This Will Be a Classic
After all these years of presenting us with fabulous children's books, Eric Carle has outdone himself. "Slowly, Slowly," a beautifully written and illustrated tribute to the world's rain forests, will bring a tear to an adult's eye, and will appeal to children of ALL ages, despite its picture-book presentation.Beginning with the thoughtful, simply written but heartfelt introduction by Jane Goodall, in which she explains the world of the sloth in terms anyone can understand, to the lovely wording of the book (the sloth does everything slowly, slowly...languid and lovely) to the trademark Carle collage illustrations, this book has something for everyone. And it educates in such a subtle way that even the most recalcitrant child will come away with a strong sense of who lives in the rain forests and why they must be preserved.Every page features not only the sloth, but another animal as well, illustrated in the most enchanting of collage pictures. At the end of the book, each of...

Set Your Own Pace.....
Slowly, slowly, slowly...that's the way of the sloth. Whether crawling along a branch, or eating a leaf, the sloth never hurries, but spends most of his life hanging upside down from a tree branch in the rain forest, and sleeping, rain or shine. "Why are you so slow?" the howler monkey asked one day." And why so quiet and boring, other animals want to know. The sloth didn't answer. He just hung, silently, and slept. But when the jaguar asks why he's so lazy, the sloth finally sees the need to set the record straight. He may be many things, among them lackadaisical, unflappable, sluggish, calm, and laid-back. "I am relaxed and tranquil, and I like to live in peace. But I am not lazy." Then the sloth yawned and said, "That's just how I am. I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly." Beginning with an intriguing forward by Jane Goodall, detailing the life and habits of the sloth, Eric Carle's wonderfully creative picture book pays homage to...

A Treasure
Slowly, Slowly, Slowly, Said the Sloth, written by Eric Carle, is a delightful children's picture book about the joys of learning to march to one's own drum. A sloth lives alone in the rain forest. The sloth does nothing but hang from the branches of his tree and sleep all day. During the course of the story various animals ask the sloth questions about his habits. "Why are you so slow?" "Why are you so lazy?" The sloth finally responds one day with the following rather simple but effective defense of his life style, "That's just how I am. I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly." The illustrations are bright and colorful. Eric Carle's collage style is perfectly suited for creating the sloth's rain forest home and the many other animal denizens who populate its landscape. Slowly, Slowly, Slowly, Said the Sloth is an excellent book with a gentle and heart felt message for children.Preston McClear,

The three-toed sloth of the Amazon rain forest is very, very slow. "Why are you so slow?" the howler monkey asks. But the sloth doesn't answer. He doesn't respond when the caiman asks why he's so quiet, either--or when the anteater asks why he's so boring. He is only moved to speak when the jaguar asks him why he's so lazy. After thinking long and hard (as sloths tend to do), he begins to elaborate on his many slothful qualities: unflappable, lethargic, but not lazy. "That's just how I am. I like to do things slowly, slowly, slowly." This simple introduction to the joys of sloth (and sloths) may be the perfect book for bedtime--parents and children alike will enjoy learning in zoologist Jane Goodall's foreword that sloths sleep 15 to 19 hours a day! The beautiful tapirs, tree frogs, and birds of the Amazon that adorn Eric Carle's cut-paper collage, color-drenched pages are identified at the close of this lush, oversized picture book. A great new addition to the Seven Sins series
A thought provoking and extremely clever work looking at the topic of apathy from a variety of angles. Anand used a range of styles, from an in your face stream of consciousness piece to a short essay reminding us to think twice where we spend our dollars. In some ways this was a "mini 2032" set in contemporary times. I highly recommend this to other readers.

A non-stop action adventure with an unlikely hero
It's not often that I write a review. But this book exceeded my expectations. I really didn't know what to expect. What I got was a non-stop action adventure set in the jungle of Peru. Filled with fun animal characters, like Ernesto the golden lion tamarin and his best friend, Sergio - the unlikely hero of the story - a three-toed sloth, this story kept me on the edge of my seat.Sergio and Ernesto have to leave the safety of their canopy-covered village where all their friends live to search for Princess Rosalyn who was captured by the evil jaguar, Tor. Along their way, Sergio discovers the old ways of sloths and becomes a "shadow warrior".The South American jungle/rainforest setting and the vast array of characters in this story will draw you into their world. The action will keep you there. The whole time I read this book, it felt like I was watching an animated movie. Hopefully it will be someday.I highly recommend this book. Whether you're young...

Darkly hilarious
Sam Savage's new book is a masterpiece in its observation of one man's descent from being a mere misanthrope to being a lunatic misanthrope. Although the book is dark it is also very funny, and I found the main character nowhere near as objectionable as he was perhaps intended to be. In his pathetic attempts to be liked and respected, the 'hero' of the book is at times even sympathetic. Written in the form of short pieces, letters, shopping lists and notes, The Cry of the Sloth is a fantastically entertaining journey into one man's tortured soul.

Often sad, yet humorous. This is one to pass on to friends
Sam Savage gained fame for Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife, which was an endearingly sad tale about a rat born in a bookstore that is intelligent beyond his meager stature. Savage again takes up the reins of blending a love for the written word with a sad and lamentable character, but in the case of The Cry of the Sloth he has also created an ill-mannered logophile. Told through four months worth of letters written by the main character Andrew Whittaker, a small-time literary magazine Publisher and landlord of dilapidated apartments is a supreme ne'er-do-well. If Whittaker gets involved in anything it is sure to crumble to pieces.Whittaker is on a downward spiral into loneliness and madness as he laments where his life is while being chased by his tenants who are tired of apartments infested with rats and roofs caving in. It takes a few chapters/letters to get into the style of The Cry of the Sloth, as the tone and often the truthfulness of the letters is...

Product Description

Living on a diet of fried Spam, vodka, sardines, cupcakes, and Southern Comfort, Andrew Whittaker is slowly being sucked into the morass of middle age. A negligent landlord, small-time literary journal editor, and aspiring novelist, he is—quite literally— authoring his own downfall. From his letters, diary entries, and fragments of fiction, to grocery lists and posted signs, this novel is a collection of everything Whittaker commits to paper over the course of four critical months.

Beginning in July, during the economic hardships of the Nixon era, we witness our hero hounded by tenants and creditors, harassed by a loathsome local arts group, and tormented by his ex-wife. Determined to redeem his failures and eviscerate his enemies, Whittaker hatches a grand plan. But as winter nears, his difficulties accumulate, and the disorder of his life threatens to overwhelm him. As his hold on reality weakens and his schemes grow wilder, his self-image as a placid and slow-moving sloth evolves into that of a bizarre and frantic creature driven mad by solitude.

In this tragicomic portrait of a literary life, Sam Savage proves that all the evidence is in the writing, that all the world is, indeed, a stage, and that escape from the mind’s prison requires a command performance.

Sammy Boy
So the main character dude is a landlord for some rather choice rentals. In one instance he writes a letter to a tenant that basically says your wife is so large that when she soaks in the tub, the overflow of water finds its way into the floorboards and rots the ceiling underneath causing it to cave in. (How can you not love that??)I loved Firmin...I loved this. Basically a slew of letters to a selected bunch that showcase what remains of his life. Too bad the author, Sam Savage is already seventy. Hopefully he's got a few more books in him.
