Product Description

The New York Times Bestseller! The story of an outcast boy, his eccentric dad, and the scary underground world they discover through secret TUNNELS.

14-year-old Will Burrows has little in common with his strange, dysfunctional family. In fact, the only bond he shares with his eccentric father is a passion for archaeological excavation. So when Dad mysteriously vanishes, Will is compelled to dig up the truth behind his disappearance. He unearths the unbelievable: a secret subterranean society. "The Colony" has existed unchanged for a century, but it's no benign time capsule of a bygone era--because the Colony is ruled by a cultlike overclass, the Styx. Before long--before he can find his father--Will is their prisoner....

The Next Harry Potter? No. But the next "Tunnels"? Yes!
Barry Cunningham is best known for being the publisher who brought Harry Potter to the world by signing then unknown writer J.K. Rowling after she had been rejected by numerous other publishers.Since then, I'm sure he's been on the lookout for the "next big thing". Apparently the wait is over. In what's touted to be the "next Harry Potter", Mr. Cunningham has signed another unknown author, or rather pair of authors, Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams. Gordon and Williams had previously self-published their book as "The Highfield Mole". After what I'm sure was exhaustive marketing analysis, the book's title has been changed to "Tunnels".It's an unfair comparison to call a new book the "next Harry Potter". It's akin to saying a company is the "next Microsoft" or an up-and-coming band is the "next Beatles". There is no way any book will live up to the hype. And this book should not be compared to Harry Potter. It is its own animal. And it's pretty good...

Great Addition to the Tunnels Series!
This is a great addition to the Tunnels Series. I would recommend this good read to anyone who has read the prior Tunnels Series books and enjoyed them.

Great Series
Book #5 did not disappoint. There was a lot more action and losses and your learn a very creepy item about the Styx race. Can't wait till Book #6 comes out to find out what happens in the end.

So much fun!
Our 13 month old daughter loves this tunnel. When she enters the playroom she will find it collapsed and gesture to have it opened. I thought she'd get bored of this after a couple months because it is just a tunnel after all but she squeals in delight as she crawls through it. We'll throw a ball through it once in awhile to see it come out the other end. The cats will run through it. When you close the flaps it's a super fun game of hide and seek and it must be thrilling for 13 month old to break through it. I don't get it but it makes her so happy. It's very lightweight, easy to collapse and store and is very durable. The flaps are a nice touch too. I highly recommend it.

Good toy
My daughter loves this toy. We gave it to her for her first birthday and she wants to play with it several times a day. My only complaint is that the feet don't have weights, which I had pictured, so the tunnel rolls when she crawls in it.

Not the last book.
I'm currently reading this, and its amazing. If you go to tunnelsthebook.com, it states that Closer is NOT the last book in the series; book five will be called Spiral and then there will be one more book after that to conclude the series( 6 BOOKS TOTAL IN THE TUNNELS SERIES).I am extremely happy.

In the case of Dr. Burrows, he is ecstatic to discover a new world to study and spends his hours crawling over the bizarre pyramids, recording everything in his journal. His son, Will, is happy to help, grateful to be with him and even more thankful to spend some time alone with Elliot as she scouts out the area, finding food and shelter. However, their peace is about to end. Another group of people call this place home: Germans who sought a safe refuge during WWII and who have successfully created a new civilization called New Germania. A different ending
I love this series- great for kids. This book keeps you interested the whole way through with a great plot, action scenes and many different story lines. The ending of the book left me a little disappointed. I am not sure if the series will continue, but I was hoping for a better closing to all the story lines.

Deeper and Darker
I ordered a copy of Deeper from an UK Amazon third party (I couldn't wait for the US release). I was expecting a lot in the way of character and plot development and I wasn't disappointed. If you enjoyed Tunnels, you'll love this sequel! The numerous nail-biting chapters leave the reader nearly as exhausted as the characters in the story! As dark as the Colony is described in Tunnels, the world of the Deeps is even darker and more deadly. However, the harshness of the environment is not nearly as terrifying as the evil of the Styx. A fantastic series!!

Better than Tunnels
Let's get to the point from the off: Deeper is better than Tunnels. I guess the next question is: how is it better?First up there is the pacing. Deeper begins where Tunnels left off, with unlikely protagonist Will Burrows still on the trail of his lost, curator father, and finding his friend Chester on board the train that is transferring him to the subterranean hell-hole that is The Deeps. The authors have pulled out the stops in grabbing - and maintaining - the reader's interest; something sorely lacking in the first book.Secondly there is more depth given to some of the main characters, the relationship between Will and Chester moves from the one dimensional, making the reader care a little more for these two guys. Will's estranged birth-mother is also given some airtime; her personality - feral - based upon her fugitive lifestyle as she keeps one step ahead of the relentless Styx.To discuss plotline so soon after release would not be fair on...

Rivetting to the end.
I finished Deeper. It has to be one of the best books/series I have read. I truly enjoyed every page. Up in the night for "just one more chapter."The only thing I did not like was that it contained for me, so much violence. It was just a lot "darker" than the first book. I would place it more as a book for adults than kids. I would have no hesitations with the kids reading Tunnels, but I found this one just a little "deep" in those areas for them. With the torture, firing squads, killing, shooting of one of the kids, it was just a bit much for what I would let any of my kids read at this point in their lives (aged 3 - 16).Both Gordon and Williams have created a masterpiece here...it is truly EXCELLENT work, I SO can't wait for Free Fall.WWW.ClaireGuthrie.com

Customer Review

Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams continue to bring readers on a journey of a life time.
The story of Tunnels, Deeper, and now Freefall, are absolutely incredible. Here are my reasons why:1. I enjoy realistic fiction. I like when a stories science fiction seems to work within the books reality. These books try to do that as much as possible while maintaining a sense of fun adventure. There are so many things that happen in these books that if seem like it could happen if you believe in the science that the writers have come up with inside the context of the book. The writers are able to make amazing things seem believable and real.2. The bad guys are bad. The danger is real, and it feels real. I enjoy a story that when someone is shown to be bad, they continue to be bad. It isnt the typical story where some bad guy monologues on about how bad he is, than shoots a guy so you believe what he says. No, these books have realistic danger and violence not just for violence sake, but for deepening the characters throughout the book. There are some parts...
