A great reference - but not for beginners!
This classic book has recently emerged from the land of the out-of-print books in a new edition, and I bought one as soon as I found out it was available. As an experienced homebrewer, I found it fascinating and informative. Noonan gets down to the hardcore chemical and technical foundations of brewing. And if you are interested in decoction mashing, Noonan provides what is probably the best description of the process that is available in print. This book is perfect for the professional brewer or advanced all-grain homebrewer. However, the sheer volume of detail would bore a newcomer to brewing, or worse yet, scare him or her off. The beginner simply doesn't need this much highly-technical information. However, after that beginner gets a few batches under his belt, this book would be a good addition to his or her brewing library.

Required reading for all-grain efforts, lager or ale.
Noonan's text is simply superb. It is well organized, extremely detailed, and concise. This is a book about how and why you use each part of the brewing process. Noonan champions and explains the decoction mash, and even explains how to figure out if the malt you're using needs a decoction or an infusion mash. Appendices address both the infusion mash and the step mash, concisely, yet in detail. The first third of the book, dedicated to ingredients, is alone worth the price. The detail on malt, brewing water, and yeast instantly imparts a greater understanding of and appreciation for the brewing process.Read this book and begin to make informed decisions about your ingredients and the processes you use to brew beer from them.

Product Description

This book offers a thorough yet practical education on the theory and techniques required to produce high-quality beers using all-grain methods either at home or in a small commercial brewery. Top to learn more

Excellent Reference
This book is required reading for any serious brewer. After reading it, you will know how to choose your ingredients, the correct process for your ingredients and the proper equipment to make high quality beers. There is a lot of good advice for setting up your brewery (at home or otherwise) and the general guidelines for getting the most out of your brews. Even though I have been an all-grain brewer for some time, I find that I still go back to Noonan's book for practical information rather frequently. The only downside to this book is that the theoretical sections can be rather confusing. I am an engineer by education and I had a difficult time of understanding the enzyme reactions that occur in a mash or way hop resins combine with ions in the wort. A good deal of this in-depth theory made this book read like a college text, instead of like a book for the hobbyist.Still, once you can distinguish the practical aspects from the theoretical information, this book...

Do you like german beer?
Do you like german beer? If you do, get this book. This is the recipe key for that famous blond beer served in Bavaria. If you like the red beer, then get the book on octoberfest beer (marzen). This book will help you formulate a tasty, balanced, perfectly malty brew that is delightful. Fifty percent of my brews are helles beers, and once you get them right, I think yours may be too. For the most authentic taste, I recommend incorporating decoction mashing. This subject is not covered in this text, but is in a book titled: NEW BREWING LAGER BEER.Don't forget to drink to the foam (safely) and dance to merry music with a partner! Have fun. Auf Wiedersehen.

My favorite book in this series.
The various books in the Classic Beer Style series are as mixed of a bag as their subjects. While each makes an effort to provide a bit of a history lesson, some technical background and a few recipes for the homebrewer, each author seems to have been pretty much left to work out the details. As a result, some examples got lost by being muddled with too much history, too many technical details or recipes that are at the extremes of the complexity scale. Dornbusch managed to get a great balance of the three in this book, and he presents it in a style that shows that he downright enjoys his subject. The result is a book that, from a homebrewer's standpoint, is actually fun to read. But most importantly, you can make some pretty good brews from his recipes.

Helles
Having spent many nights in the Spaten and Augustiner beer halls this is a good book which reviews the style well. As I type this, the malt is undergoing the "acid rest", as I am Brewing the first recipe today. This is another good book from this series and useful source of information for the collection. I did have to order direct form the USA as it doen't appear to be available in the UK.

One of the classic texts - for all-grain brewers
Most homebrewers seem to brew ales, or at least start out by brewing ales. While the title of this book includes the word lager and not ale, the techniques and theories are applicable to both style classes. High on science low on recipes; buy it if you want to understand more about mashing and the steps surrounding the mash .

Great
One of the best comprehensive books on home brewing. This book is not for the lay person interested in starting brewing. I would recommend it to someone who has brewed for awhile or is just starting to brew with whole grains. This is written on a technical level with a lot of science behind the brewing process. It is well written and if you want to explore home brewing in greater depth, then this is the book.

Customer Review

very good
I was very happy with the way this turned out. It is very similar to traditional American beers(Bud/Coors) but with an extra kick. The flavor is very smooth, has a creamy head and ends with a slight bitternes. This is a great beer to start with for new brewers and veterans alike. If you are to anxious to wait for it to age, you can drink it after 2 weeks. It will taste good, but get better with age. Make sure to put it in the fridge after it carbonates. Lager ages and taste best when in colder conditions.

Great Brew -- Will Try Again
I brewed this kit first as it was the one that came with the brewery kit. I followed the instructions exactly. NOTE: If you don't follow the instructions exactly you are opening up opportunity for problems. I brewed for about 7 days. I then bottled and let condition for 2 weeks at room temperature. I then put the beer in the fridge. I tried two bottles the next day. The taste was OK, but it was very flat. I then put more bottles in the fridge and let them sit for 2 weeks. I tried one of these after the two weeks and it was great. The carbonation was perfect and the taste improved even more. Definitely give the beer time to condition. You will be glad you did.

Product Description

Straw Color with golden hues and a lacy white head. Light floral aromas follow through on a light to medium bodied palate with subtle malt and hop flavors and a clean finish. An Australian Lager style with plenty of character. Top to learn more

Nice starter kit
makes a nice lager that's quite a bit heavier than the domestic lager beers. I don't plan on making any more, but has more to do with my love of dark ales than the quality/flavor of this kit.

Eventually, Scotty and his lager won and the monster was reduced to nothing more than a melted puddle of fermented alcohol infused goo upon the floor. d returned, arms filled with bottles of lager he&rsquo. He looked around triumphantly, expecting to be praised, yet he was faced by a sea of faces liberally covered with spots of curry sauce and rice. Leonard sniffed and almost gagged upon the smell - it reminded him suddenly of the dubious aromas of Scotty&rsquo. The captain had to agree with Leonard that the curry both looked and smelled equally vile. Leonard looked nearly as apoplectic as the curry monster previously had. Suddenly, the being roared, dripping hot splashes of spicy sauce and rice upon the ground as it lunged blindly towards the doctor.
