece about 10 times and I haven't gotten tired of it yet! I wish I could only find more dvds that had Old McDonald and Farmer Joe in them.

Great DVD for budding young Horse lovers
Ever since we watched the Rose Bowl parade my daughter has been pointing to the TV and saying "horses" (she is only 18 months) I was really grateful to find this DVD. The horse section of this DVD is perfect because all of the narration is accompanied by video footage of horses. No talking heads just horses! Yea! It also uses the ABCs to talk about different horse terms ie "A is for Arabian." I would reccommend it for anyone who needs a good all horses, all the time DVD. I can't speak to the "All about the Farm" section b/c we are too busy watching horses.

Pretty good video!
I have yet to find a video that actually keeps my 3 year olds attention the entire time but he does like this one. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have continuous play! I think all DVD's should just automatically do this. My son likes the farm side versus the horse side!

Buy Farm Land

Foreign ownership of land has come under the microscope since last week with the OIO approving the sales of 16 Crafar farms to a Chinese company and US movie director James Cameron getting the go-ahead to buy 1000ha of farmland in the Wairarapa. Now what I have written might sound over the top to most but look what happened in Ireland when absent Land owners owned nearly all the land that lead to the so called potato famine of the 1840's. since when are foreigner's allowed to buy up NZ land. The increasing quantity and frequency of land sales to overseas owners is not acceptable, regardless of which ones are more economically threatening. Mr Couchman said he wanted to buy one of the farms and employ people to run it but his offer could not compete with that made by the foreign investor. An application for approval to buy four beef and sheep farms for conversion to pine forestry in the Whangamomona-Tahora area was lodged with the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) in the middle of last year. I have got a problem with them changing the land use. A lot of people don't want it but they don't want to put pen to paper," he said. He said his client planned to plant 2000 hectares in pine trees and other species over a number of years, with pastoral farming continuing on the properties in the meantime. The sale of the Whangamomona farms would be hard on the heels of those deals, with the money for their purchase already deposited in a New Zealand bank.

01/03/12 of last month the Cecil County Commissioners voted unanimously to buy a farm for preservation purposes costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars — was this really what we want government to spend money on.  Cecil County...  No other industry is regulated or subsidized to the extent that agriculture is — the industry literally has a government department at the federal and every state level dedicated to it. There is no problem with private land trusts with private...  Perhaps they do not have enough revenue because they choose to spend money “preserving land” rather than putting police officers on the streets or fixing pot holes.  We should be questioning whether these departments and programs are actually helping farmers or hurting them, yet our County Commissioners and some County Executive candidates believe Cecil County should contribute further to the problem by...
