One of the best field recorders out there
Just like the customer above me, I have a fairly early model (serial 2211). I don't imagine them having any revisions or anything, because this unit is really solid. Let me start by saying that this device should not be considered a Mic in its own right. Sure, it has two condenser microphones stuck on top to record in stereo, but I wouldn't use these mics in any studio unless I had nothing better. This unit is for those people who want to record in the field, and be able to capture 4 tracks of audio in a handheld device.First, the build quality. Obviously Zoom took a lot of criticism to heart from their first H2 and H4 models. The H4n sports a "rubberized" hardshell design that's easy to grip, and seems to stand up well to surface scratches. (Mind you, the rubber texture can attract greasy fingerprints which can get annoying if you're a gadget freak like me). The top of the unit where the mics are is metal. There is some plastic on the unit, but definitely better designed...

Impressive with minor flaws
In looking for a portable handheld recorder for scratch tracks and samples, I weighed the benefits of a few of the handhelds available today and settled on the H4n. The other recorders on my short list were the Edirol R-09 and Sony PCM-D50, and also the H4. So far the H4n hasn't disappointed.I settled on the Zoom H4n for a couple of reasons:1) 1/4" and XLR inputs with phantom power - Very handy for throwing a mic on a kick and snare, and the H4n will record those plus the internal condensor simultaneously, which is perfect to get the rest of the drum kit for some quick loop scratch tracks.2) More geeked out features than the others - They are not needed but still fun to have. know your limmits
i've not had time to really delve into all the features, or even use it for the purpose for which i bought it (audio for film), however what i have played with sounds fantastic. for someone like me,(pro) i don't find it too complicated to get around and it's fairly intuitive. with that said, if you're new to audio of don't need bells and whistles, i'd look into a 'lesser version'. if you know what you're doing and want an exceptionally good sounding and flexible recorder, this is your unit. i have found it to be very handy just to have lying around to grab for a quick "idea" catcher for songwriting.it is (or at least seems to be ) a sturdy unit, solid feeling, not flimsy. but buy a better carrying case and an extra sd card for more storage.my only beef if not with the recorder itself, but with the cubase le software that was bundled with it. NOT intuitive, NOT easy to set up, NOT as easy to use as they would have you believe, but the customer service from steinberg was...

Absolutily LOVE this thing!
AMAZING! Cant say enough. Buy one and be amazed with the quality and performance of this little thing. This is a great package with $50 or more in extras for the same price. I use this unit with my Canon 5D mark II to add awesome soundtracks to my movies/videos. FYI: For the open rear channels on this unit do a search for shotgun microphone "HTDZ HT-81" or "14.37 inch Professional Shotgun Microphone" and buy 2. You will find them out there for $32 shipped a peace! They sound comparable if not better than my Rode Videomic! So save some money and search them out.

Great prosumer/low-end pro tool fpr aidop
I offered to record video at a conference as a favor to a friend, and was looking into how to bring audio into my camera. I saw some camera-specific boxes which would take XLR from the board and bring it into the camera, but got the H4n instead, since it can work standalone and as a camera input adapter.The best recommendation for me was that the pro audio guys at the venue were using H4n as part of their own gear to make audio-only recordings -- a business run by someone who has been doing audio recordings at shows and concerts for decades. I felt like I had made the right choice -- and conveniently he showed me the optimal settings to use as well. This is a very versatile tool for all audio recording needs -- a high quality interview recorder, a concert recorder, and an audio solution for shooting video on the Canon 7D or a variety of camcorders.It's not cheap, but a great value.

Nicer than expected
I am very pleased with the remote control for my H4n. All the controls I need are present, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are LEDs on the control to indicate operating mode, one of which changes color when the record level is too high. Very nice! Also unexpected (but appreciated) was the extension cord that came with the control. My only concern with this product is its cord, which appears a bit flimsy. Time will tell if the cord is durable enough for my application.

compared to marantz's remote, more features lower cost
If you have a H4n, this is a must have for twenty bucks.It mimics most of the front panel keys and can make level adjustments by remote (Marantz is just a record, mark, and pause 3 button remote - to stop you must go back to the front panel or else add your own stop switch and resistor, instructions are included in the manual to expand its abilities)I like the full compliment of indicators and switches on zoom. It uses a 4 conductor 2.5mm TRRS plug and since those are harder to find than hens teeth they include a generous extension giving you easily 15 feet and probably pushing 20 between both the remote and the extension.Sure there are features that could not be put into the remote like a battery life indicator, but overall it does more and costs less than other remotes I own. The 4 conductor 2.5mm TRRS extension is worth having in your cable collection all by itself!My only complaint about zoom is that their amplifiers are noisier...

Relatively Expensive But Necessary
This remote is nothing special other than it works with the Zoom H4n recorder. The H4n recorder is an amazing multi-track recorder that can record mono, stereo or surround sound music of musical instruments or other sound source. It is sold at a very good price compared to its capabilities. However, the H4n has the unavoidable fault of having sensitive microphones that pick up all sounds, including those sounds of pushing bottons on the recorder. I believe this remote control should have been made part of the H4n package instead of being a relatively high cost accesory. The remote works well and does eliminate the noises caused by touching the recorder, but you still need to be careful that movement of the wire when using the remote is not picked by the recorder's sensitive microphones. If the remote were added as part of the recorder package for $10, I am sure people would still buy the recorder at the higher price. I am just not happy about paying $40 for an accessory that is...

Zoom H4n digital recorder + remote
This unit sounds amazing,and it does everything; Great stereo recordings, use the built-in mics and/or your own and/or plug in a combination of mics. You can even run mics and two line inputs from the board or straight from instruments.It's a multi-track recorder with digital effects and dynamics proccessing. Use it as a card reader.The big thing is; REALLY EASY TO USE. VERY INTUITIVE.Buy the remote too, it's well worth it. The remote even has a green l.e.d. that flashes yellow and then red as you approach clipping levels. That's incredibly handy when you're trying to play an instrument and run the recorder too. You can also change recording levels from the remote along with transport controls etc.. etc...Last but not least it was a killer package deal from Amazon and Unique Squared. The headphones even sound great!

Great Package
This was a really nice package deal. The H4n itself has really impressed me, you can actually adjust the XLR inputs individually, just RTFM (read the manual!). The headphones sound very decent but fit on my head a little weird (they feel loose). The cheapo stand ACTUALLY holds up the H4n... rather well. I thought i would just throw it away but it works. I also like the little "handle" looking thing, which is designed to screw into the H4n and then be put into a mic stand. I originally thought it was some kind of handle to walk around with it, which would be stupid.Haven't used the remote control yet, but this deal is worth the buy in my opinion (your going to spend 300 just on the h4n) might as well get a buncha little extras like the memory card.

Only got it yesterday - early impressions
I just picked this unit up yesterday, so my review is based on my initial findings just playing around. Please note that this review is only of the H4n ext, and not for/of the seller.The product itself is very well designed. It's got a little weight to it (feels solid to me), and I could see it getting a bit tiring holding this out at arms length for extended periods. luckily it's got a standard tripod screw mount (like you'd find on the bottom of a camera/video camera). The unit I bought also contained a small mic stand adapter... a plastic dowel with a tripod screw on the bottom.The surprising thing was that this unit runs on two standard Double-A batteries. At first, I was expecting some kind of rechargable ni-cad pack. Honestly, I like this better anyway. In the end, I'd ALWAYS prefer to have a power source that I can pick up in any convenience store just about anywhere, as opposed to having to rely on finding somewhere to recharge.I only did a...

The sound quality is EXCELLENT with all of the XY and MS Mic settings.The display is good, Navigation is fairly logical, and it has lots of excellent software features for editing/manipulating/converting the audio, right inside the H2n unit (without external computer).It is very fast/easy to turn on and start a new recording. You will never miss that special musical performance, baby's first words, bird call, etc.Time/date stamping makes it easy to match up sound recordings with photos/movies, taken at the same day/time.The H2n would be worth the price if you only used it as a high quality electret condenser studio mic/USB to computer interface, for recording with Logic Audio or Garage Band. First impressions
I've had a Zoom H2 for about 4 years and found that it has done all that we needed. It is used for my wife's vocal and instrumental practices and for recording some performances. It has also been used to record music for a "limited distribution" CD. Good quality and fairly easy to use.After hundreds of hours of use and abuse, and some recent minor problems, I decided to try the new H2n. It is much easier to use, and the first recordings are fine.Will follow up after more use.
