A life-transforming book
I give my highest recommendation to this book. It was my first introduction to Vedic philosophy and I found it to be an excellent one. It explains the existence of the world and God in a way that accords with physics, string theory, and science despite the fact that this philosophy was developed 4,000 years ago or more. I was also fascinated to read about the connections with Buddhism and Christianity (in the footnotes).

Doorway to the Wisdom of Hinduism
Very few persons have taken the time to read the entire collection of writings comprising Vedantic wisdom. Some have read the Upanishads; many more the Bhagavad Gita. Very few have read these and the most ancient texts -- the four Vedas. In this very short book, Chatterji, a respected Indian scholar presents the "gist" of Vedantic wisdom. As the author says in his preface, his purpose was to present "...a concise and comprehensive statement as to how the Veda, the most ancient wisdom of India, regards life, its origin, purpose, and goal."In my opinion, he has succeeded admirably.

MUST READ FOR SEEKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've spent decades searching out truths about existence which made sense, gradually gravitating toward Hinduism. The ancient Vedas contained details about the physical nature of reality (corresponding to quarks and string theory etc) which only recently have started to be confirmed by modern science, due to the increasing power and sophistication of microscopes and telescopes. They were written thousands of years ago, allegedly revealed by "higher masters."This incredibly informative and concise book explains the deepest, most profound beliefs in clear simple terms. Beautifully written, there is nothing excessive about the prose. Every page contains important information explaining everything you need to know about God and life and the nature of the universe.Hinduism is the only major monotheistic religion on earth which acknowledges there is some truth in the others, and it is (to my mind) clearly the most objective and intelligent.Forget all the...

Product Description

How did the universe come into being? What is the nature of God? Of the human spirit? All who seek understanding will find this book an illuminating presentation of India's oldest and most profound religious and philosophical tradition. The Wisdom of the Vedas was first published in 1931 by Kailas Press under the title India's Outlook on Life. The Theosophical Publishing House published a second edition in 1973, and again in 1980 under the Quest imprint. The present 1992 edition was edited to reflect the modern use of inclusive language, and includes an introduction by Vedic scholar David Frawley. Mr. Frawley explains to the Western reader, "The Vedas are the original scripture or source teaching of the Hindu tradition, from which its many branches of Vedanta, Yoga, and Tantra have emerged through time, and to which they all look back with reverence." The Vedas are also "..the background relative to which the Buddhist religion evolved, and Buddhism also preserves many Vedic terms and practices." The study then, of the Vedas is important to understanding many different Eastern teachings. The author is from India, and has an unusual ability to frame the subtleties of Eastern thought for the Western world.

Ian Myles Slater on: Penguin's New Packaging
This is a re-issue, in Penguin's current format, and with new cover art, of the Penguin Classics volume previously listed by Amazon as "The Rig Veda: An Anthology of One Hundred Eight Hymns," published in 1981 (and as of October 2005, confusingly still available from Amazon), as translated and edited by Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty. That was her married name, since dropped, to the accompaniment of endless bibliographic and bookselling confusion. She is now known as Wendy Doniger, and is the "Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions" at the University of Chicago. (She has reported receiving mail with interesting combinations of names and titles.)Upon inspection, the "new edition" is revealed to be one of Penguin's cosmetic re-packagings to make the whole line uniform (and mostly quite handsome), and not one of the revised editions which have also been appearing as part of the same project. I offer here, with some modifications, my review of the...

Product Description

The earliest of the four Hindu religious scriptures known as the Vedas, and the first extensive composition to survive in any Indo-European language, The Rig Veda (c. 1200–900 bc) is a collection of more than 1,000 individual Sanskrit hymns. A work of intricate beauty, it provides unique insight into early Indian mythology and culture. Fraught with paradox, the hymns are meant “to puzzle, to surprise, to trouble the mind,” writes translator Wendy Doniger, who has selected 108 hymns for this volume. Chosen for their eloquence and wisdom, they focus on the enduring themes of creation, sacrifice, death, women, and the gods. Doniger’s The Rig Veda provides a fascinating introduction to a timeless masterpiece of Hindu ritual and spirituality. Top to learn more

The Only English Show in Town
Readers should be advised that I come to the topic of Indian culture with almost no background, having read only M. Hiriyanna, _Outlines of Indian Philosophy_, and what I can find about the Rig Veda on the Internet. Indeed, prior to my inquiry, I had thought "Agni" the name of an Indian guided missile! Readers should also know my prejudices: I hesitate with Oriental religions, for many of them in my country have been popularized by the religion of Californianity, and doubtless have been so distorted. I am also favorably prejudiced toward liturgical religions, and thus I've read about Shinto with some interest. I also hold the opinion that India will play no small role in the coming years; to inform oneself of her cultural roots is not time wasted. For anyone who wishes a contemporary and historical-critical abridgement of the Rig Veda, it seems that Doniger's work will do. Indeed, it will have to do, for I can find nothing in English equivalent to it, and Doniger...

Excellent Beginning
The Rig Veda is one of four major Vedas which comprise the foundation of Vedic or Hindu faith. The Rig Veda is composed of hymns to the gods, mostly Indra and Agni. The Penguin Edition is excellent, with plenty of footnotes that help explain the hymns. I've heard you would need a guru to fully understand the meaning of all of them. Nevertheless, as far as English translations go this is excellent.

Product Description

The Bagavad Gita is a conversation between Lord Krishna and the Pandava prince Arjuna taking place on the battlefield before the start of the Kurukshetra War. Responding to Arjuna's confusion and moral dilemma about fighting his own cousins, Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince, and elaborates on different Yogic and Vedantic philosophies, with examples and analogies. This has led to the Gita often being described as a concise guide to Hindu theology and also as a practical, self-contained guide to life. During the discourse, Lord Krishna reveals His identity as the Supreme Being Himself (Svayam Bhagavan), blessing Arjuna with an awe-inspiring vision of His divine universal form. Two words that are of paramount importance in grasping the Upanishads are Brahman and Atman. The Brahman is the universal spirit and the Atman is the individual Self. Differing opinions exist amongst scholars regarding the etymology of these words. Brahman comes from the root brh which means "The Biggest ~ The Greatest ~ The ALL". Brahman is "the infinite Spirit Source and fabric and core and destiny of all existence, both manifested and unmanifested and the formless infinite substratum and from whom the universe has grown". Brahman is the ultimate, both transcendent and immanent, the absolute infinite existence, the sum total of all that ever is, was, or shall be. The word Atman means the immortal perfect Spirit of any living creature, being, including trees etc. The idea put forth by the Upanishadic seers that Atman and Brahman are One and the same is one of the greatest contributions made to the thought of the world. The Rigveda is an ancient Indian sacred collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns. It is counted among the four canonical sacred texts of Hinduism known as the Vedas. Some of its verses are still recited as Hindu prayers, at religious functions and other occasions, putting these among the world's oldest religious texts in continued use. The Rigveda contains several mythological and poetical accounts of the origin of the world, hymns praising the gods, and ancient prayers for life, prosperity, etc. Top to learn more

A good, but flawed, collection
This is a wonderful collection of some of the key Hindu scriptures (Rg Veda, Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita) but it is not without its significant flaws: the Kindle version is disastrously (un)formatted, providing not even a table of contents which would allow one to skip to one or another of the three major sections. There is no attention paid to formatting and its effect on readability. My other primary complaint is the use of extremely dated translations. Not bad translations, mind you, but dated in much the same way that Fowler translations of Plato are dated. If you can move beyond that, which requires some effort but is not beyond the skill, I think, of an intelligent reader, you will be rewarded with some real gems of Indian sacred literature.

There are four Vedas, the Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. The Vedas are the primary texts of Hinduism. They also had a vast influence on Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Traditionally the text of the Vedas was coeval with the universe. Scholars have determined that the Rig Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas, was composed about 1500 B.C., and codified about 600 B.C. It is unknown when it was finally committed to writing, but this probably was at some point after 300 B.C.

The Vedas contain hymns, incantations, and rituals from ancient India. Along with the Book of the Dead, the Enuma Elish, the I Ching, and the Avesta, they are among the most ancient religious texts still in existence. Besides their spiritual value, they also give a unique view of everyday life in India four thousand years ago. The Vedas are also the most ancient extensive texts in an Indo-European language, and as such are invaluable in the study of comparative linguistics.

This edition of the Rig-Veda was translated by Ralph T.H. Griffith in 1896. It was the first complete English translation of the Rig-Veda, and is still used widely as a reference translation.--J. B. Hare Top to learn more

It is hardly surprising that this should be a significant issue in Advaita, whose teaching derives directly from the Vedas, because the major part of the Vedas deals with action. In Shankara’s time the idea that both action and knowledge were necessary in combination was a major issue, because Shankara was committed to the four ‘ Ashrama portion of the Vedas were useful in this respect. Since knowledge brings with it the understanding that I am not a doer, how could knowledge and action go together. But, at the appropriate stage in one’s life, when the key mental qualities have been attained and one has fulfilled the duties of householder, husband, father etc, then actions serve no further useful purpose. I, of course, being a Westerner – even one who knows quite a lot about Advaita – know virtually nothing about them. His books to date are: The Book of One (2003), extensively revised in 2010.
