School is in session and Soca 101 gets an A+ !!!
This is an excellent record for neophytes to soca and calypso and those of us who grew up with it. For the inexperienced, originally, calypso was considered to be the more socially concious form of the music with stinging social commentary with soca being classified as more of party and 'wuk up' music. As time has progressed and the purists are no longer in dominance the distinction has blurred and the words are used interchangeably. That said, this album is excellent with hits that predate the Soca Gold Series which started in the the late 90's. This album includes out and out party hits from the classic Longtime to Balance Batty even the seminal hit Hold Ya Bam Bam by the Bajan Speedy which heralded in extremely short simple verses with a driving americanised (almost hip hop) base and even a 'true calypso' by the Mighty Sparrow . This is a terrific album and takes you back to the early to mid 90's when calypso was now gaining international exposure outside of those who had emigrated...

With selections from their Groovy-Soca-Island-Pop-Caribbean music repertoire, the band consisting of brothers Riad , Jon, Hans and Kees Dieffenthaller, Mario Callender, Robert Persaud and their dynamic QME dancers collided in the color and lights... The night’s host, Crystal Cummings held her own, while early warm up was executed by New York’s young progressive sound of Caribbean music, Sounds 4 Life and System Lords International. But the night would not be complete without Kees’ normal antics of bringing on a voluptuous fan for his big ting small ting segment. Shorblu Events and Big & Strong have shifted the paradigm of soca entertainment in NYC. With screams at the highest decibels and soca fanatics in their blissful state the action began on a high. No longer will you solely find your Soca celebrities in Brooklyn and at venues not worthy of the caliber of their celebrity and craft.

If you ask anyone, soca fan or not, whatever the event, when soca music starts to play, the energy and the vibe of the crowd changes to what one could describe as pure madness (Jamishness. In Trinidad however, based on what I’m told, while the musical range is much wider than during carnival, soca gets far more airplay as compared to Jamaica. The cornerstone of any good fete/party is the music. Maybe it’s the music. As a result of this, you see all the post carnival fetes in Trinidad that you DON’T get to go to. Having experienced this quite a lot recently, this got me thinking, what’s the difference between a ‘fete’ and a ‘party’. At the end of the day though, I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has partied extensively in both places that doesn’t agree that a fetes can get crazier, wilder, and way more fun than most parties here in Jamaica…or anywhere else for... In Trinidad, people buy tickets for parties way in advance. For the most part in this humble blogger’s opinion, parties never quite reach the same level of fun and freedom that fetes in Trinidad seem reach on a ‘regular’ basis. Here in Jamaica, almost everyone buys their tickets the day before, or the day of the event. The people seemed to care about nothing but but having fun, dancing, drinking, and enjoying the few hours they have at the fete…pure Jamishness. Very few people buy their tickets weeks in advance. After seeing the photos from josie’s jamishness it became pretty clear to me that the vibe at some of these post carnival fetes is pure, unmoderated fun and madness.
