Ultimate Reggae Rocks
Just wanted to say that I just got the "Ultimate reggae Collection" today. I opened up the jewel case and beheld a shining gold CD--the CD graphics look great by the way! I've only listened to half of the songs on the album and so far I am impressed. Jimmy Cliff's " The Harder they come" has absolutely the best track intro ever. There is a whole slew of classic reggae artist's on the album : Junior Murvin, Dennis Brown and Beenie Man just to name a few. If you like reggae then this is the album to get.

Good stuff cheap? Great stuff free!
Some big hits with no dent in the pocket. Sweet.Perfect's Hand Cart Bwoy being my favorite of this batch. The Buju tune is a big and lively affair recorded right before his unjust incarceration to Texas. The ever controversial Vybz and his declaration that he skin bleaches with Cake Soap. (Himself imprisoned on suspicion of murder!) Of course the Beenie Man and Fambo smash I'm Drinking/ Rum & Red Bull blew up all over R&B charts world-wide.Old fashioned styled roots is delivered faithfully by I-Octane (a star to watch), Jah Cure (released from prison on a possession charge), the much loved Richie Spice and the Bobo chanter Anthony B voices over a classic track.Mavado seems to be mellowing out and Serani gives us his usual version of a Jamaican Usher. Established superstar (by Jamrock standards anyway) Shaggy helps Hezron reach for the charts.Mr Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaacs, drops another lover's rock track. Tad's is a serious producer's label and has partnered up...

Isaacs was a giant of Reggae this is a clean simple example of his work. He has much more music to try. [song title] is owned by AOL.Anthony B. (Keith Blair) and Tosh are next with Sleeping In The Rain. Another old style sounding descriptive simple lyrics and backing tune. Song title features throughout the song. Singer doing a little more. Not bad.Green Grass by Jah Cure. Man with a history providing a more intense reggae experience. Vocal rich, strong song suits Jah Cure's persona. Nice song.Track 4 I-Octane with My Life. Cool modern up beat song. Chatty with neat lyrical and musical hooks. Nothing fancy like it.Buju Banton plays Time & Place. Hugely successful reggae singer with more than average amount of notoriety in his life. This song rocks...

Still Valuable Resource
Whoah!Don't be so quick to throw this on the trash heap. There aren't many reggae guides, this one copyrighted 1996 is still valuable. It works very well with the allmusic guides and the Rough Guide. It is a good cross reference. It also identifies other comps where an artist work may be found. It is a good price. If you are serious about reggae, or just beginning it is still valuable for learning and seraching.

Product Description

Reggae is Jamaica's only indigenous music, and although the island has a population half the size of London it is the world's third-largest exporter of music. This book details the history of reggae both in Jamaica and in its two other main centres, New York and London, and selects the best buys on CD, covering about 200 acts and over 500 albums. Arranged chronologically, the book takes readers from the evolution of Jamaican R&B into ska, through the rise of rasta and roots reggae in the Seventies and the death of Bob Marley in 1981, up to the emergence of dance-hall reggae, reggae/rap and ragga. Product Description

Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, the Itals, the Ethiopians-they all dropped dazzling proverbs into their best known reggae tunes.

"What come bad in the morning, can't come good in the evening."

"They love to give you a basket to carry water."

"The harder the battle be, ago sweeter the victory."

In Reggae Wisdom: Proverbs in Jamaican Music Swami Anand Prahlad looks at the contexts and origins of these proverbs, using them as a cultural sheet music toward understanding the history of Jamaican culture, Rastafari religion, and the music that is that culture's worldwide voice.

Prahlad's fieldwork in Jamaica is extensive. For him, the study of Jamaican sayings and music is not only an academic endeavor. It is also a personal and poetic exploration. Prahlad says, "I am writing not only as a folklorist but also as a member of the international reggae community, a group of people around the globe who look to this music for its joy, wisdom, and strength."

His unique, groundbreaking study argues that contemporary reggae artists are self-styled Rastafari priests for an international community of listeners and devotees. These "warrior/priests" serve as educators, healers, prophets, advisers, and social critics. Their proverbs become sources of strength and inspiration for members of the reggae community.

Several chapters in Reggae Wisdom offer important insights into Rastafari ideology, the history of reggae, the life and folk culture of Jamaican communities, and the recording scene that gave rise to roots reggae. One chapter, based on the author's fieldwork in Jamaica, considers the use of proverbs by ordinary individuals in Jamaican society. Other chapters focus on proverbs used by musical artists such as Bob Marley. Chapters also explore the contexts of album cover art, promotional materials, concert venues, and performance styles and conventions.

As Prahlad says, "What better way to enter this rich and powerful, eclectic world of sound and sense than through the magical world of proverbs?"

Swami Anand Prahlad is an associate professor of English and anthropology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is the author of African American Proverbs in Context (University Press of Mississippi). Top to learn more
