It's Not Always How We Dress
We've encountered Don Winn's Chipper the Clown in his first adventure in "Chipper the Clown: A kid's book about a circus clown who learns that it's important to ask for help in order to follow your dreams." In this story, Chipper finds that he gets no laughs when he performs a show in a pinstripe suit. He has to ask for help to answer his dilemma, and he finds he needs to dress like a clown. Now, in "Chipper and the Unicycle," this well-meaning clown finds that he is boring his audience, even putting them to sleep sometimes. What is he to do?While on a trip to Europe to get some fresh, new ideas for tricks, Chipper sees a picture of a unicycle. Here is his answer! And "To learn this new trick/Should be easy and quick," he thinks. Not so. Chipper falls off the bike, runs into trees, and even blows a tire. He gives up and tries to return the bike. But he must learn perseverance, a term Winn has introduced in the beginning of the book. The idea of...

Excellent, informative, inspiring book!
This book is excellent in several ways. It will get you excited about unicyling and the benefits it can provide: physical fitness, family fun, entertainment, and sport! It's a "how-to" book with great unicycling tips, and it's a great success story. But more than that, the author talks about matters of the heart and the foundation of his success: faith, family, health, and vocation (in that order). He puts a little humor in the mix, and produces an informative, inspiring, and fun book (with pictures!) that only takes a couple of hours for the average reader to enjoy.John Drummond tells the true story about his humble beginnings as a child who discovers a love for unicycle riding, and his rise to entrepreneurism as he follows his lifelong dream of one day owning his own company. That company: [...], a worldwide presence in the unicycling market today.Read this book to further your love for unicycling, or to get inspired to follow your dream, whatever it may be!

Product Description

Reinventing The Wheel presents the story of the struggles and success of Unicycle.com-a company launched during the dot-com bust of 1999 that has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. Written by the founder of Unicycle.com, Reinventing The Wheel features: * inspiration and valuable insights for anyone starting a business * practical advice-what to do and what not to do-for all entrepreneurs * photos, facts, and anecdotes from the one-wheeled world With a foreword by unicycling great John Foss, Reinventing the Wheel also features special sections by author and unicyclist Carol Etter McLean, director of Unicycle Central of Minnesota, with Frequently Asked Questions on starting a unicycle club, tips for learning to ride, and the IRUS skill-building program developed by the Unicycling Society of America. Or, a nuts-and-bolts business primer?
I can't disagree with my fellow reviewer; Reinventing the Wheel is all of that. Not what I wanted or got out of it, but I can see that content in the book. I heard John Drummond in an interview and bought the book to learn more. What I found is a nuts-and-bolts business history of a business born on the internet, marketed and grown in a way that is almost unimaginable without the internet. For the record, the Hammonds run product-based businesses, with warehouses and inventory and shipping and suppliers and all those pesky details that sometimes get glossed over in the instant wealth internet marketing schemes. He even states that his best advertising (for banjos) is billboards. How old-fashioned! How interesting! (Not a month later, I heard a different internet wise man advise negotiating over magazine & journal rate cards, which is much the same as negotiating over billboard rates. Useful.)Not likely that I'm going to get on a unicycle any time soon,...

Customer Review

Good little unicycle, great price!
Bought this unicycle for my 11 y.o. son. Had some trepidation in picking 20" vs 24" wheel. Glad we picked this size. He's tall but friends all recommended starting off on a 20". I now agree. We adjusted the seat as low as possible without the bar touching the wheel. Assembly was fairly easy, but no instructions were included. Be sure to note the left (L) and right (R) pedals and install them on correct sides. Otherwise they will twist off when riding. They screw onto crank arms. If you're short, you may need to hacksaw off some of the pipe the seat attaches to. We just managed with the shortest setting. Friends with unicycles suggested duct taping the seat for protection as the cycle falls a lot when a beginner is starting off. Seems a good quality cycle and a great beginner one. Would recommend to others. It took about 10 days for my son to learn. Helpful videos on learning to ride unicycle on uTube.

This Beginner Is Completely Satisfied
I'm extremely pleased with this purchase. The primary reason I decided to learn to ride a unicycle is to help combat one of the preventable effects of aging, now that I'm in my early fifties. I've noticed that some older people seem to start losing their sense of balance, and I can't think of any better exercise to prevent or even reverse that loss than unicycle riding.-The product assembled quite easily due to the simplicity of a unicycle, and all necessary parts were included and correct. Unfortunately, the amount of torque needed to tighten the seat clamp in order to keep the seat from twisting off-center would seem to hinder quick readjustment to accommodate different-height riders, but for me that is just a good excuse not to have to share my unicycle ;-)-I've been learning to ride in my apartment on light tan carpet, and there are no signs of any black marks from the tires, although once I take it on the street it will have to be an "outdoor only"...

Had it a week
Actually, it might deserve a 5 star rating. I'm still afraid to just hold on to the counter top, not holding on to a chair w/ other hand. Watch the videos at YouTube. I think they're good.----------------------------When it came (quite quickly), I sprayed the whole thing w/ a silicone lubricant. (It dried, and I think it'll act like a wax job). I assembled it easily. In the past, I played w/ a lot of bikes, so it was all very obvious, as to assembling the thing. We all have different backgrounds, so maybe it would confuse some people. There are no instructions. Understand that the left hand pedal must go on the left side. This is so that when you pedal, it will tend to tighten that pedal( a bit). If they didn't make the pedals that way, you might ride the bike and literally unscrew the pedal. That wouldn't be good. All bikes are made that way. For the left pedal, righty-tighty/lefty loosy is reversed. Look at the pedals. Somewhere, one pedal has an "R" on it, the other, an...

Not just for cyclists
I wanted to take the trip again as soon as I put "One Wheel, Many Spokes" down.? Like other books on distance cycling ("Pedaling the Ends of the Earth", "Miles From Nowhere" and, of course, "It's Not About the Bike"), One Wheel is less about the bike and more about life and living.?? Lars is a remarkable person and his straightforward storytelling managed to capture me completely.? I had tears in my eyes for much of the book and was touched by what he saw and reflected on throughout his journey.? His connection with "the human experience" and that connection with the land resonated powerfully with me and I am lucky to have participated with him and his wonderful (extended) family in his journey.

Hallelujah
What a great story. Very well-written and easy to read, with plenty of description, Lars Clausen weaves the story of his unicycle trip across the country, his family support, his personal theology and his passion for life. As a person who lives in Nome, Alaska... I found this book to be an excellent description of not only life here on the Seward Peninsula, but also of many other places around the country. Clausen writes about his ups and downs and not just on the trail. You will find yourself rooting for him and his family as they patch together their RV and follow a path through all 50 states. Quotes from Mark Twain, histories of Native American people, lots of food descriptions and true determination make this a wonderful read for anytime and anywhere.

I am at the Statue of Liberty with the One Wheel Crew! I literally cried when I read this part of the book. I could feel what it was like to accomplish this ride, and I could feel what it was like to be on the support crew too!! I am not traveling from Alaska this summer, so this has been a wonderful experience from my armchair or sittng on my deck. Beautiful writing and deep meaning are all part of this book. Congrats to those who made it possible! I am headed to the Pacific now, as Lars rides back!

amusing read
I purchased this book as a gift for my husband who is learning to ride a unicycle and thought I'd leave some comments based on his feedback.I heard him chuckle a few times and say he found it amusing. In the end, the tie-in with the title happens when the author talks about her own experiences in trying to learn to ride a unicycle. I hope that doesn't spoil it for anyone, but it seems pretty obvious that a story about a unicycle is coming based on the title. If you know anyone who is learning to ride a unicycle and likes to read, it's a pretty quick and light hearted read.
