Word 2003 Step by Step. Finally, a manual that helps!
I've been using Word 2000 for years. I was finally able to get most of thr functions I needed to work, but it was a "try & try again" approach. The on line manual is helpful, IF you know what questions to ask. And most software has features you might not be aware of, and therefore can't use.The Word 2003 Step by Step manual is wonderful. You can find what you want to do easily in the index, then get step by step instructions on how to do the project. You can just read the index and/or manual, and learn of the many features available that you never knew existed, and so hadn't tried to use. It's like having an instructor on hand, any time you want one. I expanded my use of Word greatly, just by learning about new features, on learning how to do things I knew existed, but couldn't figure out how to access.I highly recommend this book.

Has been very helpful.
Several years back, probably more than ten, I read one of the "for Dummies" books. It's been so long ago, I don't even remember what the book was about, but I do remember that I was very disappointed in it. For that reason, I've always steered away from this series of books. However recently, I found myself in need of WORD 2003 FOR DUMMIES by Dan Gookin. I have to admit that I have been shocked by just how good this book is.I'm not a techie person by any means, and that makes me perfect this book. It is written in easy to understand terms and takes otherwise complex issues down to their basic level of simplicity. So far, I have turned to this book maybe half a dozen times and in each case, have mastered the subject with little difficulty. If you're like me, this may not be a book that you read through, but it is certainly one that you will reference as the need occurs. To that end, I am very satisfied with this book. I have certainly changed my mind about this...

Essential Reference Book for Everyone with a PC
I got a promotion with added responsibility after updating several company-wide manuals and procedural handbooks, thanks to "Word 2003 for Dummies" because this book helped me construct elaborate and professional-looking documents. I was able to teach myself how to insert a table of contents and an index within about an hour, and I was also able to construct documents with different headers and footers pertaining to specific units. This book literally saved my job. :)

I wasn't sure which Word 2003 book to buy because there are a lot to choose form. So I checked around to see which author could help me the best. No contest. I had no idea how many awesome computer books Dan Gooken had written! The best new thing about Word 2003 has to be what you can do with smart tag now. It's great to be able to customize them.

Just keeps getting better!
I was lucky enough to get Office 2003 before the official release date. Microsoft has done a nice job on the interface. Everything looks cleaner, and it will pop up useful sidebars on the righthand side (such as the clipbook for pasting items you have copied, help items, etc). Another thing about the interface is that it meshes nicely with Windows XP themes. It will take a soft blue color when paired with Windows XP's default theme. All of the bars will be blue. This is nice on the eyes. The same goes with silver - everthing will match. As for upgrading to 2003 from older versions... this is a tough call. If you have Word XP, I would be hard pressed to tell you to upgrade. Even Word 2000 does a fine job. I don't know if there are enough new bells and whistles in this to warrant upgrading. If you like to have the newest of everything however, this is the best word processor out there for PCs.For those of you on a tight budget, thers is hope. As good as Microsoft...

Justified Upgrade for some, but not all
Word 2003 is more powerful than ever. Unfortunately, most of the new features are aimed primarily towards large business. As a result, many end-users simply won't need them (or be able to use them). The users who will benefit most from upgrading are corporate users or users purchasing bundles with new PCs. Pros:Instant Messaging support is now integrated with Office applications. However, only MSN messenger is used. Users who predominantly use Yahoo, trillian, jabber, or ICQ will not find any utility in this feature, without signing up for a messenger account. The user interface has changed for the better, and matches the Windows XP interface better. Personally, I like it. Also, fonts are rendered better, and consequently documents will look better on laptops (no more jagged edges). The Reading Layout feature splits the text into a two column format for easier reading (think newspaper). If you have Microsoft Server and SharePoint services installed on your...

The famously broken bits are still broken.
Pointing out Word's faults is like pointing out the pyramids are crumbling--it may be true, but they're still going to be there. Still, Word's Master Document "feature" is still the surest way to document corruption. And you'd better track down the internet page that gives detailed instructions on the convoluted way you need to set up heading numbering if you want to keep your Word documents from corrupting. And so on. I doubt anyone cares. Word is a fact of life, no matter if it's constantly falling to bits. The new version's XML support does give you a new path to recovering a corrupted document: saving to XML and then converting that file back to Word format has saved me some time on a couple of occasions. We use Word because we have to. On those occasions when I don't have to, I use WordPerfect, because I like to actually produce things, not spend my time dealing with software problems.

Excellent Resource
I use Word 2003 every day. But I still don't know everything. When I have even the slightest problem, I don't have time to look through those thick and wordy text books. This little book is a simple yet comprehensive desk reference book. The directions are hands-on and user friendly. The text is readable and well organized. The visuals are clean and fully support the instructions. I have learned some very useful tips and shortcuts that have saved me a lot of time and frustration. This book is an excellent resource for both office and home.

A Great Way to Get Started
These Visual guides are great books for the beginner to get started with a software package. They have an absolute minimum of words and are profusely illustrated with a half dozen or so pictures, drawings, and illustrations on each page. About the only words are the captions to the visual aids. For common programs like Word this technique works really well, not only with children, but with old guys like me. These are beginners level books, and as you get further along in using the software you'll want something more complex. But if you start with this book, in a couple of hours you'll be word processing enough to at least understand the concepts and enough to navigate yourself around the Microsoft Word screen. This book covers the 90% or more of the things you'll want to do using Word. This includes things as complex as tables, inserting pictures and so on. It does not include things as complex as using VBA. It's a great way to get started quickly.

One hundred and twenty four thousand, nine hundred and nine American servicemen lay interred forever in twenty four cemeteries on foreign shores and there they will stay, never to return to America. They’re out there, right now, walking the bitter broken mountains of Pakistan, patrolling the terrible destroyed streets of Iraq, standing the long watch on and below and above the seas, in the fetid festering jungles of South America, in the dry... And there are those who no longer fight, no longer struggle, no longer remember. They fight the demons of Vietnam and Beirut and Mosul and Firebase Alpha and a thousand other battles you have never heard of. Many are already dead, killed in action, only they no longer have the wit to know it and so they haunt the streets of... And there are those who no longer serve, no longer wear the uniform, but they still fight. Their grandparents came of age in the 1950s, and if you were white and of the new middle class, what a wondrous peaceful golden age it was – unless you happened to be one of those who went off to the Forgotten War. For some of our children, the most recent generation and the ones just now reaching the age of reason and awareness, they have never known an America not at war. They lay entombed in the soil of foreign nations, at Normandy, at Tunis, at the Ardennes, at Brookwood and Cambridge, at Flanders and Lorraine, at Manila, Mexico City, in the Netherlands, and the Somme and many other places whose names most... Others, well, their bones are myriad and they litter the sea floor beneath all the oceans of the world or are lost in the jungles and deserts on all the world’s continents, their resting places unknown and unremembered. Today there are those who instead of picnicking with their familiars, instead of working in their yards or enjoying the day, will be patrolling the dark and dangerous parts of this world.
