Solving an Ecological Whodunit
It is, according to entomologist Jeffrey A. Lockwood, "perhaps the greatest ecological mystery of modern times." Lockwood has studied the mystery for years, undergone grueling mountain expeditions to get evidence, compiled a solution to it, and had his solution accepted by his peers; it might be, therefore, that he has a slightly exalted sense of just how great the mystery is. But in _Locust: The Devastating Rise and Mysterious Disappearance of the Insect that Shaped the American Frontier_ (Basic Books), he has set the matter clearly for non-specialists, and has shown how he made his convincing answer to "What killed off the locusts?" You may never have wondered about this particular ecological question, but Lockwood's detailed, multi-faceted, and fascinating book provides a refreshing look at entomological and agricultural history, at how field and research science is done, and how evolution works in mysterious ways. The impression the locusts made on pioneers in the...

Product Description

In 1876, the U.S. Congress declared the locust “the single greatest impediment to the settlement of the country between Mississippi and the Rocky Mountains.” Throughout the nineteenth century, swarms of locusts regularly swept across the American continent, turning noon into dusk, devastating farm communities, and bringing trains to a halt. The outbreaks subsided in the 1890s, and then, suddenly—and mysteriously—the Rocky Mountain locust vanished. A century later, entomologist Jeffrey Lockwood vowed to discover why.Locust is the story of how one insect shaped the history of the western United States. A compelling personal narrative drawing on historical accounts and modern science, this beautifully written book brings to life the cultural, economic, and political forces at work in America in the late nineteenth century, even as it solves one of the greatest extinction mysteries of our time.

Imagine looking up to see an ominous black cloud on the horizon. Now imagine your growing horror as you watch that cloud reveal itself as an immense, miles-wide swarm of ravenous insects. In Locust, entomologist Jeffrey A. Lockwood reveals the bizarre history of a bug responsible for killing countless settlers on the American plains. First-hand accounts of the Rocky Mountain locust's horrific depredations are reproduced in the book, and Lockwood adds his own vivid reconstructions:

We expect grasshoppers and locusts to consume our gardens and fields, but when these insects begin to feed on fabric and flesh something seems demonically amiss.... Although the settlers may have been astonished by the locusts' voracity, they were appalled by the insects' fierce cannibalism.

Swarms of locusts would touch down like tornadoes on homesteads and farms, stripping away every growing thing and desperately eating other insects in search of much-needed fat and protein. These hordes were thought by many, including the Mormon settlers in Utah, to be divine punishments, or at least signs from above. After describing the effects this insect had on the American frontier, Lockwood delves into the entomologic mystery of the locusts' abrupt disappearance. Had they become extinct? Or gone into hiding in some ecological refuge? When Lockwood abandons history for science, his glee for his subject keeps the book moving, albeit slower than in the first few chapters. --Therese Littleton Top to learn more

Mystery solved
This is an interesting tale about the apparent extinction of the Rocky Mountain Locust, which so devastated the farms of the early settlers of the American West.Lockwood begins his tale with a rather exhausting recitation of the first hand accounts of the Locust swarms, and the impact they had on the pioneers. This was, we quickly learn, horrifying and almost unbelievable to modern ears. The helplessness and despair, starvation and economic ruin! Lockwood's account is to this reader, at least, could have been a little shorter--I got to the "enough awready" stage pretty soon. But it does set the stage for the question (which I had wondered about myself): what happened to them? Why haven't they recurred over the last century? Might they come back?Lockwood, as a young professional entomologist, was unhappy with previous explanations and decided to try to answer this question with as much certainty as he could, using real data and a little less speculation...

A Fun Insect Whodunit
Before I read this book, I had heard of the great locust swarms of the 19th century, mostly from reading Laura Ingalls Wilder. I had not realized that swarms of the Rocky Mountain locust no longer flew and that the insect was now believed to be extinct. This book has great stories on the experiences of the victims of locust swarms. The second half takes up the question of why the locusts are gone. It's a good example of a scientist's life and how progress gets made in science. Much of the research was done by taking insect samples from melting glaciers. (If you're not convinced yet that global warming is changing the climate, this is a good book for you.) The pace of the book drags in spots, but overall it is a fascinating tale.

SHADES OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS! THIS MOVIE ROCKS!
I saw this movie in a Store and it looked interesting and I liked the actors in it so I figured I would give it a Shot! Boy, was I BLOWN AWAY! Why havent I heard about this movie before? This Movie was EXCELLENT! It amazes me that some of the reviewers here didnt like it! The Story definatley has the same feel as a Tennessee Williams Story. It it hard to talk about the plot without giving too much away but I will say that the movie deals with the bond between two men who form an unlikely friendship! The way their friendship progresses in this film is so paced perfectly! The one man is trying to escape his past and in the meantime is trying to help his much weaker friend escape his present! The film deals with Deep Dark and Ugly Family Secrets(Very Ugly Secrets) and I will admit that this is No Feel Good movie! But, if you love great character driven dramas with an edge, this film is for you! I LOVED IT!

Southern Goth at its best
Stellar acting from a great ensemble and a plot that could have been written by Flannery O'Connor, Truman Capote and Erskine Caldwell during an all night drinking session. Only disappointment was the last 30 seconds of the film -- a Hollywood ending to a Southern Goth only leaves one wanting more.

Nightmare America
Largely unknown during his brief lifetime, Nathanael West is now regarded as one of the finest authors of the 1930s--a writer whose slashing satires of American decay are so dead-on accurate that they are often painful to read. This is particularly true of his two best works, MISS LONELYHEARTS and THE DAY OF THE LOCUST. Both novels are short and intense, and both present horrific visions of American society choking to death on its own mass-media fantasies.Probably West's most powerful work, MISS LONELYHEARTS concerns a nameless man assigned to produce a newspaper advice column--but as time passes he begins to break under the endless misery of those who write to him for advice. Unable to find answers, and with his shaky Christianity ridiculed into destruction by his poisonous editor, he tumbles into a madness fueled by his own spiritual emptiness. First published in 1933, MISS LONELYHEARTS remains one of the most shocking works of 20th Century American literature, as unnerving...

Two nearly perfect short novels
Just before his tragically young death, Nathanael West wrote a friend that he was confident his best work was in front of him. The genius and brilliance of these two remarkable short novels make that prospect seem unspeakably tragic. As it is, these two works have been sufficient to cement Wests reputation as one of Americas great literary talents of the 1930s. MISS LONELYHEARTS is perhaps the more highly acclaimed of the two, though many find THE DAY OF THE LOCUST perhaps even more entertaining. Either way, this volume contains two of the most remarkable short novels in American literary history.Nathanael West was an exceptionally dense writer, in that his pages contain no wasted words, no needless characters, and no pointless characters. Every sentence, every word, every comma plays an essential role in his work. Both works are distilled to their most concentrated form. As a result, although they are highly readable and brief, they contain far more content than even much...

"A primer for Big Bad City disillusionment, unsparing in its portrayal of New York's debilitating entropy."—The Village Voice. With a new introduction by Jonathan Lethem.

First published in 1933, Miss Lonelyhearts remains one of the most shocking works of 20th century American literature, as unnerving as a glob of black bile vomited up at a church social: empty, blasphemous, and horrific. Set in New York during the Depression and probably West's most powerful work, Miss Lonelyhearts concerns a nameless man assigned to produce a newspaper advice column — but as time passes he begins to break under the endless misery of those who write in, begging him for advice. Unable to find answers, and with his shaky Christianity ridiculed to razor-edged shards by his poisonous editor, he tumbles into alcoholism and a madness fueled by his own spiritual emptiness.

During his years in Hollywood West wrote The Day of the Locust, a study of the fragility of illusion. Many critics consider it with F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished masterpiece The Last Tycoon (1941) among the best novels written about Hollywood. Set in Hollywood during the Depression, the narrator, Tod Hackett, comes to California in the hope of a career as a painter for movie backdrops but soon joins the disenchanted second-rate actors, technicians, laborers and other characters living on the fringes of the movie industry. Tod tries to seduce Faye Greener; she is seventeen. Her protector is an old man named Homer Simpson. Tod finds work on a film called prophetically “The Burning of Los Angeles,” and the dark comic tale ends in an apocalyptic mob riot outside a Hollywood premiere, as the system runs out of control. "Few things are sadder than the truly monstrous"
Nathanael West had a brief, barely noticed career before his sudden death in 1940. These two novellas, MISS LONELYHEARTS and THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, stand as his best-known contributions to literature, classics that are now widely taught in American high schools and universities. MISS LONELYHEARTS is the more bitter of the two: a newspaper columnist (a man, but always referred to as Miss Lonelyhearts) suffers a crisis of conscience and spirit under the emotional weight of the mail he receives. His colleagues make fun of the correspondents, who are mostly women, but Miss Lonelyhearts sees the pathetic futility in their seeking help to escape their bleak lives. His editor, Shrike, tries to energize Miss Lonelyhearts with long-winded diatribes satirizing religious beliefs, but their shrillness pushes Miss Lonelyhearts toward the edge. Using Christian imagery as well as irony, West evokes a world of alienation, futility, and human failings.THE DAY OF THE LOCUST comes across as...

Pleasantly surprised
Given the price and the lack of reviews, I didn't expect much out of this book. But I was pleasantly surprised. I am older than a teenager but it really kept my interest. The premise was creative and the story moved along nicely and had some interesting twists and turns. The ending was a little frustrating because it didn't wrap things up very well. It's plainly clear that there is a sequel. But I liked the book enough that I bought the sequel as soon as I finished it. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next!

A fun read
This is a good book about a special school of kids. The school is in Area 51! The story is well written, funny, and really grabs you. I almost finished the book in one-sitting and I am eagerly waiting for the sequel. If you like stories about aliens, flying spaceships, children growing up, Area 51, and the importance of family, you'll love this book. I would definitely recommend this book to people who like sci-fi, you won't be disappointed.

Product Description

Buried deep below the Nevada desert, in a place often called Area 51, is a very special and ancient school where the best and brightest children come to learn the technology that will bring mankind to its next step of evolution -- a place amongst the stars. 'The Fourth World' follows four children through their entry into this school: 'Fintan Reilly' is a young, often bullied Irish boy who has a big destiny; Zach Adams, from Fresno, is his diametric opposite, and instant best friend; Ayako Katsuragi is a brilliant Japanese girl, a military brat who is as capable as she is smart and Nizhoni Benally is a Navajo from New Mexico, who is as tough as she is beautiful, and who somehow shares a secret past with Fintan. The book follows their first year in their new school, with an Alien as headmaster, and where they learn everything from Cosmic History through to how to fly a flying saucer, and comes to a shocking conclusion in a field trip to Mars where ancient secrets are uncovered. A first
I have never written a review before but after reading this book and realizing that there were only 2 reviews, I felt that I needed to. This book was suprising. I bought it only because it was free and I figured that I had nothing to lose. I really enjoyed this book and even bought the second one right after finishing it. The story was great and it kept me entertained throughout the book. It kind of reminded me of Harry Potter in a way but instead of wizards there were aliens. There were a few problems in the book, spelling mistakes and that sort of thing. Other than that I would recommend trying this book out.

MEGA Bloks: Halo Covenant Locust vs. Gauss Hog
Like many other lego fans, I was skeptical with my purchase of a MEGA Bloks set do to their apparent quality difference. However, upon purchasing and constructing this set, I was immensely pleased with my purchase. At 385 pieces for $40, you are getting just about the right price-to-parts price point, 10 cents per piece, unlike lego and its every increasing prices. As for the set, the ships went together with ease for anyone who knows how to build these sets. The instructions were extremely clear and allowed for easy building. My 7 year old brother built the Gauss Warthog with hardly any difficulty, and is enjoying his creation at this moment. The ships are durable and fun. However, application of the smaller stickers can be a bit agitating trying to line it up straight. The figures are great and go great with their respective vehicles and look amazing! The guns quality is great as well. The Locust was a fun build for even myself after building countless lego sets. Constructing the...

Fun to build but with challenges
My 7 year old son loves anything Legos + Army, so when I saw this Halo set on sale for half price at Kohl's I bought it for him. He is VERY good at building Legos but this set had him completely frustrated so I had to step in to help. I could see the pieces were a bit warped and did not sit flush against other pieces causing any other previously constructed sections to come apart. I got out my husband's rubber mallet - yes, rubber mallet - and tapped each piece into place as we built it so that all pieces were flush. It worked out great and when we were done the Warthog stuck together like a charm. He plays with it and loves it.

I got this for my nephew. He is a HUGE Halo fan - plays everyday. He is 12. He LOVES these Halo sets! He loves putting them together, and then he plays with them. I was concerned that he might not like them because they're not LEGO. But, I was wrong. He doesn't mind. They are good quality, just like LEGO. My nephew tells me that they are "Awesome" and "Look exactly like the machines on the game!" He's very excited about them! Score for Aunt Margie!

Heat should be provided by way of a heat lamp – bearded dragons do not absorb heat from below, and indeed, cannot feel it. Heat rocks and heat mats can easily burn them so should not be used. If you are tempted to buy a baby bearded dragon here is some advice to help you to raise a bearded dragon properly. It’s therefore a false economy to buy a smaller vivarium with the intention to upgrade as it grows bigger, and it’s best to buy the larger size first. The vivarium needs to have a basking spot under a heat lamp which reaches a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and the other end ‘the cool end’ of the vivarium should be no more than 85 degrees. At night they should be able to experience a good temperature drop, so the heating should be turned off as long as the ambient temperature does not fall below 65 degrees for babies, and 60 degrees for adults.
