A Classic Coming-of-Age Book That Touches Your Heart
Francie Nolan is a character who will long be remembered by anyone who reads "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." Bright but lonely, poor but resourceful, Francie Nolan is captured from ages 11 to 16 with poignancy and love. Francie is her daddy's "prima donna" and she treasures his love while fighting to win her mother's. Although she never achieves the place in her mother's heart that her brother holds, her strength and sheer perserverance guide her through difficult times. Like the sturdy tree that grows outside her window and survives all catastrophes, Francie Nolan survives poverty, lack of formal education, sexual assault, extreme loneliness, and lost love. The reader first meets Francie at age 11 when, as an inquisitive young girl, her favorite time of the day is on Saturday when she can go to the library then rush home with her treasure and read the afternoon away on the fire escape of her Brooklyn tenement. As a young girl, she feels "rich" when she...

A Wowing Historical Fiction Classic
I am in total awe after reading this book. In the beginning I thought it was going to be a boring and long novel. But throughout my reading I became to grow more attached to the story. The main character Francie was an intriguing and delightful creation that anyone would want as their best friend, should she not be a fictional person. I enjoyed reading how the poor family made ends meet and continued surviving when it seemed they couldn't hang on much longer. It seems that you shouldn't find it entertaining to read of suffering, but the author writes it in such a ingenious way as to that you're really reading about the magnificence of life, living, and death. As the family encounters dilemma after dilemma you find yourself encased in the wonder of how they do it. Throughout all the sadness and suffering the Nolans are still kind and considerate, loving and caring, fair and just; overall good people! Don't get me wrong, this is not a sad story, although some parts are on the sadder...

A rare treasure of a story!
In the first page of this book, Betty Smith writes very gently and calmly of Francie Nolan, a pre-teenager just beginning to step out on the edge of adulthood. And Smith ties the book up neatly at the end as if she's giving a present to the reader ... which she is. This is one of the sweetest, most eloquently written books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Francie Nolan lives in Brooklyn with her brother Neely, mom Katie and dad Johnny. It is in the early 1900s where the book is set. The family is poor ~~ living almost on the edge of starvation. Francie has taken to reading like a duck takes to water ... once she discovered the joy of reading, she becomes a big bookworm. She is also a keen observer of life around her ~~ her thoughts are often witty and funny as she observes the strange behavior of her mother's sisters and their lives, the neighbors, her brother Neely, her mother and father's relationships with one another. Till Francie grows up to be this amazing woman set...

Product Description

The beloved American classic about a young girl's coming-of-age at the turn of the century, Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a poignant and moving tale filled with compassion and cruelty, laughter and heartache, crowded with life and people and incident. The story of young, sensitive, and idealistic Francie Nolan and her bittersweet formative years in the slums of Williamsburg has enchanted and inspired millions of readers for more than sixty years. By turns overwhelming, sublime, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the daily experiences of the unforgettable Nolans are raw with honesty and tenderly threaded with family connectedness -- in a work of literary art that brilliantly captures a unique time and place as well as incredibly rich moments of universal experience.

Francie Nolan, avid reader, penny-candy connoisseur, and adroit observer of human nature, has much to ponder in colorful, turn-of-the-century Brooklyn. She grows up with a sweet, tragic father, a severely realistic mother, and an aunt who gives her love too freely--to men, and to a brother who will always be the favored child. Francie learns early the meaning of hunger and the value of a penny. She is her father's child--romantic and hungry for beauty. But she is her mother's child, too--deeply practical and in constant need of truth. Like the Tree of Heaven that grows out of cement or through cellar gratings, resourceful Francie struggles against all odds to survive and thrive. Betty Smith's poignant, honest novel created a big stir when it was first published over 50 years ago. Her frank writing about life's squalor was alarming to some of the more genteel society, but the book's humor and pathos ensured its place in the realm of classics--and in the hearts of readers, young and old. A quiet grace, a simple prayer

Product Description

Willow Tree A Tree, A Prayer Angel Figurine by Susan Lordi. 5.5" high. Resin and metal. Gift boxed. Standing angel figure in a gown with a tree pattern with hands held in prayer. "May you find strength, beauty and peace each day" Since 2000, Susan Lordi has been creating these figurative sculptures that speak in quiet ways of deep emotion and inspiration. Artist Susan Lordi carves each original sculpture, then pieces are cast from her original carving in resin and individually painted by hand. Expression is conveyed by gestures only - a tilt of the head, a turn of the body, or placement of the hands. The simplicity of form and the absence of facial features signify Willow Tree. Emotions are left to the viewer to interpret, which makes them powerful and personal. It is Susan Lordi's hope that these pieces be meaningful to both the giver and the receiver. Top to learn more

Customer Review

Great show!
I loved this entire show. Amazon thank you for having it available for cheap. The quality was great. To the reviewer before mine, Amazon did not cut any time out of the show. It is a 2 hour finale on TV(keep in mind this includes commercials). When you remove the commercials, you are left with the 1 hr 22 min show. Also, it says that the finale includes the opening commentary. So you have a final show and commentary. You might want to edit your review and up the stars :)

Where's the two hours?
I love that I can always come to Amazon and buy episodes of my favorite shows that I've missed. However, I am sorely disappointed that Amazon describes this as a 2-hour finale and then only gives me 52 minutes. What gives??

Product Description

The Pferd double-cut carbide bur has a tree shape with a radius end and an uncoated (bright) finish, and is for use on cast iron, steel with a Rockwell Hardness of less than C60, stainless steel, titanium alloys, and nickel-based alloys. The standard double-cut type produces smaller chips and offers better operator control than a single-cut bur when used on recommended material. The bur has a tree shape with a radius end, also known as shape F, which is suitable for machining narrow, hard-to-reach contoured surfaces with a round corner. Carbide provides good wear resistance and maintains sharp edges longer than high-speed steel (HSS). With no coating or surface treatment, uncoated carbide supports a range of general-purpose applications. In most applications, burs should be operated within the recommended cutting speed range, expressed in surface feet per minute (SFPM).

Cutting burs, also called rotary files, are small rotary tools with many cutting edges that operate at very high speeds in order to remove material from a workpiece. The bur’s head contains the cutting edges, and the bur’s shank is inserted like a drill bit into a toolholder such as a drill chuck or collet. Burs are versatile tools that are offered in many shapes, sizes, and end types, and they are used in a wide range of industries, including tool, die, and mold manufacturing; metal fabrication; and dentistry. Burs can be used for deburring, or removing small protrusions (burrs) that form on the surface of a workpiece as a result of a machining process. They can also be used for welding preparation, finishing welded joints, chamfering, surface cleaning and finishing, grinding down rough edges, and contouring. A bur’s compact size gives the operator control over contact between the bur and the workpiece, making the tool well suited for delicate operations. Finishes or coatings may be applied to the head of the tool to improve wear resistance, decrease friction, and protect against high temperatures.

Pferd, Inc., manufactures abrasives and cutting tools for grinding, finishing, and cutting. Founded in 1799, Pferd has its U.S. headquarters in Leominster, MA. Pferd meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 standards.
