Really holds moisture!
I added a cup of water to about a third of this bag to create a moist bed for some turtle eggs, and in a month, I've only had to add water once, and it hasn't rained once, so it's super dry here. I can't believe how well this stuff holds water! Top to learn more

Amazing Soil Conditioner
If you have never used vermiculite before and you live in an area with poor soil, then you are missing out. Vermiculite is a great 3-in-1 conditioner. Vermiculite is able to hold water and prevent draining, which is great if you live in an arid climate. It will also hold soil nutrients, and lastly, vermiculite has the property of exfoliation, where it expands and aerates the soil.Unfortunately, it's difficult to find vermiculite in bulk. The Hoffman Vermiculite contains 222 cubic inches of finely grained vermiculite. It is more useful for germinating seeds and potting than conditioning your entire garden.

Worth the search
Many think Vermiculite and Perlite are similar. They are not. For some reason Vermiculite is difficult to find locally and on the internet. Vermiculite retains moisture Perlite retains oxygen. Both are valuable and I use them in conjunction with great results. Try equal parts of both with worm castings for a great potting medium. Add some worm castings and the result is better than a miracle.

VERMICULITE IS GETTING HARDER TO FIND!
Unfortunately, because of some unfounded fears about the makeup of vermiculite, it is getting harder to find...which is a shame, since it is a useful additive to potting mixes. Unless you're planning to eat, smoke or inhale it (and you can always wear a dust mask when mixing soils!), I wouldn't worry about using it. It works great at keeping a potted soil mix friable and aerated...which is great for a plant's root system.

I just mixed up Mel's mix using this and it seems to work fine. After doing the calculations and comparing the volume of this product with other ingredients such as the peat moss, it appears each bag is about 1 cubic foot. Mixing this growing soil mix has been the most expensive part of my raised bed gardening project, but it makes a great growing medium by just looking at it.So one star off because the stuff is priced a bit on the high side.When I ordered mine it was eligible for Amazon Prime. Good quality vermiculite, coarse
I bought some vermiculite at a local nursery first, and it was terrible. The bag showed pictures of nice coarse vermiculite but when I got home I found it to be fine sand-like particles. This Espoma vermiculite from Amazon costs more but it is a high quality coarse vermiculite. Guess I'll order a few more bags from Amazon now that I've seen what the product actually looks like. I bought this to mix in equal amounts with vermiculite for a growing medium. Product works as expected in regards to aeration/water retention (when mixed with vermiculite), if you are going to use as your medium you definately want to use vermiculite with it as one procides the aeration you need and the other provides the water retention.Be advised, if you use products like these buy a little cotton mask to wear while you first get it set up....it can be harmful over time to breathe the dust they will put off....once you moisten it down that issue goes away.
