Intriguing Investigations into the Lives and Minds of Ravens
In "Mind of the Raven", biologist Bernd Heinrich delves into the behavior of ravens as individuals who might have a conscious choice, as opposed to taking a strictly behavioral ecologist perspective of those behaviors as being simply the results of evolutionary necessity. Heinrich strives to share the insight into the world of ravens which he gained over the course of nearly a decade of studying and interacting with ravens, both wild and captive, at his Vermont and Maine homes. "Mind of the Raven" isn't confined to the birds' intelligence or consciousness, although chapters on these fascinating and controversial subjects are included. The "mind" of the book's title encompasses all behavior and experience in these birds' lives. Heinrich details innumerable observations and experiments which he conducted on the subjects of raven feeding and educating their young, cooperation, hunting, adoption, dominance, sensory perception, individual recognition,...

Idiosyncratic, charming, thought-provoking and informative
This book is a wealth of information about ravens. While most of other books are set in Maine, here Heinrich travels farther afield to discuss ravens in the Arctic, Yellowstone, a pet raven in Germany, and elsewhere -- in addition to his own wild and tame ravens in Maine.I can imagine some scientists (and others) being annoyed by Heinrich's style. His research questions are guided by his own natural curiosity and not by what the scientific community defines as important. He isn't trained as an ornithologist. Heinrich clearly depends on his own observations and does not like to delegate -- so his methods are not those of a scientist running a lab or something like a lab. For most of us, though, these "faults" make him all the more interesting. He is certainly high on the list of authors I'd like to invite to dinner.Heinrich also seems to be a born teacher. He does a great job explaining ravens as well as explaining the process of discovery that brings him...

Product Description

Heinrich involves us in his quest to get inside the mind of the raven. But as animals can only be spied on by getting quite close, Heinrich adopts ravens, thereby becoming a "raven father," as well as observing them in their natural habitat. He studies their daily routines, and in the process, paints a vivid picture of the ravens' world. At the heart of this book are Heinrich's love and respect for these complex and engaging creatures, and through his keen observation and analysis, we become their intimates too.

Heinrich's passion for ravens has led him around the world in his research. Mind of the Raven follows an exotic journey—from New England to Germany, and from Montana to Baffin Island in the high Arctic—offering dazzling accounts of how science works in the field, filtered through the eyes of a passionate observer of nature. Each new discovery and insight into raven behavior is thrilling to read, at once lyrical and scientific.

Beyond croaking, "Nevermore," what exactly do ravens do all day? Bernd Heinrich, biology professor at the University of Vermont and author of Ravens in Winter, has spent more than a decade learning the secrets of these giants of the crow family. He has observed startlingly complex activities among ravens, including strong pair-bonding, use of tools, elaborate vocal communication, and even play. Ravens are just plain smart, and we can see much of ourselves in their behavior. They seem to be affectionate, cranky, joyful, greedy, and competitive, just like us. And in Mind of the Raven, Heinrich makes no bones about attributing emotions and intellect to Corvus corax--just not the kind we humans can understand. He mostly catalogs their behaviors in the manner of a respectful anthropologist, although a few moments of proud papa show through when he describes the pet ravens he hand-raised to adulthood.

Heinrich spends hundreds of loving hours feeding roadkill fragments to endlessly hungry raven chicks, and cold days in blinds watching wild ravens squabble and frolic. He is a passionate fan of his "wolf-birds," a name he gave them when he made the central discovery of the book: that ravens in Yellowstone National Park are dependent on wolves to kill for them. Mind of the Raven offers inspiring insight into both the lives of ravens and the mind of a truly gifted scientist. --Therese Littleton Top to learn more

Gotta love this raving naturalist
Bernd applies his multi-faceted brand of research to a species that is clearly close to his heart (the raven), with spectacular results. He weaves anecdotes and scientific studies together flawlessly to draw conclusions that are hard to argue with, if only because he refuses to draw unwarranted conclusions when the evidence isn't clear. He personally studies ravens in his northeastern home area, in Alaska, and in Germany to note the differences between different populations of the animal. He also draws extensively on his observations from his own aviary, where it seems he is at times obsessively painstaking in recording nuances of behavior that would fly over the heads of the average bird owner. The Good and the Bad:This book has been done right, with a real attempt to keep the reader's interest without compromising the scientific value of the work. The information given is enough to be compelling without being too boring about statistics. The end of the book gets a...

WT....H??
Customer Video Review Length:: 1:00 MinsI bought this based on the other positive user reviews I found here. Unfortunately, I feel I cannot give a fair review of this product, as the batteries are worn out and there does not seem to be any way to replace them. The stitching is loose in the back of this "toy" Raven, so I can only assume this has already been ascertained by another disappointed buyer prior to me.Somehow...I don't think this lil guy is supposed to sound like this...and the company has refused my multiple attempts to receive any form of customer service from them...so if AMDL is the only company to buy it from...you'll be FAR better off waiting for someone else to list it.I'm just saying...

Audubon aren't keeping up their quality as they should
Very cute and somewhat realistic; the only issue I have with this plush (and the newer Audubon birds made after 2010) is that the beak and claws are no longer made out of leather but cloth instead. When I bought an Audubon Red-Eye vireo that was made in 2003, it had a leather beak and good stitching quality. Disappointing, but nevertheless a decent toy for anyone to cuddle with or collect. The score would be a 3.5 due to Audubon's slack off in quality, but I gave it a 4 anyway.

Gorgeous!!
This piece is SO much prettier in person than in the photo. The feathers have a lovely blue iridescence that is not easy to see in the pic. It also has a nice weight to it...not too heavy or too light (quality material). The detail is wonderful...every feather and even the eyes were amazing. It was a gift for my aunt and she LOVED it! The order arrived promptly, despite the holiday season. Bonus: better price than elsewhere.

A conspiracy of ravens
When you are feeling bored with life and cannot think of anything else to do, ask your nearest and dearest friends and relations to recommend their favorite books from when they were young. You're bound to be amazed by the insight you receive when you find out that your dreamy peculiar friend loved "The Giving Tree" while your uptight straight-as-a-rod neighbor was a fan of "Mertle the Turtle". I was once asking a friend of mine what book he best preferred when he mentioned "Arabel's Raven" by Joan Aiken. I'd heard of Ms. Aiken before, of course. The author of that magnificent "Wolves of Willoughby Chase", Aiken was the gothic queen of her day. But a quick glance at the cover of "Arabel's Raven" shows she had a lighter sillier side as well. Illustrated by an illustrator best known, perhaps, for his Roald Dahl books, Quentin Blake adds his distinctive style to this book about a girl and her perpetually voracious and curious raven.Mr. Jones, we are told right off the...

Just for kids? Nevermore!
I am 19 years old, and first came across this book at a thrift store. The cover depicted a small girl with a pan on her head holding the handle of a red wagon in which was perched a raven wearing a dishtowel. I was immediately intrigued. The story of Arabel and Mortimer is one that I have read over and over and over, and I still laugh aloud each time I read it. This book is absolutely marvellous, and I was constantly telling friends to read it. Unfortunately, I lost my copy, and lo and behold! It's out of print...but this is a book I'll be buying again as soon as possible. It is hilarious, weird, crazy, and just great. It should be read by everyone.

Still available in the UK
I have loved this book since I was a kid. I suppose it was strange for a second-grader to go about saying 'nevermore', but this book started a fascination with ravens for me. I still want my own Mortimer! I was in London recently and the book is available (the paperback doesn't have the Arabel & Mortimer in a red wagon cover) or alternatively it's available from amazon.co.uk

Product Description

Young Arabel's life is changed forever when her father, a taxi driver, brings home an injured bird he finds in the street. This wacky raven eats everything in sight, answers the telephone by squawking "Nevermore!" and causes chaos wherever he goes--but Arabel loves her new feathered friend, whom she names Mortimer.
This is the first volume of Arabel and Mortimer's adventures, brightened with hilarious illustrations by Quentin Blake.

All around an astounding raven bird trail mounted rubber stamp new and well worth the price. Awesome raven bird trail mounted rubber stamp new of cost-effective money strongly recommended. This stamp-a-ma-jig is a very helpful item, it makes stamping with wooden stamps a breeze, or not it’s the class of item that appears unnecessary unless you start to use it. helps you to stamp more accurately, and is basic to use. Considering The Fact That all this, every in its own way is the bird world’s jackdaw of all trades. They are unhealthy predators themselves, and will raid unprotected bird nests. The generic caw, caw, caw of the crow is elegant when compared to the raven’s wooden wonk, wonk, wonk croaking sound. the difficulty with this form of stamps is that low spots finally advance on the inkpad making the stamp image hard to read. you manually press the stamp onto the inkpad, then provoke the stamp image onto the paper.

What Could Change- This is the most pointless position to try and figure out a starter for, both Dickson and Pitta will play comparable minutes so which one is the starter is really irrelevant. What Might Change- Reid is the current starter but i get the feeling that not only did the Ravens FO think they got a complete steal out of Osemele in the second round, but that they were extremely impressed with him during rookie camp. This might be the better long term decision anyway because when Bryant McKinney moves on it would be surprising if the Ravens didnt use Reid at RT and move Oher over to the left. That means that using Reid at LG this year would likely mean 4 of the 5 positions on the OL would change next year(LT, LG, C, RT) with only Yanda staying at his position instead of just moving 3 guys(LT, RT, C). What Might Change- Doss has been penciled in since the Ravens cut ties with Lee Evans but the recent signing of Jacoby Jones(2 years 5. Jones brings speed, ability and experience to the position without being used up like the last few free agent (or trade) WRs the Ravens have signed. the Ravens brought in a coupl UDFAs at the position but the only guy with a real roster shot is Chad Deihl and even he wont challenge Leech. he has trimmed down in the offseason and the Ravens gave him his “fatty” bonus which means he is in shape. What Might Change- Boldin will remain the no. 1 WR by name on the depth chart but i expect defenses to treat Torrey Smith as the no. 1 WR in most games next season. What Might Change- Allen has been penciled in as the Starter since Ricky Williams announced his retirement but Pierce is a better player. What Might Change- Barring an injury McKinney is the starter. What Might Change- Like Flacco, Rice is an absolute lock barring an Injury or in Rices case a possible holdout. Current Starter- Ray Rice. Current Starter- Bryant McKinney.
