The day the CW killed Veronica Mars (no spoilers)
Today the CW officially cancelled the best show on television (understandably, some would say, due to abysmally low ratings). There lingers a chance that the series might be revitalized in a different form, but the hammer has officially fallen. Veronica Mars is unceremoniously over.Season 3 was the first (and last) season of the show to air on the fledgling CW network. It took a different approach to storytelling than seasons 1 and 2, featuring two separate mystery arcs and a number of one-episode mysteries, rather the season-long affairs for which the show had become known and loved. Despite the change, season 3 works as excellent, intriguing television. The writing is witty and the acting in sharp, as before. The creator of the show, Rob Thomas, once heard the series described as "Chinatown meets Heathers." That's a perfect description. I would say it also owes heavily to Twin Peaks. Chinatown happens to be my all-time favorite movie. I'm a noir junky, and...

Regardless of a mixed season, S3 DVD delivers on extras (finally!)
Heads-up: This review is for the S3 DVD set as a DVD set, and not an editorial about the quality of Season 3. (For the record, I'd give most S3 episodes a solid 4-stars) This review is more for the VM fans who don't need to be "sold" on the series, but are deciding whether to shell-out $45 for the DVDs, given that the last 2 DVD sets were pretty skimpy on the extras. The Season 3 DVD set, while it still doesn't have commentaries (not everyone is as chatty as Matt Groening and Co., I guess), it finally includes a few substantial behind-the-scenes extras, most notably, a 90-minute (or so) discussion with Rob Thomas, who walks us through clips and explains his choices. Very episode commentary-like, just more efficient-- you go through a lot of good clips from the whole season.Chapters from the RT commentary I especially liked were on favorite guest characters, favorite pairings (Veronica and her dad; VM and Logan; VM and Duncan was not included here,...

Kristen Bell, Francis Capra. Taking classes in the wealthy but corrupt college town, Veronica is a young PI-in-training who finds herself amid the sunshine, palm trees-and one mystery to solve after another. Her dad, a disgraced former sheriff, runs a detective business of his own. But will that help, or hinder, Veronica's efforts? 20 episodes on 6 DVDs. 2006/color/14 hrs/NR/widescreen Top to learn more

Equal parts Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Nancy Drew, Veronica Mars is smartly written and well-acted. This third and final season of the critically acclaimed (but viewer-challenged) series ends as all good shows should--by leaving viewers wanting more and wondering how their favorite characters will fare in the future. By now, our spunky heroine Veronica (played by the effervescent Kristen Bell) is a college student working on a degree in criminology. Though blond, pretty, and uber-smart, Veronica doesn't have an easy time fitting in to her new setting. The series focuses as much on her personal life this season as it does on the cases she is hired (and paid) to solve. Besides dealing with rapes, robbery, and other sordid crimes, Veronica has to clear her own name when she is accused of plagiarizing. She also gets involved in helping figure out who may have given a pregnant friend a pill that caused her to lose the baby. This year's guest stars include some stunt casting with Patty Hearst, who plays a wealthy woman who disappears during an event held in her honor. Unlike the first two years where Veronica focused on solving one major crime, this season features several story arcs. Perhaps it was the producer's way of trying to attract more viewers, but diehard fans may be turned off by the change, which provides a less cohesive storyline than in the past. All 20 episodes--which aired originally during the 2006-2007 television season--are included in this six-disc set. The collection also includes a cute gag reel and an informative bonus feature that includes insightful commentary from show creator Rob Thomas. --Jae-Ha Kim Top to learn more

Season 2 of the best show on television comes to DVD
Thank you Warner Home Video, for releasing the second season of my favorite television series in August instead of waiting until October as you did for Season 1.For those looking for the true heir to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in terms of a sharp script and snappy dialogue look no further than the UPN show Veronica Mars. Not since Sunnydale dropped into a deep chasm has television seen such a fabulous ensemble of talented young actors deliver such inventive dialogue in intelligent, darkly humorously directed fare. For me Tuesday nights became the most anticipated TV night of the week and I could not get enough of the show or its hot star Kristen Bell. It quickly shot up the rankings on my TiVo season pass where it now sits at number one and my Kristen Bell TiVo wish-list was set to auto-record so I would not miss any program in which she was featured. I remember the anger when my local UPN station decided to air a baseball game instead of one episode - never have...

A Great Show Only Gets Stronger
After solving her best friend's murder at the end of season 1, Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) swore off detective work. She was going to relax and enjoy her senior year. In fact, she's got a boring job serving coffee. Just your typical high schooler.Unfortunately, just when she thinks she's out, she's pulled back in. Firstly, on again off again friend Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) is accused of killing a PCHer. Then best friend Wallace (Percy Daggs III) is part of the group of starting athletes accused of steroid use.But worst of all is the bus crash. After a routine field trip, the bus the kids were riding in plunges over the side of a cliff, killing all on board. The rich kids had gotten off, so once again social status plays an issue. But worse yet, Veronica thinks it was intended to kill her. Was she the target or was there another sinister purpose? This show started off with a strong first season and only improved with this one. The best show on TV, with a second season even better than the first
With most television shows, the sophomore season is kind of key. That's when you can tell if the series has long-term potential to be one of the great classic shows, or if the first season will always be remembered as the only "true" season of what once was a good show. With this second season, "Veronica Mars" proves to be the former. While most of the sophomore efforts of the big hit shows that I've seen have been disappointing this season (the worst offenders being the ones on ABC, imo), "Veronica Mars" and NBC's "The Office" remain as two of the only exceptions. For those new to the show (and I hope there will be plenty of those, b/c the show still doesn't get the viewers it deserves), here's a quick, as-spoiler-free-as-possible, season 2 synopsis:With her best friend's true murderer finally behind bars thanks to her, 18-year-old detective Veronica tries to start her senior year by getting her life back to normal after the cataclysmic events of last year. As we learn in...

Kristen Bell, Percy Daggs III, Enrico Colantoni. Nothing holds back this high school student from helping her dad, a disgraced former sheriff, solve crimes in their wealthy town-even in the midst of her own personal trials and heartbreak. The second season of Veronica Mars showcases the series' crackling-sharp writing and topnotch acting of star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast. Veronica still struggles with the class wars in sunny Neptune, Calif., trying to find a balance between high school, love, helping her dad as a private eye, and doing the right thing. The ongoing thread of season 2 is the aftermath of a horrifying tragedy, and as Veronica and dad Keith try to find out what caused it, mysteries only compound. Shifty Sheriff Lamb, town powerbrokers, and various high-school cliques seem to undermine Veronica at every turn. Thankfully, Veronica has more chutzpah than Phillip Marlowe, and the side-of-the-mouth one-liners to match: "Well, actually," Veronica says dryly to a bad guy, "despite popular opinion, you really can't beat the truth out of someone." Some of the show's broad strokes echo the stellar Buffy the Vampire Slayer, yet Bell's Veronica doesn't need the supernatural to tackle a challenge. She's a real girl, conflicted, prickly, lovesick, yearning, sometimes even scared. As Veronica tries to solve the mystery, she must also handle her own heartbreaks, and the moral stumbles of those closest to her. Happily, she's got a great best pal, Wallace (the effervescent Percy Daggs III), and possibly the coolest, most understanding TV dad ever (Enrico Colantoni). The boxed set includes 22 episodes (many with deleted scenes), a behind-the-scenes mini-doc, a cute gag reel, and a short profile film, Veronica Mars: Not Your Average Teen Detective. You can say that again. --A.T. Hurley Top to learn more

UPN gives us one of the best new shows of the year
WARNING: SPOILERS!The 2004-2005 will hopefully go down as one of the most important seasons in recent television history, not because there was such a plethora of great new series-there weren't-but because it was the beginning of the end of the dominance of reality programming and the rebirth of the scripted television show. The two shows that are getting most of the credit for the sudden demise of the reality show are the two mega-hits on ABC, LOST and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, but I hope that UPN's lovely VERONICA MARS will get at least some credit. If LOST and VERONICA MARS are the face of things to come, rather than WIFE SWAP or THE SWAN, then the future for TV could be very bright indeed.Of all the series that were developed in the wake of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, VERONICA MARS hues most closely to the original (especially in Buffy's high school years) and is one of the best. [October 2005 addition: VERONICA MARS in its second season is highlighting the...

One of the best new shows this year!
I got hooked on Veronica Mars during the pilot, which I tuned to on a whim. I thought it was one of the best written hours of television I'd ever seen. While some of the "mystery of the week" episodes were stronger than others, I was impressed that the threads of the over-arching story were kept going throughout the season. The last 4 episodes of the season, where everything started to come together were gripping. I really loved this show and was so glad to see it renewed. I hope it comes out on DVD!

The Best Show to Come Out of Network TV in a Long, LONG time
Forget the high school set up, this is the smartest, most mature and complex show to come out of network TV since the glory days of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", the early seasons of the "X-Files", "My So-Called Life" and the first season of "Twin Peaks". And sorry "Lost", you know I love you, but the Most Compelling Mystery On TV award goes to the cute-as-a-button petite blond with the smart mouth and the attitude. This is one of the few shows that are able to combine style and substance, drama and comedy and thrills, chills and character-driven stories successfully and intelligently. Most every single episode is tightly packed with engaging storylines, crisp dialogue, fun mini-mysteries with outcomes that are hard to guess and tantalizing little clues that keep the viewer on the edge of their seat and intrigued by the season-long whodunit. There is no fat, there are no fillers and there so much going on that even the awesome songs carefully selected for each scene serve a...

The smartest high school drama since Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars is The O.C. as penned by Raymond Chandler. Veronica (Kristen Bell, Deadwood) is Nancy Drew by way of Lauren Bacall, while Neptune makes Peyton Place look like Mayberry. The first season begins in the aftermath of a dizzying array of cataclysmic events: Her best friend, Lilly (Amanda Seyfried), was murdered, her sheriff father was fired over his handling of the case, she was sexually assaulted, and her mother left. Since then, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni, Just Shoot Me) has become a private eye and drafted Veronica as his assistant. She may lack Buffy's physical prowess, but the "tiny blonde one" turns out to have a special talent for sleuthing. In the wake of her sophomore year, the popular crowd abandoned Veronica--even boyfriend Duncan (Teddy Dunn), Lilly's brother. (Hence the theme song: "We Used to Be Friends.") Veronica is on her own until she meets Wallace (Percy Daggs III), the only student unfamiliar with her past, unlike Duncan's sarcastic pal, Logan (Jason Dohring), one of her more ardent foes. He was Lilly's boyfriend and his father is movie star Aaron Echolls (Harry Hamlin). By the end of her junior year, Veronica and Logan will make their peace, but it won't be so easy to win over the school--let alone the town. Throughout the season, Veronica will solve several mysteries both big and small--including the murder of Lilly Kane. But a few questions remain. For instance, at the end of the season finale, Veronica opens the door to greet an unseen visitor with "I was hoping it would be you." So who was it? Fortunately, UPN renewed the critically acclaimed (if ratings challenged) teen noir and that tantalizing question will be answered in the second season premiere. --Kathleen C. Can't Help But Love It
For my three-hundredth review, I am pleased to give "Veronica Mars" five glowing stars. I will try my best to keep this review short, because I tend to gush when I talk about this show at length; so keeping things simple seems to be the best way to go about this.THE PLOT: Veronica Mars is an intelligent young girl (Junior in High School when the series beings, Freshman in college when it ends) with a Private Detective father, a bad reputation, and a whole mess of ambition. She often takes on her own PI duties, sometimes looking into small things like petty theft for classmates, but she also gets serious when a bigger case hits close to home. The majority of VM episodes are standalone, but both of the first two seasons also form bigger stories, in that you can watch an episode by itself, but watching a whole season forms a bigger, coherent story line. The third season, instead, is divided into three sections, the first two being shorter mystery arcs, and the final five...

Great series...WAY over priced.
Let me just say the first season of this show is fantastic! The second season lost it's focus, and the third was just frustrating. You should buy this series...just not in this set.The list price and amazon price is about $75 too much! Seeing how you can buy it at target once and a while for $19 a season. $160 is WAY too much. Who ever picked it at that list price should be fired. $89-99 is more reasonable.

5 stars for the show, 1 star for the price
This is not a special collector's edition like the ones recently put out for Stargate SG-1 or the X-Files. This is only a bundle of the show's three season DVD sets. As it is you will pay about forty dollars more for these three seasons in a bundle than you would if you just bought the three seasons separately.I hate to compare this show to Buffy, but it does merit comparisons in several ways - the snappy dialogue, a teenage girl as resourceful heroine, an overall season-long story arc, plus each individual episode has a mystery to be solved that is pretty much stand-alone. The final comparison is that Veronica Mars, like Buffy, seemed to lose something once Veronica went to college. Buffy had three great seasons before this happened, Veronica Mars only two. Since Veronica Mars didn't have the sizeable ardent core fan base and surrounding mythology that Buffy had when it went through its troubled college transitional season, and ratings were quite bad during its third...

Run Time: 842 minutes Veronica Mars: Season 3 Veronica Mars: The Complete First Season The smartest high school drama since Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars is The O. C. as penned by Raymond Chandler. Season 3 really saw a growth in the characters, dealing with some even darker issues than the last two seasons, and just portraying the bittersweet dealings of life, so poignantly and with such grace. ) Yes, season three was different from the first two, and maybe it wasn’t the same degree of quality due to the network asking the writers to change it up to bring in more viewers… regardless, Veronica Mars was, hands down, better than most of... If I had to live through life only having the chance to watch one show, Veronica Mars would be it, and I feel humbled to have seen this show for its three seasons. Throughout the season, Veronica will solve several mysteries both big and small–including the murder of Lilly Kane. Since then, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni, Just Shoot Me) has become a private eye and drafted Veronica as his assistant.

The correct progression was to leave High School after season 3. This led to the absolutely amazing season 5, the poignant and musical season 6, and the epic season 7. Season Three is so perfect that, whenever I rewatch, it’s always hard to move on. . “Dawson’s Creek” : These producers didn’t shoehorn the entire cast into the same school, sending Jen, Joey, Dawson and Pacey in four different but geographically... “Veronica Mars” : Rob Thomas’s teenage sleuth show is one of my all-time favorites. Conveniently, Mac, Veronica, Logan, Dick and Wallace all attended the same school: the fictional and conveniently located Hearst College. The fourth season is perhaps the worst with the class and dorm-oriented plot lines being the weakest. But I only own the first two seasons and when I push it on friends and loved ones, I tell them not to bother with the third. Better the show had ended with graduation and Logan and Veronica’s SECOND reconciliation rather than making us endure a third and fourth. Not to mention 5 seasons of ANGEL as a direct result. Word on the internets today is that despite plunging ratings and flagging interest, Fox has renewed “Glee” for a fourth season. Season four Buffy did not have the strongest arc (the initiative / Adam storyline.
