This has been a great book for learning Project 2007. If you already know Project, it does a great job of providing review material, guiding you away from unnecessary chapters. If you have never really spent time with Project, this book does a very good job of walking you through, Step by Step, aspects and capabilities of Project, as well as exposing you to solid project management practices.

Full and Practical
Once I get a Step by Step series book, and its operating model is just what you need if you start from scratch or you're an advanced specialist looking for updates. Very precise and clear explanations and companion CD with samples files for practicing just rocks!, you have the entire scenario and just need to get creative to escalate your neverending questions to the sample scenario, which is just as clear to see as on the field.2007 version is just what I spected from the book, covering every topic from basic use to advanced control and tracking and integration with Project Server. MS Office Project 2007
I bought this book because it was recommended for an online-college course that I am taking. I couldn't believe that the same book was much higher in price on several other websites and how affordable it was to get through Amazon. The book itself is excellent as it gives step-by-step directions on how to use the project. It is an excellent resource and very easy to use. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking detailed, but easy to understand directions regarding the product it is designed for.

Not as bad as others would have you believe
My first attempt to own Microsoft Projects was to buy the 2003 version. In general, Microsoft did best in 2003. I was rough on Microsoft Office 2007 for good reason: it is not an improvement over 2003. After getting bogus software I bit the bullet and bought Projects 2007; the guy who provided it said it ran fine on his machine.All in all, this software is adequate. I am only disappointed in that I expected more after years of development. I used an Gantt chart program developed by Symantec in the 1990s; I always suspected that MS stole the core software but this the nature of the business: "Yo, ho, ho... it's the pirate's life for me."Other reviewers will tell you that the software won't work with the web. I really don't care. If you want that, pay the extra for Primavara. If you want Pert charts, Gantt charts and want to do it simple, with your eyes closed, then this is the software for you. How to look good at work
Microsoft Project is an unmatched tool for managing all aspects of a project, and the power of its integration with other MS tools is awesome. But its potential is very complex and not for the faint of heart. Before you start blithely loading your milestones and allocating your resources, you really need to understand the concepts of defining your project and conceptualizing the plan. The software won't teach you that and it's the easiest thing in the world to wind up with a Gantt chart that looks like the head of Medusa in no time flat.That's where this manual makes its mark. Yes, it's a good primer on the software; yes, it's a good reference manual as long as you can guess the term for what you want to do. "Unhide columns," for example: that's what I wanted to do this week, and two minutes with the index and a page reference got the job done for me. Fantastic Resource
I've always hated "How to" manuals written by people who know the application, but not the work. This book shows how to use MS Project from the perspective of a Project Manager.It's alway been ironic when I've used other resources that the person who wrote the book explains all the buttons, but not when/why they are really used. "The Missing Manual" is the perfect marriage of function and purpose.

Better, but needs new features
The big improvement over 2007 is really in visual design. What I still want in this product is better integration with other Office apps. The problem with Project is still that the project manager creates a complex schedule, and the team members understandably ignore their deadlines, simply because they can't see through the tangle of Project.I'd recommend buying this, but also the plug-in called "Tap on the Shoulder" that automatically reminds team members of their task deadlines.It's inexpensive and makes a world of difference.If Microsoft is paying attention, they'll wrap a feature like this into the next version of Project.

NOT MUCH OF AN UPDATE SINCE 2000
I HAD NOT BOUGHT A VERSION OF MS PROJECT SINCE 2000 AND WAS DISAPPOINTED TO SEE FEW IMPROVEMENTS AND QUITE A FEW STEPS BACKWARDS. IT SEEMS MICROSOFT IS "DUMBING" DOWN ALL THEIR PRODUCTS BY TAKING AWAY FEATURES THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT USE BUT THAT PROS NEED TO MAKE THE PRODUCT DO MORE. THE ADDITION OF MULTIPLE UNDO'S IS GOOD, BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF BUGS AND YOU SHOULD SAVE OFTEN TO AVOID LOSING YOUR WORK. IF MICROSOFT WANTS TO DOMINATE IN THIS MARKET, THEY NEED TO ADD STANDARD IMPORT/EXPORT FEATURES FOR CPM SCHEDULES AS WELL AS ALLOWING FOR A MORE DYNAMIC SCHEDULE UPDATE PROCESS OVER THE LIFE OF A PROJECT.

Very good and to the point for the basics
Very good for the novice person such as myself with this product and in my use and going through this provided a very solid basis for learning the use and abilities of Project 2007 and giving the confidence to learn further through trial and error.You could learn any prodcut with your own trial and error, however, again this is a good starting platform for the novice and good review for regular users of past editions and coming up to speed on the newest version here.In most cases these Dummy Books are not overpriced as are some of the others. There are expert books out there to that provide all the ins and outs if that is what you need this would NOT be the book.
