Pat Pattison has produced what is the ultimate book on lyric writing. Actually, Pattison's exercises and techniques are valuable for any aspect of creative writing, from poetry to fiction.He begins the book with the staple of his teaching, "Object Writing". Object writing is defined as writing on a specific thing - it can be anything from polyester to holding your breath - while incorporating as many senses as you can: touch, taste, smell, etc. The exercises last for 10 minutes, exactly, and you do it every day. He likens this to a pearl diver holding his breath and diving for pearls. Each time you hold your breath a little longer, dive a little deeper. It's the same with object writing. At first your writing will be awkward and fragmented - and that's okay. But as you do it on and on, eventually you will hit that vein, that underground river where your creativity rolls free and the words will pour out. As you continue it day to day, you'll hit this river more and more frequently...

This is THE book for lyric writing
Lyric writing is doubtless the hardest aspect of songwriting (for most of us anyhow.) Believe me though when I say that this book is better than any other for helping you clear this most challenging hurdle.I took two lyric writing courses with Pat at Berklee Coll. of Music and although I don't recall that this book was required, I bought it anyway. Pat is just too insightful not to have his ideas and suggestions spined out on my bookshelf.First, he covers a technique called object writing. Without giving away too much, it is a brainstorming technique which shows us how to dig deeper into ours senses. This not only helps us write more powerful lyrics, but strengthens our imagination, insuring that fresh ideas abound. It is no exageration to say that this alone is worth the book's price many times over.From here, he goes into methods of charting a lyric. This book is almost funny, with how much lyrical content it holds.
Rikky Rooksby has made some really great songwriting books. His best being "How To Write Songs On Guitar."I flipped through this book at a local store and I was laughing to myself, at how much detail Rooksby goes into, as far as lyrical subjects are concerned.He doesn't really go into full detail about how to write great lines, or how to write a life-altering song lyrically (that comes with a lot of practice and being an intelligent, perceptive person I think), but he does include a lot of cliches you should avoid at all costs... cliche phrases and word couplings, etc. Surely you've heard them on your local soft rock radio station or top 40 station.The main strength of this book, I think, is that he gives you a TON of popular song examples that are about a specific thing.And by specific things I mean:Politics, Love, War, Loneliness, Anger, Frustration, Partying/Having Fun, History, stories/third person storytelling, Science...

New ideas right off the bat...
Althought I haven't yet finished the entire book, I found the first sections of this work so inspiring that I thought they merited comment. What may seem common knowledge (or common sense) to an experienced writer, the ideas that were revealed in the first few sections of this book were eye-openers to me. Peppered with comments and insights from successful writers, the section titled "30 ways to find inspiration" was all I hoped it would be....and all I needed to push my creativity to a place it hasn't been in quite some time. A simple, productive kick in the pants for a writer like me who didn't know which way to go next. In the two weeks since reading this section alone, I've filled at least a dozen pages with new prospects. When this surge is over, I'll see what the rest of the book has to offer!

A great resource!!
I started a songwriters club just over a year ago. We've all spent time acquiring good resources to read and share. We look for reference material that will not only help us with our individual work but will help us offer constructive ideas to each other on lyrics, construction, content, melody, theme, etc. This is one of the better books I've found on lyric writing. It gives a lot of approaches for stimulating songs along with examples of popular songs that used each approach. I find it is now a book I can pick up anytime, open to any page and within moments have a fresh idea. There seems to be a good balance of instructive narrative and helpful examples. What I like most is that it deals head on with my two biggest issues: inspiration and structure. It was definitely money well spent and truly delivers on the author's promise (a statement I'm unwilling to make about similar books). It is a keeper for my reference library. I fully intend to purchase other works by this author.

It is a wide and well chosen selection that gives lots of coverage to well-known lyricists like Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart,Oscar Hammerstein, and Stephen Sondheim. It also provides lyrics for a lot of other well-known songs by less well-known lyricists. If you like American popular music, you will probably finding yourself lost in this book, looking and finding your particular favorite songs and going off to listening to some great recordings of the songs from which the lyrics are taken. Excellent to have around when you can't remember the words!
I've conquered music reviews & the occasional movie one, but I had yet to try my hand at a book review. However, with this book, I just had to write about it & alert people to this great collection of some of the greatest words ever put to music in history. Some may wonder why certain songs from a certain lyricist are the only ones represented, but I imagine the lyrics that have best stood the test of time or are truly representative of the greatest of the person's repertoire are what's included. For a complete collection of lyrics, most likely a composer will have something of the sort published somewhere, but READING LYRICS is an excellent taster for those wanting to dive in.Most music lovers of my generation like to listen to music where lyrics take second place to rhythm or melody, with the volume of both enough to render such good words useless.
