One of the best books I have ever read!
I am a reader; I devour books. A Town Like Alice is one of my very favorites. I come back to it time and again, whenever I need to lose myself in the heat of Malaysia or the dust of Australia. This book is so well written that I can feel the stones in the road as Jean marches along with the other women in their "Death March". I can feel the despair she feels when she believes Joe to be dead and her intense joy when she discovers that he is still alive. The story is timeless. My mother-in-law,who was a bride during World War II, first introduced me to this book saying that it was her all time favorite, and even though I came of age in the 70's, the book speaks to me as well. Its message of love's survival in the face of desperate odds gives us all a sense of hope.

One of my favorite stories of all time.
This classic of literature takes place on three continents. It involves history, geography, travel, adventure, misery, joy, evil, and love. He creates marvelous three-dimensional characters. Even the countryside is like another character, because it's so full and important to the story. I first discovered this story on PBS's "Masterpiece Theater" and that production was true to the book. The video (of that production) and the audiotape are also excellent. I had tears in my eyes when it came to an end, wanting it to go on and on. A completely satisfying book.

Product Description

Nevil Shute’s most beloved novel, a tale of love and war, follows its enterprising heroine from the Malayan jungle during World War II to the rugged Australian outback.

Jean Paget, a young Englishwoman living in Malaya, is captured by the invading Japanese and forced on a brutal seven-month death march with dozens of other women and children. A few years after the war, Jean is back in England, the nightmare behind her. However, an unexpected inheritance inspires her to return to Malaya to give something back to the villagers who saved her life. But it turns out that they have a gift for her as well: the news that the young Australian soldier, Joe Harmon, who had risked his life to help the women, had miraculously survived. Jean’s search for Joe leads her to a desolate Australian outpost called Willstown, where she finds a challenge that will draw on all the resourcefulness and spirit that carried her through her war-time ordeals. Wonderful book which works on many levels
Too few of Nevil Shute's books are in print in this country--fortunately, this is one of the better one. When an old Scottish man dies, London solicitor Noel Strachan learns that his sole heir is a young woman named Jean Paget. Strachan acts as her trustee, dispensing money as needed under the will, but the old lawyer soon finds himself falling for the young lady. Before Strachan has done more than shown her London's culture, Paget is off to Malaya to repay the village where she stayed during WWII by digging a well. She convinces Strachan to release the money by telling the story (based on real life) of how she and other women were held prisoner by the Japanese, but eventually found refuge in a small village. Before they go there, they encounter a young Australian, Joe Harmon, who is crucified for stealing food for them. When Paget returns to Malaya, she learns that Harmon survived and returned to Australia. Meanwhile, Harmon has gone to England to seek her, having thought...

A cliff hanger at the end of each!
Love this show! Each one leaves you wanting more and more. Love the characters, both the good and the evil. If you like the vampire stuff you will love this series. The only thing I wish that would change would be that more episodes would be put out and quicker! lol

fresh and new
I am a vampire movie/television show buff, and I'm happy to find that this latest teen drama has a fresh twist on the old tale. Clearly, there is some Whedon influence to Vampire Diaries, but it is new and clean not the same old teenage angst--lonely misery-filled vampire show. I recommend it for those looking for a bit of a twist on the old.

Just when you think it's getting predictable . . .
You think it's falling into teen-vampire soap predictability, and then the writers pull out great lines like "No dead hybrids at the Founders Party!" and "You're ruining a perfectly good funeral," and then--the plot goes absolutely bonkers, taking 3 or 4 totally unpredictable twists in the last 10 minutes (I won't spoil them). AND we get an unexpectedly moving speech by Klaus about the "true beauty" that exists in the world, and how living forever allows one to access all of it--to CAROLINE of all people! And then--an entirely new, non-monster storyline thrown in at the very end. And, as always, things get gory in wonderfully unpredictable and shocking ways.I don't know how they do it, but the writers/creators keep the surprises coming at an astonishing rate, while still keeping the characters, relationships, stories, dialogue and themes coherent and (relatively) seamless. Someday non-teens like me will see what's so extraordinary about this series . . . but until...

"Believable Fiction"
Mike's greatest talent is his ability to write fiction that doesn't feel like fiction. His new book "Temptation Town" brings the Jack Barnett character to life and makes him seem like he's a guy you actually know.! To me, getting inside the players' heads and their internal dialogues makes reading Mike Dennis intriguing. The current story is a must read for anyone who likes their fiction told in a style which is believable.!Robyn Salisbury Las Vegas, Nevada

Gritty & Clever - Like turning over a rock
The Barnett series is an idea whose time has come and an obvious move for this very noir author. Barnett is hair-trigger, battered hero who watches a nightmare unfold and must drum up some faith that something good can come of an investigation into a missing girl from the seamy streets and back alleys of Las Vegas, AKA Temptation Town.Barnett could be describing himself when he speaks of Emily, the missing girl he's been hired to find, "before they drown, they've got to dig down within themselves and find something they think is worth saving. And they've got to do it all alone." Hang on to this roller coaster because when the screaming stops, it's like turning over a rock. Signature Dennis twists and turns, that keep you guessing, and a multi-layered ending that leaves you waiting for the next Barnett caper. Gritty and clever, a nimble departure from his longer works.

Raw Vegas
Mike Dennis, author of the Key West Nocturne series of crime novels, has here penned a tight, cautionary tale of corruption and greed set amid the flash & filigree of the Vegas strip and the city's darker byways where drugs, violence and hopelessness abide. The tale is told by Dennis' newest character, Jack Barnett, an ex-gumshoe haunted by his past, who can't leave well enough along. The ghost of Mike Hammer moves through these pages, as Dennis nicely executes several unexpected twists and turns and ends on a plaintive jazz horn lament.

Much improved picture and extras for new edition of classic film
A remarkable film noir classic, "Chinatown" finally gets the deluxe treatment it deserves on DVD. While the previous edition looked quite good (and had some nice interviews), this edition features a sharper, more vivid transfer. Additionally, we get a three part documentary on the making of the movie focusing on the preproduction, filming and impact of the film with Jack Nicholson, Roman Polanski, Robert Evans and writer Robert Towne participating. Sadly, Faye Dunaway doesn't appear in any of the extras. I had hoped for a commentary track (even one cobbled together of various interviews from the entire surviving cast and production crew)and the discovery of any deleted scenes for this edition but neither is included. The latest edition of "Chinatown" has much better contrast, a cleaner, richer looking transfer that more accurately captures a pristine theatrical presentation of the film. The anamorphic transfer has a bit more information on the sides than in the previous...

A milestone in film noir history.
"Water is the life blood of every community." With this statement, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's website begins its biography of William Mulholland, the real life model of two of this movie's characters, water department chief Hollis Mulwray (an obvious play on words) and water tycoon Noah Cross. And indeed water, the access to it and the wealth it provides, is what drives everything and everybody in this movie set in the ever-thirsty Los Angeles of the first decades of this century, a budding boom town on the brink of victory or decay ... and whether it will be one or th other depends on the city's ongoing access to drinking water. "Chinatown"'s story is based on William Mulholland's greatest coup; the construction of the Owen Valley aqueduct which provided Los Angeles with a steady source of drinking water but also entailed a lot of controversy. Splitting Mulholland's complex real-life persona into two fictional characters (the noble Mulwray who...

You Can't Ever Forget "Chinatown"
About an hour into "Chinatown", Noah Cross (John Huston) says to Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), "You may think you know what you're dealing with, but believe me, you don't." Gittes, whose heard this rap before, just smiles. "Why is that funny?" asks Cross. "It's what the D.A. used to tell me about Chinatown." If any exchange defines "Chinatown" the movie then this is it. It's a film where the cliched metaphor of the onion is quite apt: the more layers you peel away, the more layers you find. And the less you're likely to understand. It begins life as a simple detective story, but eventually spins out of control into a web of intrigue (another cliched metaphor) that not only includes the murder of water commissioner Hollis Mulwray, but the entirety of 1930's Los Angeles.Into this web is sprung Jake Gittes, a man who seems to be a typical film noir detective, but upon closer inspection is much more. Or, as we shall see, much less. I'd argue that Jake is an existential...
