The Most Amazing Song Ever
I woke up on the eve of the opening of the Olympics to hear Ms. Lang perform this song. It moved me to tears. I couldn't get it out of my mind. You have to hear this song and especially HER version. It is beautiful beyond words.

Beautiful song, but.....
Well, obviously, I love this song. The lyrics are clever and the music is exquisite. But....here's the thing....I love to sing along to my music as I'm driving around town, and the lyrics - clever though they are - are a bit risque. I mean, I'm not a prude, but its gotta be nasty to see an old grandma-type woman driving around singing about sex at the top of her lungs. Right? Oh, well. Not my problem. I still sing.Oh....and K.D. Lang does this song total justice.

KD Lang Has The Purest And Most Pristine Voice In Music !
" Recollection" is an impeccably perfect collection of KD Lang songs that brilliantly showcases her boundless vocal range, eclecticism and enrapturing splendor. She can master country, ballads, torch, jazz and light rock. Her vocals can be tender, upbeat, sad, inspiring, enthralling and invariably awesome. "Trail Of Broken Hearts" is a melancholic marvel. "Constant Craving" resonates with yearning and will always be a hit. KD's dynamic rendition of "The Air That I Breathe" is majestic. She transforms Neil Young's "Helpless" into a song that is equally poignant and assuaging."You're OK" is another compelling vocal performance that literally sends pleasurable audio sensations to your psyche and soul. "In The Valley" is incredibly emotive and heavenly to listen to. "Crying" with Ray Orbison is one of the most tremendous songs in music history. Last but not least is her peerless rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" which is beyond amazing. Each track on this CD is...

Superb material, excellent remastering... can we have a COMPLETE boxed set now, please?
From 1987's "Angel With A Lariat," k.d. lang's first American debut up to this very day when I just finished watching her singing "Hallelujah" at the XXI Olympic Opening Ceremony, I find myself (as you will be asking about your own personal favorites), where is "Pullin' Back The Reins" from "Absolute Torch And Twang?" Where is "Lock, Stock and Teardrops," along with several other classics from "Shadowland?" The gorgeous "Still Thrives This Love" and "Save Me," from "Ingenue" are nowhere to be found, as the astonishingly beautiful "Infinite and Unforeseen" and "If I Were You," from "All You Can Eat" are sorely missing. Instead of the admittedly more dramatic "Theme From Valley of the Dolls" and "Till The Heart Caves In" from "Drag," we get "Smoke Rings," and "The Air That I Breathe," the latter which proves that when Miss lang covers a song as in Dionne Warwick's "Theme From Valley of the Dolls" or the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," both definitive versions, she makes them her very...

Product Description

k.d. lang is a once-in-a-generation artist who has consistently displayed an extraordinary interpretative range as well as remarkable vocal prowess. It's no wonder she has, over the course of more than two decades, attracted such collaborators as Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett, along with admirers like Philip Glass and Madonna. As lang has matured, she continues to surprise and impress. With the 2008 release of her self-penned, self-produced Nonesuch disc Watershed, Rolling Stone declared, "k.d. lang does what the gifted and the lucky always should: improve as time passes." The Times of London agreed: "It's a quirk of the music industry that one of the sexiest, most sensual voices in all of pop music comes not from some raven-tressed siren in a glitter-dress but a middle-aged woman with a utility haircut and a penchant for male tailoring." lang herself called the album "a culmination of everything I've done -- there's a little bit of jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingénue sound, a little Brazilian touch."

This two-disc retrospective -- which includes favorites like "Constant Craving" and "Smoke Rings," as well as ten tracks that never appeared on k.d. lang albums; and interpretations of classic songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" -- illustrates how lang got to this significant point in her career, 25 years after the independent release of her debut, A Truly Western Experience. As lang moved from the subversively whimsical cow-punk sound of her early career in Western Canada to a broader pop palette, she has shown an ever-increasing sophistication, both as songwriter and interpreter. Dramatic, country-meets-lounge opener "Trail of Broken Hearts," from her 1989 Grammy Award-winning Absolute Torch and Twang album, encapsulates where she came from and where she was heading. The luxurious adult pop of "Constant Craving," from the platinum-selling 1992 Ingenue, garnered her a Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Grammy and remains her best known and most successful single. The effervescent "Miss Chatelaine," also from Ingenue, remains a concert favorite and "I Dream of Spring," is a particularly lush example of what she so artfully created for the acclaimed Watershed.

Her bravura rendition of "Crying," originally cut with Orbison for the soundtrack to the movie Hiding Out, has become a showstopper in her live performances, perhaps rivaled only be her beautifully restrained version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." This soaring signature tune appears here as both a new recording, and in its original studio version. On her 2004 Nonesuch debut, Hymns of the 49th Parallel, she explored the work of her fellow Canadian songwriters, including Neil Young ("Helpless") and the woefully underrated Jane Siberry (the sublime "The Valley"). Regardless of its source, her choice of cover material has always been inspired, as evidenced by her take on the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," the Beatles' Golden Slumbers," and Chris Isaak's "Western Stars," produced by Nashville legend Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's mentor, for Shadowlands. lang is equally adept with such standards as Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "So In Love," and the jazz classic Moonglow" (performed here with Tony Bennett), and that has endeared her to a multi-generational audience. 50 Minutes Per CD ... Are You Kidding Me?
From a purely musical standpoint, this is a superb collection. My problem -- and it's a BIG one -- is that each CD is only about 50 minutes in length. That leaves about 40 minutes of empty space on this 2-CD collection. k.d. has been making records for 25 years, and I've been a fan almost that whole time. I can't believe the record company was so stingy with its music. There's no excuse in this day and age to release such as skimpy anthology. Sorry, k.d. Love you, but not your record company's treatment of your fans.

Even Leonard Cohen must have given her a standing O
"Hallelujah" has to be one of the most covered songs in recent pop history, and I swear I've heard it in every genre except, possibly, heavy metal or rap. This live presentation by Ms. lang is almost typical, using a slow, regular tempo and relying upon a simple orchestration.(When American television developed a fad for ending dramatic shows with at least a portion of some pop song this and Green Day's "Time of My Life" (sorry if that's the wrong title) were particularly used a lot and also entered the vernacular via American Idol - I own at least three versions of each already.<g>))What makes lang's "Hallelujah" absolutely stellar, however, are at least three things: 1) (L)ang's voice has the range and power to present the song clearly and fully, with clear enunciation and perfect pitch. 2) Her precise, emotive singing will make you listen and respond to the lyrics better than ever before. 3) It premiered during one of the most...

What could be more Canadian (or more uplifting)?
Okay, it's true that this song has been played to death (in Canada anyway) but it really is so damn good and what could be more Canadian than K.D. Lang singing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah? It is a truly great and uplifting song and K.D. Lang does a great job with it (my favorite recording by her since Ingenue).

An excellent work by Lang
Over the years I have found a certain special connection with particular k. d. Lang recordings. "Ingénue" and "Drag" in particular come to mind. They are works made up of carefully selected songs that make up a greater whole. For me "Hymns of the 49th Parallel" falls into the same category. It is a stunning work from beginning to end.Jane Siberry's "The Valley" is probably my personal favorite. While Siberry's own recording is amazing, Lang's big-boned-gal voice gives "The Valley" an additional anthem-like boost. The chorus haunts me daily as I walk through the office halls or get into my car. It is moving and powerful.Lang's take on Joni Mitchell's two classics, "A Case of You" and "Jericho", are also exceptional. The choice of "A Case of You" in particular was appropriate. Mitchell's song about her birthplace of Canada fits beautifully into Lang's collection of songs by Canadian artists. "Jericho", my personal favorite from "Don Juan's Reckless...

ethereal and longing
The beauty of this album is it's sparseness. I can not convey enough how risky and brilliant this is. From obscure tracks like Fallen to the more familiar (Case of You, Hallelujah) she studies the song and plants her thumb firmly on the core. And not in a "studied" way, but in a literate, passionate, loving way. To say she takes Case of You to astral heights is not granting it full due. I have never heard a Joni Mitchell cover taken so gently in one's hands, yet experienced so fully. Her voice was made for songs such as these. And I can not serve Love is Everything properly, you simply must hear it's melancholic words and her treatment to know what that heartbreak feels like. This album touches me in ways, subtle, longing, and sweet that few albums have. And k.d. deserves much credit for challenging herself and her audience with such art.

Product Description

Hymns of the 49th Parallel fulfills k.d. lang’s longstanding desire to create a Canadian songbook. On the album, her first for Nonesuch Records, she pays homage to fellow Canadian artists including Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Jane Siberry, Ron Sexsmith, and Bruce Cockburn. Top to learn more

Was it homesickness that compelled longtime Los Angeles resident k.d. lang to fashion her one-woman campaign for north-of-the-border nationalism, or just plain good sense? All Canadian content has long been a mainstay of the Canadian Broadcasting System, but few have selected their material with such a fine hand and a high aesthetic. The expatriate singer has taken great pains to create a sophisticated homage to her Canadian roots, elegantly reinterpreting 11 songs penned by some of her more illustrious countrymen (and women) such as Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. The idiosyncratic chanteuse turns Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" into an aching monochromatic lament, exploring new tributaries of pain that didn't exist in the original, while recasting Neil Young's "Helpless" into a haunting anthem of memory and comfort, all the while sounding anything but helpless. A gorgeous love letter to her brethren, complete with an intelligent and understated orchestration. --Jaan Uhelszki Top to learn more

A compelling voice paying quiet tribute to her culture
The first rule of reviewing is, you have to let something be what it wants to be. With that said, k.d. lang has released a career milestone with Hymns Of The 49th Parallel. After touring with Tony Bennett doing Louis Armstrong-based covers from an American songbook, k.d.'s idea was to get in touch with her Canadian roots by covering songs from Canadian songwirters. The result is an intimate and warm record perfect for quiet reflection. Like the citizens of that country, the music is powerful but extremely understated, incisive and brilliant. From Neil Young to Leonard Cohen to Joni Mitchell to the vastly-underrated Jane Siberry, lang's voice provides a soothing glimpse into the stillness of the Great North. There have been two major complaints: 1) "This CD is boring," and 2) "Why did she cover THIS song? She should have covered this one!" This is a very mellow, muted disc, designed to be a gentle acoustic recording...

Gorgeous, emotional renditions of Hallelujah
My husband thought I had lost my mind paying money for three versions of the same song by the same artist. Especially an artist neither of us normally listens to very often. However, k.d. Lang has taken an already amazing song and turned it into her own astonishing creation of beauty, feeling from all ends of the spectrum, and surprising vocal ranges. Each version is slightly different and each is utterly compelling.

On my list would be KD Lang's Hallelujah and The Laws do the most sensuous version of Dance Me to the End of Love. His first album was a cult success and many other artists recorded songs from it. This is one of the songs from that album, Sisters of Mercy Wonderful. It’s interesting to me that I find that the best interpreters of Leonard Cohen’s songs are mostly female. I've always been a fan of Leonard Cohen (not sure about calling him Lennie :). I hadn't heard some of the interpretations you included - they're great. LEONARD COHEN is a Canadian poet and author who turned to songwriting and singing, and both these endeavours made him a lot more famous than the previous ones.

(a simple A-line dress with heels and a wig) She asked me how I felt about makeup and I said it's fun sometimes and she said "It is fun to get dressed up sometimes, but I would hate to have to wear the amount of makeup you're wearing right now". The second is that the person is transsexual, there is every level of self acceptance from the 2 year old who just knows to the 70 year old who has repress all their life. All emails asking these questions are NOT going to be answered nor will I create another email account just to answer those questions. the way she put it was, "I'm a natural born woman and I wouldn't want to wear what you're wearing right now". Obviously for adults once a realization is achieved the question becomes what do I do about it. I don't know what I knew when I was 5 I just knew I liked wearin my sisters clothes. I knew who I was for almost all of my life, I never crossdressed, because the few tries early in my adult life were devastating, and never said a word to anyone about my self. Would members/non-members please STOP using the contact us form to ask why their email address has been banned. There is a link in the contact us form that says 'banned email addresses' which you are supposed to check BEFORE contacting the Administrator. When I was old enough to get it I knew I was "wrong" fro wanting to wear my sisters clothes. I say decision to transition NOT a decision to be transsexual.
