So Clever! Straight from the Horse's Mouth!
I really liked this story. I liked that it was told through the horse's viewpoint! I liked that it had a happy ending! There's so much talk nowadays about what happens to Thoroughbreds when they are done racing. This is a great success story! And yes, it'll make you cry happy tears!

Love this cover!
This story made me cry, but happy tears, Touching story, the horse almost becomes human. I've just read three of this author's stories, reviewed them all and I am emotionally exhausted, but pleasantly so. Great stories.

My favorite Bev Pettersen book so far!
I have read all but one of Ms. Pettersen's books and loved them. However, this one is my favorite so far. Jenna is adorable and a breath of fresh air. I loved her down-to-earthiness. Her love interest, Burke, is a mixture of uptight, kind, steely, sexy, hunky, and also adorable in an alpha-male sort of way that makes one's heart pound. The ending of the book had me breathless and, dang, the battery on my Kindle ran out and I had to recharge it. Anyway, I finished the book with my heart in my throat. Kudos to Ms. Pettersen!

Another Winner
This is romance at it's best. The setting is an equine care facility which in itself was interesting and educational for me.Jenna is an engaging heroine who has overcome her less than stellar upbringing and has found the perfect job as a horse masseuse. She is able to enjoy being with the animals she loves and help her younger sister attain the tools to allow her to move ahead in the world.Jenna has learned her craft by observation and intuition rather than through more traditional means. She personifies resourcefulness however and has acquired the necessary "proof" required to work as a professional. All is fine until the hero arrives!Derek Burke has been sent to find ways to streamline the operating costs of the facility and determine which staff and services are expendable.Top criteria-credentials!OhOh!I loved the play between the main characters and all of the employees at the center. This was one of those books that kept you turning the pages wondering how the...

Great Story
Thoroughbreds and Trailer Trash takes place at an equine wellness facility that is in the middle of a hostile takeover. Burke, an executive, shows up to "flip" the center; he wants to cater to wealthy clients, and hopes to impress them with very qualified staff. Jenna, a talented horse masseuse, gets results, but is self-taught; she didn't even graduate from high school. She can't afford to lose the job; she's putting her little sister through college by herself, so as she gets closer to Burke, she's torn between coming clean and looking after what's most important to her, her sister.I absolutely LOVED Jenna. The girl's completely hilarious! She gets herself into some trouble, but everything that she does is to protect her family, friends, and of course, her elderly pony, Peanut. Burke, the poor guy, doesn't know what to make of her most of the time, but he he really is sweet, under all of the scary businessman stuff. It was cute how Jenna was the only person who wasn't...

Most informative and interesting
I'm a casual fan of horse racing and this book was a great read. Very informative and enlightening -- just perfect for someone like me. Note: The back of the book contains a lot of interesting information worth checking out before you start reading. The colts and fillies in the book are now three years old. I'm looking forward to following their careers.

Product Description

Author Susan Nusser takes readers inside the excitement and suspense at one of Kentucky’s biggest breeding farms. Every year, two hundred broodmares in the farm’s barns give birth to the next generation of racehorses.  In the eighteen months following their births, those foals will meet the world’s most skilled and knowledgeable horsemen — from grooms to veterinary orthopedists — who will shape them in to the kinds of yearlings that attract the attention of the sheikhs, moguls, and magnates who prowl the yearling sales, hunting for their next Derby winner.

From the carefully calculated birth of the new crop of foals to the horses' debut at the world’s premier yearling sale in Lexington, Kentucky, this is a rare behind-the-scenes look at the vets, the surgeries, the long hours, and the hard work that it takes to breed a Derby hopeful. Kentucky Derby Dreams follows the lives of foals born during the 2009 foaling season and uncovers the inside drama and heartache that accompany these potential champions from the foaling barn to the sales ring.  Compelling, fascinating, and fast-paced, this is a must read for anyone who’s ever watched the Kentucky Derby.

Absolutely wonderful book for the OTTB owner, rider, trainer, fan
Anyone who owns, rides, trains, vets, plans to own, or shoes an off-track thoroughbred (OTTB) simply must read and own this book. It is potentially the best thing that has ever happened to the retired race horse in the U.S. and Canada. Here we get all the information that we so much need: What's different about the OTTB's training needs? What has the horse experienced in the past, from weaning to racing? How do this horse's metabolism, temperament, physiology, emotional psychology, and work ethic differ from those of the non-race breeds? How can we help an OTTB transition into new careers? What feed and turnout routine is optimal, and what are the tolerances for variation? Which types of conformation in OTTB's lend themselves to which riding disciplines?I so wish I'd had access to this book when I purchased my OTTB 8 years ago. It would have saved us both many hours of mutual confusion and fright. Every single sentence of this book rings true to my own...

Wonderful interviews with top US riders and beautiful photos. A must read for anyone with a retired thoroughbred or looking to buy one.

Thoroughbred: A Horse Called Wonder #1 By Joanna Campbell
I first read this book when I was only a twelve year horse-crazy girl. I am now in eleventh grade and still readin every Thoroughbred book that comes out. A Horse called Wonder deals with the pain of an eleven year old girl's loss of her beloved breeding farm her parents' lost due to a virus that wiped them out. Upon her parent's losing the farm, they get new jobs as breeding managers at one of the most prestigous farms in Kentucky, Townsend Acres. Now, all of a sudden Ashleigh is back around horses, but, they're not horses she owns and she vows never to get close to a horse again. But then, she meets Wonder's mother, an older horse who is on her last pregnancy. Wonder's mother reminds Ashleigh of her horse at her old farm that was also sold with the farm, and, much to her disliking she forms a bond with this new horse. When it is time for the horse to deliver, the foal, a girl is born tiny and has many difficulties. The vet recommands putting the filly down, but Ashleigh won't allow...

Beautiful beginning to the story of Ashleigh and Wonder
A Horse Called Wonder is the first book in the Thoroughbred series, created by Joanna Campbell wrote herself. As of spring 2003, the series has grown to 57 titles, 4 super editions, three reissues, and a spin-off Ashleigh series, which makes the original 14 books and 2 super editions even more precious. Most loyal readers agree that Joanna Campbell, as the original author and creater, was the best. She created real situations with flawed but likable characters. From the very beginning Ashleigh is both stubborn and determined, but also painfully loving. It isn't much of a surprise that she's afraid to love any horse ever again - she's 12 when this series begins, which means that she's had to face a lot of death very early in life. Later books tend to forget what a strong bond Ashleigh and Wonder had - simply because of Ashleigh's initial resistance to getting close to a horse.Ashleigh also makes us laugh - her complete disinterest in her appearance, which becomes a stronger...

small coverage on progeny.
Fantastic work and research on the concerned sire from his foaling, racing till his stud career. Very interesting reading but what I would have liked to know what special traits of his character, confirmation and racing abilities which have been passed down to his progeny; so when I look now at his great grandsons/daughters I can indentify if any of his traits are still are being carried down through his bloodlines. This is completely missing and even his progeny's career achivements have hardly been mentioned. The title is misleading!
