Napa Red- Red is for Blood
I downloaded the book on my kindle late one evening and was done by noon the next day. This book was an easy read and if you have ever been to the Napa Valley you will recognize the local spots they mentioned in the book. It was a fun book of mystery and intrigue and I was always wondering what was going to happen next. It was fun to read about the characters because, be honest who hasn't dreamed of all of a sudden being plucked out of an ordinary life and then being asked to help be part of solving international crimes and stopping terrorism? Having the setting take place in the world renowned wine country of The Napa Valley just added that little bit of sophisication. Looking forward to their next book-Napa White- White is for Innocence.

Great Book!
My husband and I just visited Napa and Sonoma Counties, and our trip was special because we used Tilar Mazzeo's Back Lane Wineries of Napa and Back Lane Wineries of Sonoma. We visited wineries that are family run rather than corporate owned. We had some great wine and met fantastic people who love what they do. Remember, though, that if you make an appointment at a small winery and get a personal tour, you will feel compelled to buy a bottle or two at the very least. It is a personal experience, and you will often be talking with the person who made the wine that you are enjoying. Now, whenever my husband and I open one of the bottles, we remember the person who put their heart into the making of it. Buy the book, and get the Sonoma County version as well. Have a great trip.

Great book for wine lovers traveling to Napa, will save you from visiting only the usual suspects
Tilar Mazzeo's "Back lane wineries of Napa" is a great book for a specific audience: true wine lovers who are visiting Napa Valley, are not bothered by wines costing $30 a bottle or more, and who want to have individualized, hands-on engagement with small producers instead of the mass-producing wineries. If that description fits you, then it's a must buy -- finding a single great experience is well worth the cost of the book. The format of the book is 1-3 small-sized pages per winery, with a description of the winery's history, the winemakers and/or owners (most often the same), and the style of wines they produce. It describes what is unique to each winery: the location, the wine style, or the story behind it. Mazzeo also profiles a few of the wines and the price range for each winery, so you generally know what to expect ahead of time before making an appointment. It makes no pretense of being complete, and instead selects a few dozen interesting and unique places...

Some seventy-five discoveries are profiled here
Back Lane Wineries of Napa is a pick for any who would locate the wineries 'off the beaten path' in a California county well known for its winery paths. These are smaller venues offering world-class wines and tastings - but are much lesser-known than the larger chateaus. Some seventy-five discoveries are profiled here, with hours, tasting offerings, websites, locations, and history making them easy to plan for.

Product Description

Back Lane Wineries of Napa is a guide to wineries where you can find excellent handcrafted wines made by on-site proprietors, often with only local distribution and limited production, places where wine tasting gets down-to-earth—no one needs to show off how developed his or her palate is. These are often also where sustainable and organic viticulture is being pioneered. Above all, these are wines that are likely to be a new experience, and among the back-lane wineries of Napa, there are still discoveries to be made.

Tilar J. Mazzeo reveals a different side of the valley—a place that’s vibrant, young, and far more accessible and friendly than you might assume. In addition to the profiles of more than seventy wineries, there are Wine Tasting Essentials, Wine Shipping Services, an overview of the area, ideas about how to plan an itinerary, the etiquette of tasting, general prices, and much more practical information. There are also restaurant suggestions and local attractions that can be worked into an itinerary spontaneously. Top to learn more

Uncorked: The Novice's Guide to Wine
As one who has enjoyed and appreciated wine over many years, I was very skeptical that this book would teach me anything I didn't already know. I did, however, find this book by Paul Kreider not only informative, but enjoyable and easy to read. Paul's sense of humor and personal wine making experiences are reflected in the content. His style enables the reader to feel as if he is speaking to you because he truly cares about your education around the subject of wine. Paul does not lecture you, but instead gives clear and inciteful information about how to taste and enjoy wine. I bought several copies of this book to give to my twenty-something children and their friends. If they read this book, they will gain the confidence to feel as if they know what they are doing when they purchase wine or order it at a restaurant. Additionally, I am also giving several of my friends a copy of this book as well. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Even my more informed friends...

Uncorked The Novice's Guide to Wine
We have been exposed to the world of wine so when we picked up Krieider's " Uncorked" we questioned, "Will this reading advance our understanding and appreciation of wine?" We are happy to report that this easy and enjoyable book refreshed our knowledge and filled in interesting blanks that surrounds it. Both Paul's keen interest in wine and his expertise in wine making are evident in this affordable collection of wine notes. It's nice to hear from someone who has produced a most flavorful, smooth, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon in his own Napa winery. Fortunate were we to share one of his last bottles of 2004 Reserve! It was as delightful as "Uncorked." Happy reading! Clink! Clink!

Customer Review

amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We tested it!We took a cheap table wine, tasted it as it came from the bottle and then as it was presented through the Soiree Wine Decanter....a distinct improvement in the taste. The wine had lost it's overriding acidity, instead we could taste a deep black cherry flavor--one that is often present in much more expensive wines. So, already satisfied with our purchase, we proceeded to a moderately expensive wine, tasting it both ways once again. And, once again a definite improvement in the taste..it seemed this time, that a whole bouquet of tastes had emerged that we couldn't detect in the wine served directly from the bottle. Our conclusion is that no wine lover should be without one and that no red wine should be served without passing through the Soiree. White wines, we found, were not so dramatically affected, but we use it with them as well--not taking a chance of missing a single nuance of flavor in every bottle

Does what it claims and easily
I am suspicious of products that have high "gimmick" potential but this one works. I still prefer to decant and wait a few hours but when you forget this does it in few seconds. I actually can tell no difference. It passes the test of my Italian friends who are even more suspicious of gadgets like this.

Very nice DEEP RED Zinfandel
Purchased 8-weeks ago... made precisely per instructions... wow... very surprised... far exceeded expectations. Not the big, jammy Lodi style which I favor... more typical of Napa style. Fruit forward, rounder... dry at about 13.5% AC. I can't wait to try again at about 6-months. Will purchase again... a real bargain at Amazon's price.

Try Oak Chips With This Wine
This wine is comparable with some of the more expensive wine kits. It was a bit fruity after four weeks. I added six to eight ounces of oak chips with half of the wine (2.5 gal). I rested the wine in the chips for three months and couldn't believe the difference. This wine recipe is so good no one believes I made it. Do yourselves a favor and try the oak with this wine. You won't be disappointed.

Buy Napa Wine

Although some local wine shop owners agreed ranking wine consumption is a multi-faced feat and likely skewed endeavor, all agreed Reno’s wine culture is rich and impossible to ignore. I learned that Napa Valley came to light in 1976 when we finally beat the French in a blind wine-tasting, and that every wine has a different temperature for storing and glass for drinking. On the third Saturday of every month, winos celebrated the Wine Walk, which includes a glass of wine at more than 30 participating Reno eateries and bars. I visited the many locally owned wine stores and boutiques, not to mention a barrage of wine events that varied from daytime to evening — upscale to casual. Every Monday, West Street Wine Bar hosts a wine movie night. While the average annual expenditure for wine in the United States is $911 per year, or about $17 a week, Renoites spend an average of $1,659 per year — about $32 per week. For every wine shop I’ve visited in town, I’ve walked away with far more than a bottle. Despite Reno’s paltry attempt to be as glamorous and classy as its neighbor to the south, my family and I found that it had ousted Las Vegas in at least one way — wine. What I didn’t know was despite my family’s unyielding enthusiasm, I was far from knowing anything about wine. According to a 2010 study by the Media Audit, which tracks consumer spending, adults in Reno have the highest per capita wine consumption in the country (New Hampshire, Vermont and Florida alternating runner-up positions). So with only mild uncertainty, I pursued my journalism degree at the university by week and I spent my weekends studying Reno’s wine culture, which to my pleasure was more than plentiful.

99 at KL Wines, The Wine Stop, $18 if you buy 6 at Safeway (Burlingame). You can see the complete list of wines at the Wine Enthusiast Website. I purchased three wines to drink with our guests and did a side-by-side comparison. If you have the budget, pick a few of these wines to put away for up to ten years. Each vintage year I try to stock away a mixed case of Napa Valley Cabernet in my cellar.

Matthiasson, Napa Valley: Current Releases The past of most wine regions becomes physically embodied in its most iconic destinations, whether grand Chateaux, or venerable old cellars. He quickly built up a book of business consulting on sustainable viticulture for a roster of clients that would turn most heads in Napa: Stag's Leap Wine Cellars , http://www. They will usher you into their dining room with a friendly hello, sit you down with little pomp or circumstance, and proceed to pour for you some of the most exciting wines being made in Napa, or indeed, all of California these days. "I knew we had to make some wine from these grapes," Steve added, "and that we should sell it. I had another client who would give me enough Cabernet to blend with it, and so we decided to do it. ". "We had no idea what we were getting into," said... Luckily one of their drinking buddies knew a thing or two about selling wine, and after sampling the results of what was ostensibly their first "commercial" vintage in 2003, said he thought he could sell it. And he did. That was 17 harvests ago, and Steve and Jill Matthiasson have made wine together ever since. A month after they started dating, the two crushed their first grapes together, from the teaching vineyard at U. C. Davis, and they made wine together. For many years, the wine was just for them -- a project in which they could involve the whole family -- and the quantities reflected that.

I’ll be a bit of a wine nerd here and point out that two robust red wine lovers never come into contact with a Riesling worth much. So we figured why waste the calories and the BAC on wine we knew we wouldn’t buy. If you need help planning your trip to Napa, I freelance for a very affordable fee (which can also be paid in wine). Things started poorly when it felt like the waiter was harassing us for not ordering wine, even after we told him we had been drinking all day. The tasting room is literally covered in signed currency and the wines are set out on a simple kitchen counter. Sterling is a pretty common brand and we already knew we didn’t enjoy their basic table wines. I was told by several people that you can’t go wrong with a restaurant in wine country. After our wine hose at Franciscan mentioned Italian food, we were set on what to eat. Hubster’s ravioli were bland and the ‘wine sauce’ was just odd. The reserve tasting was an extra $10 per person but totally worth it. We were impressed with several of their offerings and were doing the “do we join their club” math to figure out what we wanted to buy. The schedule started to come together when I grouped the wineries by area and started making appointments where necessary (wineries marked in yellow). Experience: The $25 fee includes a basic tasting and a ride to the winery in an aerial tram. It’s still making me salivate and I’m itching to make some romesco and add in a little chipotle.
