Watch it anyway - it's fun
If you've read the other reviews, you'll know that the movie has needlessly tacked on a fictional romantic interest, and the dialog is flat. BUT the dog fight scenes are entirely worth the movie. Making what now seems like quaint little stunt planes into a menacing, daring and lethal attack machines is an achievement all its own. Note to producers and directors: watch the 1970's mini-series "Fall of Eagles", "Edward the King", and many others to see how create dialog - often from things that were actually said.If you're a military history or history buff, you should nonetheless enjoy this, even if it has you cringeing at the lost potential of this film.

Complex yet Interesting
I must admit after reviewing the trailer of this film I was a little skeptical to watch the entire movie. However, after reviewing the film my perceptions were completely altered. This movie was complex at times and a little hard to understand, however, watching the lives of these two people, and seeing the obstacles they faced were very relatable to real life. Many gay people are confused and often ashamed of their feelings in today's society, as was Michael in this film. Many people feel as though they should act as if are someone else. There is lots of envy, and suspicion present in the film. Julia and Michael face many struggles throughout the film. The characters battle with not only life issues but also with the will to survive. The acting in the film was impressive. From a feminist point of view, I enjoyed the movie. I was not offended by any of the topics in the film. It is hard to realize that many women rely on their promiscuity to survive. The movie actually broadened my...

A powerful production not to be missed
I don't usually review DVDs and CDs but after reading Claire Tomalin's excellent new biography of Thomas Hardy I decided to rent a couple of films based on his novels. "Jude the Obscure", a mini-series delivered in 1971, was my first choice and what a choice it was! Set on two DVDs (six episodes of forty-five minutes each) I came away dazzled not only with a greater appreciation of Hardy but of this particular group of actors.Jude is a character of great sympathy who is in constant conflict between his marriage to one woman and his passions for another. Leading this strong group is Robert Powell (the entire cast is British, of course) and he delivers a tour de force in the title role of Jude. The supporting women, (Fiona Walker as Jude's cousin and real love and Alex Marshall as his wife) express a range of emotions that plays true to Hardy's work. This mini-series became so engrossing as I got into it that I watched the entire series in one sitting. It's a drama-packed...

Breath taking, Dramatic, Depressive, but very impressive
Of all the films based on a Hardy novel, this one is absolutely the most dramatic. The camera shots are very good and the music makes this production even more sad. I really liked this film very much, because I'm a Hardy fan and this film is very close to the book, nevertheless the book is still better, but that is always the case with films based on a book.

A Classic BBC Adaptation of a Controversial Literary Masterpiece
As Seen on PBS’ Masterpiece Theatre
Jude Fawley is a poor stone carver who is tricked into a loveless marriage and ultimately forced to give up his dreams of a university education. After his wife deserts him, he begins a scandalous relationship with his cousin Sue Bridehead. Top to learn more
When he is old enough, Jude trains as a stonemason, but his ambition is to become a scholar. This alone would be an enormous challenge, given the rigid Victorian class system, but Jude's problems are compounded when he is tricked into marrying a local girl. When his wife deserts him he is able to go to Christminster, where he meets his cousin, Sue Bridehead. Like Jude, Sue feels trapped by her position in society, and the two kindred spirits struggle together to achieve their ambitions.
Like much television drama of the period, Jude the Obscure was shot on video and feels a little studio bound, a marked contrast to the lavish location filming of more recent versions. However, the relative simplicity of the production focuses attention on the performances, especially Robert Powell's intense, complex Jude. With a running time of close to five hours, this film is able to do justice both to the subtlety of Hardy's novel and its tragic power. --Simon Leake Top to learn more
Jude the Hermit
Like the other reviewer, I finished this two-DVD mini-series in one sitting. I was also clueless what I was getting, but my passion lasted 'til the very end.It was very difficult to understand at first because of the regional British accent characters were speaking. It's to provide authenticity of the language spoken by people from that setting. However, I wished the DVD production company could have provided close captioning for easier watching.Do not let the language issue deter you though, because the story is very rewarding and very timeless, not only for the production value like the other reviewer pointed out, but the story itself transcends the time period it is set (which is Victorian England, early Victorian, I presume). The other reviewer already mentioned something about Jude's marriage life. I must mention there is another tragedy (a counterpoint) in Jude's life some of us may relate well. The early focus of the story was on Jude's...

Bunuel's genius isn't obscure.
Luis Bunuel's last film . . . and he checked out with a masterpiece. It's the fifth adaptation of a torrid novel written in 1898 called *La Femme et le Pantin* (The Woman and the Puppet). The only famous version, besides this one, is 1935's *The Devil is a Woman* starring -- who else? -- Marlene Dietrich. In *That Obscure Object of Desire*, Fernando Rey is bedevilled by TWO women: in what can only be described as a stroke of genius, Bunuel cast 2 ladies to play the same part of Conchita, a young Spanish flamenco dancer who begins the movie as Rey's housemaid. The considerably different physiognomy of Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina would at first suggest a "light" or "dark" side of Conchita (or a "sophisticated" or "earthy" side -- take your pick). However, each actress is assigned to her respective scenes in a totally arbitrary manner: both run hot and cold with Rey. The CHARACTER is the same, no matter which actress plays her . . . which says something about...

A movie of stunning relevance...
Ignore Leonard Maltin; there is not a single act of physical violence intended to arouse, although there's PLENTY of emotional abuse and a pretty harsh expression of rage. This is a movie about how sexual politics, specifically the chase of a woman, can consume a man's life, and how said sexual politics are, in the end, pointless in the context of the wider world. And not only are they pointless, they can be abruptly ended BY the wider world. In light of recent events, that's an excellent lesson to have around.Of course, this being a movie from the director who gave us "Un Chien Andalou", there are some...offbeat touches. The role of Conchita is played by two actresses, a Frenchwoman and a Spaniard (slightly distracting at first, but once you know their faces, it fades.) A dwarf shows up rather early on. But overall, it's not particularly strange...just bitter. Despite it being his final film, the director's hatred of the idle rich comes through loud and clear.I...

Bunuel triumphant
Nobody makes films like Luis Bunuel. In this, his last film, he captures the related themes of obsessive desire, frustration, and immaturity perfectly, crafting a wicked black comedy. When a wealthy middle-aged man, played to perfection by Fernando Rey, is entranced by a young girl he has recently hired as one of the maids in his grand mansion, he pursues her obsessively. The girl is played by two different actresses; here Bunuel is slyly saying to the audience, This man is too (two) distracted, too (two) obsessed. The girl alternately leads him on and crushes his hopes, time after time, yet still the man returns to be alternately entranced and crushed. His actions are ultimately revealed to be far too immature--if nothing else, based on the behavior of the girl--for his age, but he can't help himself.Simultaneously, a guerilla group plants bombs and blows things up all over the city of Paris where the film is set. The immature need for immediate results, intensified by...

So we’ve been mostly working on the tool set, the production pipeline, setting up the new stages in Los Angeles, setting up the new visual effects pipeline in New Zealand, that sort of thing. See, Avatar was good, but in my opinion was not up there with Cameron’s best, like Aliens, Terminator, The Abyss or even Titanic, so the news that he will only concentrate on Avatar films is a bit upsetting.
