Great Book!
My husband and I just visited Napa and Sonoma Counties, and our trip was special because we used Tilar Mazzeo's Back Lane Wineries of Napa and Back Lane Wineries of Sonoma. We visited wineries that are family run rather than corporate owned. We had some great wine and met fantastic people who love what they do. Remember, though, that if you make an appointment at a small winery and get a personal tour, you will feel compelled to buy a bottle or two at the very least. It is a personal experience, and you will often be talking with the person who made the wine that you are enjoying. Now, whenever my husband and I open one of the bottles, we remember the person who put their heart into the making of it. Buy the book, and get the Sonoma County version as well. Have a great trip.

Great book for wine lovers traveling to Napa, will save you from visiting only the usual suspects
Tilar Mazzeo's "Back lane wineries of Napa" is a great book for a specific audience: true wine lovers who are visiting Napa Valley, are not bothered by wines costing $30 a bottle or more, and who want to have individualized, hands-on engagement with small producers instead of the mass-producing wineries. If that description fits you, then it's a must buy -- finding a single great experience is well worth the cost of the book. The format of the book is 1-3 small-sized pages per winery, with a description of the winery's history, the winemakers and/or owners (most often the same), and the style of wines they produce. It describes what is unique to each winery: the location, the wine style, or the story behind it. Mazzeo also profiles a few of the wines and the price range for each winery, so you generally know what to expect ahead of time before making an appointment. It makes no pretense of being complete, and instead selects a few dozen interesting and unique places...

Some seventy-five discoveries are profiled here
Back Lane Wineries of Napa is a pick for any who would locate the wineries 'off the beaten path' in a California county well known for its winery paths. These are smaller venues offering world-class wines and tastings - but are much lesser-known than the larger chateaus. Some seventy-five discoveries are profiled here, with hours, tasting offerings, websites, locations, and history making them easy to plan for.

Product Description

Back Lane Wineries of Napa is a guide to wineries where you can find excellent handcrafted wines made by on-site proprietors, often with only local distribution and limited production, places where wine tasting gets down-to-earth—no one needs to show off how developed his or her palate is. These are often also where sustainable and organic viticulture is being pioneered. Above all, these are wines that are likely to be a new experience, and among the back-lane wineries of Napa, there are still discoveries to be made.

Tilar J. Mazzeo reveals a different side of the valley—a place that’s vibrant, young, and far more accessible and friendly than you might assume. In addition to the profiles of more than seventy wineries, there are Wine Tasting Essentials, Wine Shipping Services, an overview of the area, ideas about how to plan an itinerary, the etiquette of tasting, general prices, and much more practical information. There are also restaurant suggestions and local attractions that can be worked into an itinerary spontaneously. Top to learn more

Excellent Wine Country Tour Guide Selection
My husband and I are from the NY metro area. This August, we are joining friends--a couple from Europe--for a holiday in San Francisco. This European couple has travelled widely, but they have never been to the Bay Area before. To ensure their trip is as perfect as possible, I wanted to prepare for each segment of the vacation. To bone up on the Wine Country part of the itinerary, I browsed the titles available on tourism, wine tasting, and Napa and Sonoma Valleys. I selected this book based upon its title, its academic press, and its very recent publishing date. The book is wonderfully written, but what delighted me most was the discovery that Mr. Don Partier was the author's subject for the profile of the consummate Wine Country Tour Guide. Back in 2003, my husband treated me to my first tour of Napa and Sonoma. After months of research and due diligence on guides, he selected Mr. Don Partier. That day in April of 2003 was unforgettable. I've since been to vineyards and tours across...

Great insider view of Napa Valley tourism
As a Napa Valley resident (and former winery tour guide) for almost 40 years, I have witnessed firsthand the extraordinary growth of the wine industry. This comprehensive look at the entire cultural landscape here is one of the very few to offer an accurate picture of it. The authors have managed to provide a fascinating insider's take on the realities of Napa Valley life rather than the hype we residents deal with on a daily basis.

Product Description

While anthropologists often have been accused of failing to "study up," this book turns an anthropological lens on an elite activity – wine tasting. Five million people a year, from the US and abroad, travel to California's Napa Valley to experience the "good life": to taste fine wines, eat fine food, and immerse themselves in other sophisticated pleasures while surrounded by bucolic beauty.

Written in a highly readable style by anthropologists George and Sharon Gmelch, Tasting the Good Life examines who wine tourists are and what the "tasting" experience is all about. It also examines the growth of wine tourism in the valley and the impact it is having on the landscape and the lives of the people who live there. In addition to the authors' own analysis, they present the personal narratives of 17 people who work in Napa tourism — from winemaker to vineyard manager, from celebrity chef to wait staff, from hot air balloonist to masseuse. Their stories provide unexpected and entertaining insights into this new form of tourism, the people who engage in it, its impact on a now iconic place, and American consumer culture in the 21st century.

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. IT!
I bought this as an anniversary present for my husband because he proposed to me in Napa. The photographs in this gorgeous "scrapbook" brought back all the wonderful memories of our trip, captivated everything we loved about the place, and made us crave the lifestyle of Napa enough to ask "when can we go back?".

I was expecting this to be a trek of places to visit. What it became was a rather rambling collection of photos that left a lot to be desired. Since this book was recommended by Outdoor Photography magazine, I had high hopes. Didn't happen!

Matthiasson, Napa Valley: Current Releases The past of most wine regions becomes physically embodied in its most iconic destinations, whether grand Chateaux, or venerable old cellars. He quickly built up a book of business consulting on sustainable viticulture for a roster of clients that would turn most heads in Napa: Stag's Leap Wine Cellars , http://www. They will usher you into their dining room with a friendly hello, sit you down with little pomp or circumstance, and proceed to pour for you some of the most exciting wines being made in Napa, or indeed, all of California these days. "I knew we had to make some wine from these grapes," Steve added, "and that we should sell it. I had another client who would give me enough Cabernet to blend with it, and so we decided to do it. ". "We had no idea what we were getting into," said... Luckily one of their drinking buddies knew a thing or two about selling wine, and after sampling the results of what was ostensibly their first "commercial" vintage in 2003, said he thought he could sell it. And he did. That was 17 harvests ago, and Steve and Jill Matthiasson have made wine together ever since. A month after they started dating, the two crushed their first grapes together, from the teaching vineyard at U. C. Davis, and they made wine together. For many years, the wine was just for them -- a project in which they could involve the whole family -- and the quantities reflected that.

And this optimism isn’t based on simple faith, it’s based on something more fundamental: the knowledge of proprietors that they possess the most valuable commodity in American wine: “Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Pinot Noir (from California and Burgundy) may be the sizzle of the moment (and deservedly so), the contrarian wine even some Cabernet winemakers in Napa collect in their cellars, and that critics love to praise. So that touches on Bill’s #2 prediction, that the slump in Napa high-end wine (which we knew occurred after 2007, through anecdotes and confessions) is over. Granted, the beleaguered middle class (that’s me) continues to stuggle, but then again, we were never the ones that bought Harlan and all the other cult wines in the first place. But Pinot cannot rival Cabernet for sheer seriousness, and besides, for a wine to be famous it must be irrevocably connected to a place. Concerning #1, it had never occurred to me to ask anyone if Napa is all planted out, until Bill said so (and if anyone should know, it’s this man, whose eye constantly ranges over the Napa landscape, looking for things no one else sees). From everything I can see, the wealthy are spending again on all manner of toys, and that includes super-expensive wine. So let’s accept the fact that what we see in Napa Valley, in terms of vineyard acreage, is pretty much what we’re going to see 10, 20, 50 years from now.

If you saw the film , or if you know your wine history, you'll know that both red and white wines from this region stunned the French wine establishment in the mid-70s when they won a blind tasting competition in Paris. Napa wines would go on to win several more such competitions, securing California’s rightful place on the world wine map, much to annoyance of France's wine elite. ) to jump on the wine wagon, realizing that terroir , not snooty Paris wine critics, was really all a region needed to produce great wine. Whatever my opinion of the Napa wine trail, it must be said that this is a gorgeous region and a pleasure to drive through. This historical event not only annoyed the world's wine establishment, but it really did pave the way for other regions (like our own Okanagan, Australia, Chile, etc. I don't care how great and prestigious a winery thinks its wines are, $30 for a tasting Not only geographic beauty, the region boasts ideal climatic and soil conditions ( terroir ) for wine. We approached the valley via the 101, across the Golden Gate Bridge, which is much more scenic and interesting than the route we took back via Oakland and the Bay Bridge. All the new ball parks these days seem less like homages to baseball and more like homages to corporate branding.    Yes, a rental car from SF is a must if you expect to have any mobility and freedom touring this region, although I suppose a day trip via guided tour does at least save you the worry of getting busted for impaired driving.

If you’re lucky, you’ll be hosted by the grumpy patriarch of the family, who seems ambivalent about whether or not people like his wine (what matters is that he  likes his wine). Tourists who don’t want to run the risk of a pricey DUI ticket often decide to hire a limousine, ride the Napa Wine Train, or take a bus tour. The staff is one of the friendliest in the valley, and the wine is always tasty. The drivers know their wine, and we’ve had great luck following their recommendations. You go to Van Der Heyden for the experience, not the wine. You’ll notice that I haven’t mentioned the wine yet… that’s because it isn’t very memorable. They recommend making an appointment , but we’ve never had a problem walking in. Tasting fee: Not listed, but I remember it being very affordable ($10 or so for a flight), and I believe they waive the fee if you purchase a bottle (don’t quote me... They’ll provide you with a knowledgeable chauffeur to drive you to the wineries of your choice (instead of the big wineries frequented by every tourism company in the valley), for $50 an hour. We’ve been away from California for over a year now, but I still get regular requests from friends and family asking for advice about wineries in Napa Valley. Tasting fee: Not listed, but definitely reasonable (around $10 or so), and they’ll waive the fee if you purchase a couple of bottles. I recommend starting with the winery farthest from your hotel and making your way back through the valley to get the most out of your time. For a more personalized tasting experience,  Napa Bee Driven  is a much better option.
