Stables Paddocks and Tack Rooms
As an equestrian, I see alot of stables, tack rooms etc...but nothing prepared me for the beauty that this book shares with it's lucky reader. Beautiful, exhilarating, peaceful, aisles of horse "homes" for those lucky enough to be a part of. Not your old lovely traditional cobwebbed barn here -these stables are magnificent...the cabinetry woodwork is masterfully applied and the outcome is nothing short of the best. The best of materials and beauty go hand in hand and the reader is taken on a journey down a path he will enjoy forever. This is a must for all equestrians and hopeful equestrians...even for the sheer artistry of this book, it's a must have for me!

I gave this to a friend who absolutely loved it.
Very nicely photographed stables. Many part of landmark estates. I have a friend who has horses and gave it to them for Christmas. Now we are planning a trip to see one to the stables in the Spring.

Product Description

From the private to the historic to the state-of-the-art, a lavish tour of some of the most notable stables in the country. A celebration of horses and their "lodgings," this exquisite book covers horse country across the United States—from the East Coast to the Bluegrass, the prairie and mountain ranches, and to the Pacific Coast—and traces the origins of twenty-five stunning stables, from their vernacular beginnings in the early nineteenth century to the contemporary designs of today. Included are a farm in the countryside near Saratoga Springs, New York, which bears an 1830s-constructed main barn that originally housed draft horses and now accommodates retired race horses turned polo ponies, and a world-renowned Arabian horse-breeding farm in Santa Ynez Valley, California, that resembles a spa and country club with Mediterranean-style architecture and landscaping and has in the stable courtyard a stone fountain reminiscent of the ubiquitous waterworks in Moorish palaces. Uniquely spectacular, each selection is a reflection of its regional heritage. Featuring all-new color photography, Stables showcases the best of America’s diverse equine homes—a must-have for any horse or architecture enthusiast. Top to learn more

The pictures are amazing, the stables exotic. This book is different in a sense that it offers horse lovers a chance to see not only beautiful pictures of horses but gorgeous images of breathtaking and pristine stables, many with exquisitte and unique architecture. Information is presented from a unique perspective to those who love the majestic. Good price too ... here at Amazon. I originally saw the book listed for 40 dollars in a catalog and was willing to pay that price, but did an Amazon search and got it for much less.

Spectacular Accommodations for Prize Horses
And I thought that people spent a lot of money on houses. Then again, with horses of the caliber being housed here, I suppose the cost of the Ultimate Horse Barns being shown here isn't significant after all. You could build nearly any of them for say $4 to $5 million. Needless to say these are not little sheds just to keep the horse out of the rain. The buildings included here range from new construction to buildings that are well over a hundred years old. Many of these buildings are part of institutions such as the University of Vermont, the Kiwanis Club of West Toronto. Some belonged to the rich and famous, such as Vanderbilt. Some are working horse farms, but with a specialty in breeding or training high end horses.Note though that these are working barns. There are horses here, horses being groomes, trained, or like 'Bailey' on page 125 looking out of his stall as if to say, 'OK, it's morning, where's my breakfast.'

Ultimate Horse Barns
As a lover of horses and pictoral books on design, I have been looking for this type of book on horse barns for quite some time. This book contains a well thought out range of historic and new equine related buildings that have been beautifully photographed. The descriptive passages relating to each property give a very personal and charming look at the development, building process and use of the buildings. My interest in the book was primarily in the photographs which are not over powered by the text. I have purchased a number of other books on the subject but they do not compare to the quality of this publication. For horse lovers, would be barn builders and lovers of unique architecture, I highly recommend "Ultimate Horse Barns".

Product Description

Each of the eighteen masterpiece horse barns featured here is an innovative, beautiful structure that embodies the owners’ love and appreciation for horses. Author Randy Leffingwell has selected barns that possess exceptional qualities—a clever response to site challenges; meticulous attention to detail, equine health, and safety; or significant historical context. The purposes of the barns range from havens for private owners to successful breeding and training facilities to historical landmarks. Ultimate Horse Barns captures the architectural beauty of these stunning structures, as well as the love and passion the owners have for their horses.

The architecture of the stable.
Randy Leffingwell, Ultimate Horse Barns (Voyageur, 2006)Funny how things work out. I had originally planned on Ultimate Horse Barns being among the first books I read in 2008; it turns out it's the first book I finished in 2009. Still, it doesn't matter when you read this book, only that, if you're interested in architecture and that sort of thing, that you do.Leffingwell profiles fourteen of America's institutions' horse barns, ranging from the stately and classical (George Vanderbilt's Biltmore, in North Carolina) to the ultra-modern (California's Lucky Dog Ranch, whose barn wins architecture and design awards). Not just a book of photographs, this (which I have to admit is what I expected); Leffingwell offers us 8-10 pages of mixed photographs and text, giving us a quick overview of the barn's history, quotes from the people presently working there, a look at life in a working horse barn. And each one is different, which the reader might not expect...

Class Act
This is an excellently historical perspective by the now late Giles Worsley. Photographs by William Curtis Rolf capture a grand epoch in British architecture that was dedicated to this noble animal.

Product Description

Until the early years of the twentieth century, horses played an essential role in the agriculture, transport, industry, warfare, and sport of Britain. Their stables were practical shelters, but they were also more than that—in many cases a handsomely appointed stable served as much for the elegant display of horses as for their shelter. This beautiful book, illustrated with over one hundred specially commissioned photographs, focuses attention for the first time on the history, the variety, and the importance of stables in the British Isles.
Leading architectural historian Giles Worsley examines stables from the twelfth century through 1914, with special attention to country house stables—including those at Chatsworth and Kedleston—where the finest examples of stable design are found. Worsley discusses the factors that influenced the architecture of stables, whether owned by noblemen, great brewing companies, or the British army. Fascinating and lucidly written, The British Stable will appeal equally to those with an interest in horses, country houses, architectural history, or the special relationship between horses and the people of Britain.

The British Stable
I would have like to have seen photographs of the beautiful west front of the Chatsworth Stable. Also, some of the blueprints did not reproduce well. I think it would have been a more pleasing read if these were clearer. Instead of angles of the rooftops, it would have been nice to see the whole stable.

Medium Sized Stable
This is a great stable for your children. Sturdy, all wooden/no cardboard. Just the right size for storage. Doors slide open and closed...no hinges to break. My 5 year old loves it and so do I. Bought a different brand of stable last year...big name...very disappointing. It was made of 90% cardboard. Fell apart within days. It was not a Melissa and Doug Stable. This one is much better.
