Legends Passed Down
The stories told within this book fit into an overarching narrative of an old grandfather passing the stories down to his great-grandchild, and that aspect of the story is very grounding and real. There is a sweetness and reverence in the relationship between the storyteller and his descendant in giving the gift of these stories as his final act in life. Having studied folklore as a college student, I found more in the stories than the casual reader might, things that the "classroom ideas" sections at the end of each story never approach. I liked the traditional stories, but could have done without the rehash of the Sand Creek Massacre, which gets better treatment in Thom Hatch's "Black Kettle."

Words you can feel
I picked up this extraordinary book of poetry with no idea what to expect. I read and reread the poems just to feel again their quiet intensity. The poetry is beautifully crafted and often surprising. I read a poem by Ms Raban and I want the whole world to read it. She is truly a remarkable talent. I feel fortunate to have found this book.

Throughout her career, Toni Raben’s creative efforts have led to design work on TV and movie sets, at Tiffany & Co. and Bloomingdales and eventually to her own exhibited paintings.
Ms. Raben’s turn to writing earned her an eight poem debut in the prestigious American Poetry Review. She lives with her husband Henry Eckstein in New York City.
