A masterpiece -- and I will never forget it!
John Steinbeck wrote this classic gem in 1937. It's been a Broadway play and there have been several adaptations of it in movies and TV. I was generally familiar with the story but this was the first time I actually read the book. Wow! I was completely blown away! This is the story of a two lonely and alienated men who work as farm laborers, drifting from job to job in California. Lennie is gentle giant, physically strong but mentally retarded. George guides and protects Lennie but also depends on him for companionship. Together, they have a dream to someday buy a little farm where they can grow crops and raise rabbits and live happily ever after. This, of course, is not to be as the title suggests. "The best laid plans of mice and men" is a line in a poem by Robert Burns, which describes how a field mouse's world is destroyed by a plow.Steinbeck's narrative voice is seemingly simple in his descriptions of nature of as well as the details of the bunkhouse. His...

Post-Depression American Tragedy
"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck remains properly on the reading lists of high school students because of the regional imagery through succinct dialogue. Unlike "Grapes of Wrath," Steinbeck brings us swiftly into each moment, never letting us linger too long before walking us to the next place. The American Dream has many variations, but always, it is about independence and the pride of being one's own man. Lennie and George want this independence more than most men, but have less than most men to get there. In their case, it isn't a white picket fence, but a farm where they can raise rabbits.Lennie is not a bright man. He desires to care for someone and to be loved, but is unable to think past his own fear. George tries to protect him, but he too, although smarter than Lennie, is managed by his insecurity and foolishness. The story surrounds Lennie and George's efforts to get and retain work on ranch near Soledad, and more so, toward their...

"A guy needs somebody to be near him....A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody."
Written in 1937, when the Depression was still affecting all aspects of the farming community, this powerful novel depicts the lives of migrant workers--grim, pessimistic, and offering little hope for an improved future. Focusing on two characters who arrive in the Salinas Valley during peak season, Steinbeck creates touching scenes between Lenny, a big, severely limited worker who does not know his own strength, and George, a whippet-thin man who serves as Lenny's constant companion and protector. Both Lenny and George have dreams of one day living on their own farm, where Lenny, who loves the feeling of soft things--even dead mice--wants to take care of rabbits. George hopes one day to benefit from his own hard work on his own farm and to create an environment where Lenny can be safe from his own impulses. As Steinbeck brings the characters on the ranch to life, he shows how every person there has dreams of a different life but few opportunities to change the lives...

Product Description

They are an unlikely pair: George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation. Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own.

When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations of a flirtatious woman, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him. "A thriller, a gripping tale . . . that you will not set down until it is finished. Steinbeck has touched the quick." —The New York Times Top to learn more

Old classic
Great read. Bought this because it was a required reader for my son who is not big on reading anything and he loved it. He actually wanted me to try and find another book, go figure?! Nothing like an old classic to inspire reading. Go figure!

Good supplement for low-level readers.
I purchased these as a supplement to the novel in a low-level sophomore English class. The questions were helpful to get the kids thinking and talking. The thematic discussions were good for essay pre-writing ideas. My complaint is that this book is really for use after readers have finished the whole book. If you go sequentially through it, it gives away the surprise ending. I just used parts of it and jumped around because of this. I really wanted it to use WHILE we read the book.

Poignant Classic
George and Lennie are two itinerant farm workers moving from one California farm to another. The two of them move together in order to avoid the loneliness and misery that usually accompanies nomads. Lennie is an incredibly strong and hard worker who has a mind of a child. Unfortunately for him, his strength and child-like instincts oftentimes get him in trouble. George has known Lennie since he was just a kid, and is the brains behind this unlikely duo. George dreams of a bigger life for the two of them, a life where they would settle on a small farm of their own. The questions remain, however, of how will they acquire enough money to purchase such a place and if they will be able to do so without getting into any really big trouble on account of Lennie's unpredictable behavior. This is perhaps the most poignant and well developed of Steinbeck's short novels. The characters are some of the most memorable ones in all of the twentieth century literature, and are masterfully...

Of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men, one of the best novels I've read before. But, before you read it, you should have at least a slight background about what happened on the great depression. Also, The author conceptualize many characters inside this novel and as more you read as more the story gets exciting. I highly recommend to read Of Mice and Men.

This book is amazing.
At 18, this is possibly my most favorite book to lug around. Granted it's hard to read laying on your back, but then again, I have smmall hands. Steinbeck is a fantastic author and this is a fantastic book. It's a good thing there are five books in the collection; after each one, you're dying for more.

A Good Steinbeck Collection
If you enjoy Steinbeck, then this is a nice book to have. It has copies of The Grapes of Wrath, the Moon Is Down, Cannery Row, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men. The quality of each book is up to the opinions and personality of the stories, but the collection is a nice. A lovely hard cover and golden sided pages. It's a huge book, but hey, it's got The Grapes of Wrath, the Moon Is Down, Cannery Row, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men in one huge collection. What do you expect!? All in all, a very nicely done book.

Wonderful Collection of Steinbeck
These are some of my favorite Steinbeck works. This collection is definitely worth the price! Of course, the work that stands out among the others is The Grapes of Wrath. I love how in The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck has these essays between the chapters filled with philosophical insights.

books because of that. Of Mice and Men looks at some of those topics that as people we like to. shy away from because they're 'too hard'.

George, realizing he is doomed to a life of loneliness and despair like the rest of the migrant workers and wanting to spare Lennie a painful death at the hands of the vengeful and violent Curley, shoots Lennie in the back of the head before the... George protects Lennie at the beginning by telling him that if Lennie gets into trouble George won't let him "tend them rabbits. Candy, the aged, one-handed ranch-hand, even offers to pitch in with Lennie and George so they can buy the farm by the end of the month.

Extensive illustrations and imaginative, enlightening use of graphics help to make each book in this series livelier, easier, and more fun to use than ordinary literature plot summaries. Each book describes a classic novel and drama by explaining themes, elaborating on characters, and discussing each author’s unique literary style, use of language, and point of view.

I wasn’t their for the whole movie but from what I did see, I would of changed when George shoots lennie make It less abrupt, in the book they built up suspense with 2 pages of lennie talking and George talking about the farm in the movie he said... If I were to remake the Of Mice and Men film, I would add the part when in the book it discussed how Slim and George went off after George shot Lennie. Also in the book they skipped when after George killed lennie everyone runs over to George and candy asks George if they are still going to get the farm. The book shows how hard it was for George to kill Lennie, and the movie did not stress that enough. It is also very important to keep the ending of the movie the same as the book because the story would not be nearly as good. I did not find too many differences between the movie and the book and I really liked both. I would also add that George and Lennie would have saved up enough money to buy land for a house and let Lennie tend to the rabbits like he wanted to. I would also change the way everyone acts toward Crooks, everyone should be treated the same in... Also I would keep the scene where Lennie and Curley fight because Curley thought he was big and bad but Lennie handed it to him as he deserved it. I thought the music made scenes more suspenseful which made you think of what was going to happen next. If I were to remake the movie Of Mice and Men then I would make the beginning start with Lennie and George as kids and Aunt Claire would be in there too. I would make the movie end with Lennie, George, Candy, Crooks, Slim and Curley’s Wife leaving with Lennie’s dog.
