Best Emergency Radio
If you are looking for an Emergency 2 way radio, look no further.Pros:1. AM/FM - These are not Bose speakers, but they are clear. It works just like portable battery powered radios. This is useful in emergencies when the TV and cable are knocked down so you can get news from stations that are still transmitting. I take it out with me on my patio and just listen to music or news.2. Multiple power source - Can run on Alkaline, included Rechargeable battery pack, AC socket, DC through the cigarette lighter, or just cranking to recharge the batteries. With all those sources of energy, you will never run out of power.3. 5 Watt GMRS Radio - It truly is powerful. Just as strong as my professional radios. Excellent as a base station when traveling or trying to look for help in an emergency.4. Portability - It comes with a strap so that you dont have to hold it when moving about. It also has a handle so you have a firm grip when carrying...

Surprise Performer
I bought this radio based on Google reviews as I wanted a crank AM-FM primarily. But the GMRS side of this radio is superb, the NiMH battery with additional AA alk options, hand mic/speaker are most welcome.I use FRS/GMRS quite a bit both on the Motorola commercial side, Ham and family. I have used scores of different radios from $10 junk FRS walkies to $1000 commercial 2-way. For the price, the GMRS performance is excellent. Sensitive receiver, credible power (not published; but I'm guessing 2 watts on the GMRS channels), good carrier and PL/DCS squelch systems and all the junk beeps and bops are disabled by default. The weather and other features are icing on a a fine cake.Only downside for my application is that the size of the unit is fairly large. It currently is on 7/24 in my office sitting on GMRS channel 7, PL 22. It is replacing my desktop Audiovox 2000 as my full time monitor radio.

Everything You Need to Prepare for the Technican Grade License
Since the telegraphy requirement was dropped in early 2007---the only thing that stands between you and an amateur radio license is a 35-question, multiple choice exam. The exam questions are drawn from a pool of over 350 prospective questions in the following areas:T1 FCC RulesT2 Operating ProceduresT3 Radio Wave Characteristics and PropogationT4 Amateur Radio PracticesT5 Electrical PrinciplesT6 Electical components, semiconductors, circuit diagrams, component functionsT7 Station equipmentT8 Modulation modes, amateur satellite operations, operating activities, non-voice communicationsT9 Antennas and feedlinesT0 SafetyA technical whiz can breeze through T5 and T6--but other sections deal with law (T1) and common operating practices (T2)--details that cannot be deduced from fundamental principles...so virtually everyone is going to need to bone up on some of the material to successfully pass the exam...

Everything I needed and expected
The Ham Radio License Manual for Technician was everything I needed and expected. I did not have the available time to attend an instructor led class to learn this information. The book was written and presented in a very easy to understand way. I'm now looking forward to progressing on to learn the the General license material.

Ham Radio License manual with Practice Exam Software CD included. Top to learn more

All you need to pass the exam!
I used this book along with the free practice tests on eham.net, and passed the real exam with a score of 33 out of 35. I spent about 3 weeks studying off and on, and also consulted a few outside sources for more information on inductors & capacitors (just for more of an understanding ... completely overkill for passing the Technician exam). The testing software on the CD-ROM has some major bugs in it; I was not able to review which questions I missed once completing a practice exam! Perhaps this is an issue with my OS (Windows 7 Enterprise w/ all the latest updates)? In case anyone is wondering, HAM Radio for Dummies has some useful information, but is not intended as a study guide for passing the Technician exam. Also, don't waste time or money on any of the sites that charge a fee for practice tests--eham.net has it covered (again, for free). When ordering this book, make sure you're actually getting the latest edition--there are several older...

Nice package
First off I want to say it feels solid. Unlike the Motorola one I had that had parts rattling in it from day one and lasted 6 months. I have been using it at work with a headset as well. It accepts all headset/speaker combos that use a Kenwood style jack. I have gotten great reception with this radio and my coworkers have all commented on how clear my transmissions are with or without the headset. I can also listen to the FM radio and transmit/receive on a VHF band at the same time. It is compact and the clip is a sturdy stamped metal. It was easy to program and didn't even need the supplied computer software. I had to reset all settings to get the radio to transmit on my works channels but that is done on the unit. Good buy.

A great 2-meter transceiver.
For the price the TYT TH-F5 is hard to beat. Anyone that is looking for a good starter HAM radio... this is it. As a first responder backup communication is a must. So when the power goes out and the cell-towers are jammed this can be a life saver. Oh I bought two. His and Hers. You will need to have a Ham license.

A great introduction to a fun avocation
I am often asked why I am still interested in ham radio when it is so easy for people to communicate by e-mail and cellular phone. The answer, as is so forcefully brought home in this excellent book, is that ham radio is fun, challenging, rewarding, and provides opportunities for personal growth. While the major objective of the book is to provide information to get newcomers into the hobby and to help get them productive and successful, there is something here that can be useful to even the most experienced operators. There are many ways people have found to enjoy the various technical, recreational, educational, and social aspects of ham radio. They are covered in this well-written book. Ward is an operator of the first caliber. His advice is based upon personal experience, not based upon interpreting what some others person has told him. He is also a very funny person and he has a unique ability to find whatever humor exists in a situation. Therefore the tone of his book...

Get a good idea of what's in the forest
Have you ever wondered about those "amateur radio" license plates you see on cars? Do you see disproportionally large antennas on tall towers at some homes? Wouldn't it be really neat to be able to set up an antenna, radio, and antenna and communicate from literally anywhere, to just about anywhere, in any kind of weather, without having to be tethered to some electrical outlet? If you think I'm kidding about this, I'm not--people do this very thing everyday, from houses, hotels, boats, bikes, International Space Station, while hiking, running errands, or just seeing how many countries they can contact! Yes, you read right--different countries, from bicycles! Please stop me before I type another exclamation point!Well, this is an excellent book to start with, in the familiar "for Dummies" format that flies you over the forest that is ham radio, and gives an overview of: signal formats, operating tips and advice, public and emergency service, radio contesting,...

Q5
Q5 is not a rating. In radio lingo, it means excellent readability. If you are thinking about getting into Amateur Radio, this is the book you should read first. If the ink is still wet on your FCC license, this is the book you should read now. Even if you have a collection of tickets dating back to Marconi, this is the book you should read to make sure you are up to date; you'll find something interesting that you didn't know in this book. I think HRFD is the most comprehensive and readable overview of Amateur Radio available.Let me emphasize that word "overview." Will you be able to take and pass your Technician License test after reading this book? The answer is "NO!" You will still need to study one or more of the fine ARRL test prep books before you sit for your exam. HRFD provides very little depth on any individual topic; HRFD's strength lies in providing a broad, very readable survey of the many aspects of ham radio. It has something to say about how to get a...

Plain and straightforward
First, let me state that there is nothing new in this book. All the questions are public domain, and can be freely obtained from dozens of online sources. What is unique about this particular book is the arrangement of the questions into short 3-4 page "chapters" of related information. Small chunks of information, review quiz, then a one-page "cliffs notes" version of the most important information. My 9-year-old has been studying on-and-off for several months using several different (ARRL, Gordo, "Dummies") traditional study materials. He kept putting them down. The bite-sized chunks of information as presented in this book has been perfect for him. He goes through a chapter in about 10 minutes, one chapter per night. I go over the quiz with him at the end of the chapter and he is consistently at 90 - 95%. At this rate he will be ready to test at the May VE session. I think I have struck paydirt this time.

Exactly As Advertised--Everything You Need To Know
This is the first time I took a course which taught to the exam. And that's exactly what it does with brief explanations along the way. My purpose was to legally use a mobile scanner while traveling. One such way in Florida is to possess a ham license. All 396 questions from the exam pool are presented along with the correct and incorrect multiple choices. The course contains 35 sections of 11 to 13 questions each. There are sample exams of 35 questions, Easy, Challenging and Hard. Each question relates to a section. If one studies faithfully and reviews past topics the correct answers at exam time will almost pop out at you at first glance. Daily I covered about 3 new sections and reviewed selected past topics in 30 minutes to an hour plus. This will vary dependent on ones background. I felt confident after two weeks and spent the last week before the exam spot checking to stay current. Three weeks after receiving this book I aced the Technician...

Awesome
Very well written, Keeps the flow going and not boring. This author does a excellent job of helping you understand and remember. Very well thought out. Each chapter has Questions with one answer, then the quiz which you select one answer out of four. After the Quiz a quick review and then onto next chapter. End of book has 3 exams with answers at the end. If this author were to publish the General Class and Extra I'd buy without hesitation.

Best of the lot!
If you are seeking a rugged, dependable 2 meter transceiver for base or mobile applications, then look no further! This little gem has everything you will need for FM operation and it also has power to spare.I've been running this radio for 8 months or so. With my home made copper pipe J-pole mounted only sixteen feet in the air I can hit repeaters as far away as New Orleans from my Mobile, AL home. This isn't entirely due to the power either as I never need the full 75 watts. In fact, I have pumped it up to full only once!Receive is exceptionally clear as well. Honestly, guys, THIS needs to be your first choice in 2 Meter operations.

Very good, solid transciever
I should preface by saying I am not an amateur radio operator myself, this was a gift for my wife who is and plans on using this radio for RACES and ARES work. She set up the radio in the house with a 12V power supply and was operating, believe it or not, with a mag-mount mobile antenna on a cookie sheet, and after digging through the manual was immediately making contacts and hitting area repeaters.the radio is obviously very well constructed. There is nothing cheap or shabby about this piece of equipment. It is extremely solid and well made. The body of the radio is dominated by a massive heat sink. The fit and finish is flawless. The controls are easy to grasp and operate, important in a mobile unit.Sound qualiuty from the built in speaker is excellent and it can pump out enough volume to deal with a noisy mobile environment. As for operation, it's a Yaesu, and every piece of Yaesu equipment she's owned has been excellent, and this radio is no...
