Why We Love Mike Holmes
When I saw the star rating for this book, I doubted that it would be deserved. Even the Taunton Books have some weak areas, so I have become skeptical. However, this book is nearly flawless, at least as far as what I bought it for. The fact that tables of information are included is very important for me. He doesn't just talk about different types of insulation in the text, he charts out the different types. The unique value of this book however, is the wisdom he shares after encountering so many different situations and finding solutions to them. It is unbelievably difficult to find some solutions to renovation problems. Most books simply talk about simple, standard situations, not the difficult ones. His discussion of basement refinishing for a living space is absolutely priceless. I wonder whether this advice is anywhere else in print. The truly amazing thing, however, is that a book as valuable as this, printed on sturdy glossy paper stock and...

Useful for more than renovation
While I'm not in the process of home renovation, I have been house hunting in a new city (USA). This book has become my precious reference for insuring that other people have had their renovations done "right". Now I check for permits, have an outline of questions to ask the realtor, owner and home inspector. Mike has made me a MUCH better consumer and I thank him many times over for it.11/2011 update: I am giving this book to a family member and ordered the trade version, which is more detailed, for myself. Either way, the information is invaluable. Still 5 stars!

What else would you expect?
If you've ever seen his shows, you know the character of Mike Holmes only allows himself to do things one way; The right way! Oh what a world this would be if everyone was half as honorable as this man. That being said, his book is every bit as informative and entertaining as his shows are. I cannot speak as to the helpfulness of the information to the professional as I am not myself a licensed general contractor, but I have a hard time believing anybody but won't end up giving this book 5 stars once they read it. If I must pick something out to jeer about, it would have to be the fact that it is of course written with Canadian codes in mind, since Mr. Holmes is of course, Canadian. But those instances are far too infrequent to tarnish this title.

A How to be a customer of home renovations
This book was an easy read and included a lot of helpful information on what to look for in a contractor you are considering for any home renovation project. The book also includes helpful tips and product recommendations for the building materials that should be used to ensure you get the best bang for your buck. These materials may cost a little more up front but they will last a lot longer if installed properly and help you to avoid having to do it all over again. Since this book is written in lay terms it was easy to understand and helpful since I am considering a bathroom renovation. It has already helped me to avoid hireing two contractors who wanted to tell me what products would be used instead of accepting my specified materials. Thanks Mike and keep up the good work. I love the TV show and am waiting with anticipation for your next book.

He Wrote it Right!
If you're a "Holmes on Homes" fan, then I hardly need tell you to buy this book. Mike distills his common sense, no BS, no cutting corners, approach into a well-organized, well-written book.If you don't know about the show, Holmes is a very special general contractor. He goes into homes where the original contractor bungled the job, ripped off the owner, or both. He digs in, exposing the problems and explaining what the contractor did wrong, or neglected to do. (Occasionally he'll point out things the contractor did right, though at best it's an exercise in damning with faint praise!) He often finds things that the contractors missed because they applied a band-aid rather than exploring to expose the root problem. It's not unusual for him to strip things down to the studs, or tear off a roof, or dig a big hole in the yard, before he can start putting things back together again. "Close enough" is simply not in his vocabulary. He doesn't gold-plate things, but he...

Excellent Book for Renovations using a Remodeler
I am a real estate agent and part time handyman. The book is good on selecting & managing a remodeler, but less usefull if you are a do-it-your selfer or a handyman. I would like more enough information that I could duplicate some of the jobs which Mike does on his Holmes on Homes show. Such information would include product names, where to purchase, special tools required, tear out/install details which are particular to insure Holmes quality. Went to his website and suspect that some of this was there, but it was not found easily.Nevertheless, the book is excellent for what it does. The most important aspect of te book is Holmes recommendaton to never pay the whole amount before the job is finished. I recommend that you pay enough to cover the builder/remodeler's costs as they are incured and withold the profit (estimate to be 20-30%) till the end. If the job is big, I would have the work inspected by an inspector who adhears to the Holmes inspection...

Customer Review

Considering Buying or Selling a Home? Read this FIRST!
I preface my review by saying several months ago American HGTV began carrying Mike Holmes rebroadcasted Canadian HGTV show "Make it Right". Mr. Holmes is an experienced & honest Canadian Contractor who selects one from homeowners pleas, who have hired contractors for a renovation or purchased a new home and find they have real problems that are supposedly unsolvable. Each chosen one has Mike come for a "house call" to assess the situation. Homeowners have sunk huge sums of money into their home, only to find 1) the contractor walks leaving job unfinished and/or 2) the new home construction has hidden below-code problems, 3) not just shoddy work, but dangerous electrical, plumbing, structural issues abound 4) plus a whole lot more. Then he & his crew "Make it Right" by filming the project as they go along, showing the shoddy work & repairing it correctly. His theme is BEFORE you embark on a renovation or purchase a home (or plan to sell), educate yourself thoroughly and...

Let me understand my inspector's language
I bought this book already a week into escrow and just crammed through it. I used Mike's advice on picking the inspector and then tried to finish the book before the inspection...made it, with an hour to spare. It's well laid out in sections. Plenty of color pictures.During the inspection, what I learned from Mike helped me believe the inspector when he said, "this is good" or "this is bad" and I was able to ask more questions. I found I was able to finish some of his sentences when I knew he was about to say something Mike had explained in his book.I found myself scanning for things on the walls, floors and ceilings, under the sinks, around the foundation, the decks, etc... The more I looked, the more I remembered what to look for, and I could actually do that.I think most people also lean heavily on what we believe are professionals in something. As such, we don't ask as many questions as we should out of shyness. Reading this book...

This is Really a 4.5 Star Rating
I can't quite give this a 5 Star rating. As a fan of Mr. Holmes and his commitment to excellence and "completely finishing the job", there are a couple of minor items bring it off of the 5 star rating. But if you are looking for an Excellent home inspection book, this is it. BUY THIS BOOK.First, I am not a home inspector, but I have purchased many homes. Here are all the positives of this book: The book is well indexed. The paper quality is excellent (almost card stock). The pictures are excellent. I like the binder style of the book, as opposed to back bound. There is a "Case Studies" section in the book which brings out more of Mr. Holmes' personality and commitment to excellence. The "Checklist" section in the back of the book, summarizes the points of the book which have been covered prior to this section. Finally, the book is written in a "bullet-point" type context, and many of the sections are just that, bullet-points. I can't find an aspect of home inspection...

The various home rehab TV programs, with the possible exception of Holmes on Homes, make house construction and renovation seem easy, it is not. Building a green prefab has been my dream for many years, and now that I am finally ready to purchase my very first home that little voice inside my head keeps nagging me about it. When green prefab news first started popping up in the design... I would suggest you do a ton of research before plunging into building any home or even buying one that you want to renovate. As I started snooping around, to my surprise, it seemed like the cost of building my dream home was less than the craptastic fixer-uppers I had been considering. One day, as I needed a break from my traditional search, I searched for green prefab home builders in Seattle. I think that being a first-timer the idea of building a home, even if it's not in the traditional way, just scares me to the point that I'm afraid to take the leap. A recent NY Times article chronicled a near disaster experienced by a family building an LV home in upstate New York: http://www. Jump to a few years later and I am finally ready to begin looking for my first home. A number of jurisdictions have prohibitions or regulations that make prefab home construction difficult or impossible. If you can, visit models of the homes you like and make sure you will be comfortable living in them. Look as 87 homes from 5 different builders.

I am very satisfied with this holmes on homes: season 2 and I would certainly counsel it. Thank you so tons for the holmes on homes: season 2. This is a well made pleasant holmes on homes: season 2. i Had to order seasons 3 and 4 off the Holmes on Homes website.
